Nuclear three-body short-range correlations in coordinate space

Here, we study the effects of three-nucleon short-range correlations on nuclear coordinate-space densities. For this purpose, novel three-body densities are calculated for ground-state nuclei using the auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo method. The results are analyzed in terms of the generalized contact formalism, extended to include three-body correlations, revealing the universal behavior of nucleon triplets at short distances. We identify the quantum numbers of such correlated triplets and extract scaling factors of triplet abundances that can be compared to upcoming inclusive electron-scattering data. We also show that the dynamics of these triplets is sensitive to three-body forces, and, therefore, the short-range part of three-body force models could be tested against appropriate exclusive electron-scattering data.

Nuclear short-range correlations and the zero-energy eigenstates of the Schrödinger equation

Here, we present a systematic analysis of the nuclear two- and three-body short-range correlations and their relations to the zero-energy eigenstates of the Schrödinger equation. To this end we analyze the doublet and triplet coupled-cluster amplitudes in the high momentum limit, and show that they obey universal equations independent of the number of nucleons and their state. Furthermore, we find that these coupled-cluster amplitudes coincide with the zero-energy Bloch-Horowitz operator. These results illuminate the relations between the nuclear many-body theory and the generalized contact formalism, introduced to describe the nuclear two-body short range correlations, and they might also be helpful for general coupled-cluster computations as the asymptotic part of the amplitudes is given and shown to be universal.

Neutrinoless double-β decay: Combining quantum Monte Carlo and the nuclear shell model with the generalized contact formalism

Neutrinoless double beta decay searches can determine the Majorana nature of neutrinos, the absolute neutrino mass, and provide invaluable insights on the matter dominance of the universe. However, the uncertainty in the nuclear matrix elements that govern the decay limits the physics reach of these experiments. Here, we devise a novel framework based on the generalized contact formalism that combines the nuclear shell model and quantum Monte Carlo methods and compute the neutrinoless double-beta decay of nuclei used in the most advanced experiments, including 76 Ge, 130 Te, and 136 Xe. Our results cover all relevant terms, including the leading-order short-range operator recognized recently. We validate our method in light nuclei by comparing against accurate variational Monte Carlo results. On heavy systems we obtain reduced nuclear matrix elements compared with previous calculations due to additional correlations captured by quantum Monte Carlo and introduced within the generalized contact formalism, suggesting longer decay half-lives than previously considered. On the other hand, we find an enhancement of the nuclear matrix elements due to the new short-range operator.

Isospin-symmetry implications for nuclear two-body distributions and short-range correlations

Here, we study the implications of isospin symmetry in nuclear systems on two-body distributions and derive relations between different densities or momentum distributions of a given nucleus or of different nuclei in the same isospin multiplet. A connection between neutrinoless double beta decay transition of mirror nuclei and two-body densities is also obtained. The relations are numerically verified by means of quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We discuss the relevance of these results to the analysis of nuclear short-range correlations and also show that isospin symmetry allows us to extract information about the spectator nucleons when a short-range correlated pair is formed.
