Application of neutron interrogation techniques to corrosion detection

This paper discusses a technique which may be able to detect corrosion by determining the presence of oxygen at the corroded site via a neutron inelastic gamma reaction. Initial experiments have been performed using a Pu-239/Be neutron source and a NaI(T1) gamma-ray detector. From the results it was concluded that a 1 mm thickness of aluminum oxide would not be detected.

Muon capture rates on O-16 leading to bound states of N-16.

A low-energy spectrum of gamma-rays following muon capture in O-16 was obtained with a high-resolution 1 cu cm Ge(Li) detector. The graph of the spectrum shows the separation of contaminant peaks from the 120 keV N-16 line. It is pointed out that there is a large discrepancy between the capture rate obtained in the investigation and results reported by Deutsch et al. (1969).

Neutron emission following muon capture in Ce-142, Ce-140, Ba-138, and Sn-120.

Branching ratios to excited nuclear states formed after muon capture have been measured with Ge(Li) detectors. The delayed gamma rays were observed in studies of muonic Ce-142, Ce-140, Ba-138, and Sn-120, using separated isotopes. The resulting isotopes formed indicate at least a 60% probability of neutron emission upon muon capture, with the most likely product resulting from single-neutron emission. No evidence for delayed proton emission with a probability higher than 2% was found. Using our more precise energies for the observed nuclear transitions, we present revised energy levels schemes for La-141, La-139, Cs-137, and In-119.

Gamma-neutrino angular correlations in muon capture.

Using a high-resolution Ge(Li) spectrometer, it proved possible to observe several Doppler-broadened gamma-ray transitions in Al-28 excited by muon capture in Si-28. Several of these transitions are shown to be suitable for analysis in terms of angular correlations between the neutrino and a deexcitation nuclear gamma-ray. The observed transitions are interpreted in terms of gamma-neutrino correlation coefficients which are functions of the weak-interaction coupling constants.

Yields of gamma rays emitted following capture of negative muons by Si28 and Mg24.

Measurement of the yields of specific final states excited in the capture of negative muons by Mg24 and Si28. The yields are compared with the cross sections for excitation of the analog states by 180 deg electron scattering and with the relative populations of levels produced by the decay of the giant-dipole-resonance states.

Pionic X-ray yields and 2p-level widths in Li6, Be9, C12 and O16.

Measurement of the intensities of 2p-1s pionic X-ray transitions in Li6, Be9, C12 and O16 by using an absolute-efficiency technique. Population probability predictions for the mesonic levels, and values for the strong-interaction levels widths are obtained by pion-cascade calculations. Numerical values are also obtained for the 2p-level absorption broadening.
