Heat Pipe Enhanced Thermal Management System for GaN Switches in an Integrated Modular Motor Drive for Aircraft Propulsion

This paper presents the process of sizing a heat pipe enhanced thermal management system (TMS) for GaN switches in an integrated modular motor drive (IMMD) powering a 250 kW aircraft propulsion electric motor. A test setup mimicking the TMS and GaN switches assembly is constructed. The condenser chamber of the TMS is modeled in ANSYS Fluent while the GaN switches assembly is modeled in ANSYS Thermal allowing us to verify heat spreader temperature under test conditions and estimate GaN temperatures under test and actual application operating conditions.

Ultra-Fast Resonant DC Breaker

This project’s focus was to create an ultra-fast resonant hybrid dc circuit breaker for medium voltage electric systems. Medium voltage DC systems offer higher efficiency, additional resiliency, more controllability, and greater flexibility over comparable AC systems. Although technically, medium voltage DC systems are more attractive than their AC counterparts, no solution exists for the protection of medium voltage DC systems, and thus one cannot build a reliable MVDC system. This research will fill the technology gap, providing a MVDC protection solution, allowing mass adoption and proliferation of MVDC systems. MVDC systems will allow greater integration of renewable energy sources, higher efficiency of transmission and distribution, reduced losses in transmission lines, reduce carbon emissions, and higher electric power reliability.

Design of Advanced 1MHz, 1mw Three Phase AC to DC Ultra Fast EV Charger (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

This project embarked to create a compact high-density 1MW EV charger. This project reduced the time to charge an EV with ~400 miles of range to two minutes. This EV charger can be leveraged for residential day-to-day customers and also leveraged for commercial large vehicles such as semi-trucks, delivery trucks, and heavy duty off road. EV chargers of this power capability will reduce consumers range anxiety (The worry of running out of charger in an EV before the customer can get to a charger station.) This will help increase the number of EV’s on the road resulting in decreased use of ICE fossil-based fuel vehicles, reduced emission, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

A New Configuration of Paralleled Modular ANPC Multilevel Converter Controlled by an Improved Modulation Method for 1 MHz, 1 MW EV Charger

In this work, a new configuration of the modular multilevel converter (MLC) based on the parallel connection of three-level active-neutral-point-clamped (3L-ANPC) cells as well as its improved modulation method is proposed for 1 MHz, 1 MW electric vehicle (EV) megacharger. In the proposed paralleled modular ANPC-MLC, only six high-frequency silicon carbide (SiC) power switches operating at 333 kHz are required to generate 1 MHz switching frequency spectrum. Moreover, the operating voltage of all power devices is halved, the magnitude of the first switching frequency harmonic cluster is decreased by the factor of five, and the load current is equally distributed between the 3L-ANPC legs by employing the proposed improved modulation method. Hence, the modularity, efficiency, and power density of the proposed converter are notably increased, whereas the value of passive components and the overall switching loss are remarkably decreased. In addition, an optimized design of the one 3L-ANPC cell of the proposed paralleled modular ANPC-MLC for 1 MHz, 1MW EV megacharger using Ansys SIwave, Icepak, and Q3D finite element method platforms is presented and analyzed in detail. The provided experimental results of the down-scaled setup verify the feasibility and viability of the proposed configuration as well as its improved switching pattern.
