Mobile Platform for Large Structures

Proposed platform moves forward and in reverse, turns left and right, and changes planes. Mobile-platform concept proposed to move remote manipulators, workers, or other loads over truss panels on large structures. Platform moves at constant speed so does not cause swinging motion in hanging loads and overstress remote-manipulator arms. Transferred around corners to adjacent panels. Platform rides on sprocketed guide pins extending from structure at truss joints. Set of orthogonal tracks under platform slides on pins, which have enlarged heads to interlock with tracks. At least three tracks engage at least three pins at any position on panel so platform adequately and stably supported.

Shuttle-launch triangular space station

A triangular space station deployable in orbit is described. The framework is comprized of three trusses, formed of a pair of generally planar faces consistine of foldable struts. The struts expand and lock into rigid structural engagement forming a repetition of equilater triangles and nonfolding diagonal struts interconnecting the two faces. The struts are joined together by node fittings. The framework can be packaged into a size and configuration transportable by a space shuttle. When deployed, the framework provides a large work/construction area and ample planar surface area for solar panels and thermal radiators. A plurity of modules are secured to the framework and then joined by tunnels to make an interconnected modular display. Thruster units for the space station orientation and altitude maintenance are provided.

Tool for Guiding An Auger

Auger and Ram have same pitch, which minimizes damage to workpiece and load carried by auger. Auger firmly fastened onto ram shaft by screw and kept from rotating on shaft by slot machined into end of stem and male driving lug that engages slot. Used to install threaded studs in plastic or rubber where impractical to mold them in.

Low-onset-rate energy absorber

Device controls deceleration rates without amplifying system loads. It dissipates energy of motion through friction heat and is 22 times more efficient than automobile brakes.

Apollo couch energy absorbers

Load attenuators for the Apollo spacecraft crew couch and its potential applications are described. Energy absorption is achieved through friction and cyclic deformation of material. In one concept, energy absorption is accomplished by rolling a compressed ring of metal between two surfaces. In another concept, energy is absorbed by forcing a plastically deformed washer along a rod. Among the design problems that had to be solved were material selection, fatigue life, ring slippage, lubrication, and friction loading.
