Decay spectroscopy of 160 Eu: Quasiparticle configurations of excited states and structure of K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd

Background: Detailed spectroscopy of neutron-rich, heavy, deformed nuclei is of broad interest for nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure. Nuclei in the r-process path and following freeze-out region impact the resulting r-process abundance distribution, and the structure of nuclei midshell in both proton and neutron number helps to understand the evolution of subshell gaps and large deformation in these nuclei. Purpose: We aim to improve the understanding of the nuclear structure of 160 Gd, specifically the K π = 4 + bands, as well as study the β decay of 160 Eu into 160 Gd. Methods: High-statistics decay spectroscopy of 160 Gd resulting from the β-decay of 160 Eu was collected using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. Results: Two new excited states and ten new transitions were observed in 160 Gd. The β-decaying half-lives of the low- and high-spin isomers in 160 Eu were determined, and the low-spin state's half-life was measured to be t 1/2 = 26.0 (8) s, ≈ 16% shorter than previous measurements. Lifetimes of the two K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd were measured for the first time, as well as γ – γ angular correlations and mixing ratios of intense transitions out of those bandheads. Conclusions: Lifetimes and mixing ratios suggest that the hexadecapole phonon model of the K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd is preferred over a simple two-state strong mixing scenario, although further theoretical calculations are needed to fully understand these states. Additionally, the 1999.0-keV state in 160 Gd heavily populated in β decay is shown to have positive parity, which raises questions regarding the structure of the high-spin β-decaying state in 160 Eu.

Single neutron transfer on 23 Ne and its relevance for the pathway of nucleosynthesis in astrophysical X-ray bursts

We present new experimental measurements of resonance strengths in the astrophysical 23 Al($p, γ$) 24 Si reaction, constraining the pathway of nucleosynthesis beyond 22 Mg in X-ray burster scenarios. Specifically, we have performed the first measurement of the ($d, p$) reaction using a radioactive beam of 23 Ne to explore levels in 24 Ne, the mirror analog of 24 Si. Four strong single-particle states were observed and corresponding neutron spectroscopic factors were extracted with a precision of ~20%. Using these spectroscopic factors, together with mirror state identifications, we have reduced uncertainties in the strength of the key ℓ = 0 resonance at $E_r$ = 157 keV, in the astrophysical 23 Al($p, γ$) reaction, by a factor of 4. Our results show that the 22 Mg($p, γ$) 23 Al($p, γ$) pathway dominates over the competing 22 Mg($α, γ$) reaction in all but the most energetic X-ray burster events (T > 0.85 GK), significantly affecting energy production and the preservation of hydrogen fuel.

Coulomb excitation of the | T z | = 1 2 , A = 23 mirror pair

Background: Electric-quadrupole ( E 2 ) strengths relate to the underlying quadrupole deformation of a nucleus and present a challenge for many nuclear theories. Additionally, mirror nuclei in the vicinity of the line of N = Z represent a convenient laboratory for testing deficiencies in such models, making use of the isospin symmetry of the systems. Purpose: Uncertainties associated with literature E 2 strengths in Mg 23 are some of the largest in T z = | 1 2 | nuclei in the s d shell. The purpose of the present paper is to improve the precision with which these values are known, to enable better comparison with theoretical models. Methods: Coulomb-excitation measurements of Mg 23 and Na 23 were performed at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility using the TIGRESS spectrometer. They were used to determine the E 2 matrix elements of mixed E 2 / M 1 transitions. Results: Reduced E 2 transition strengths, B ( E 2 ) , were extracted for Mg 23 and Na 23 . Their precision was improved by factors of approximately 6 for both isotopes, while agreeing within uncertainties with previous measurements. Conclusions: A comparison was made with both shell-model and ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations. Valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations were found to underpredict the absolute E 2 strength, in agreement with previous studies.

Mirror nucleon removal reactions in p-shell nuclei

Nucleon removal reactions have been shown to be an effective tool for studying the single particle structure of nuclei. This work continues efforts to experimentally probe and benchmark the reaction and structure models used to calculate the removal reaction cross sections when using microscopic nuclear structure inputs. Here, three different single nucleon removal reactions were performed, from p -shell nuclei with masses A = 7, 9, and 10. The residual nuclei from the reactions were detected in coincidence with γ rays to determine partial cross sections to individual final states. The eikonal direct-reaction model is combined with overlap functions and residual nucleus densities from microscopic, variational Monte Carlo calculations to provide consistent nuclear structure input to the partial cross section calculations. Comparisons of measured and calculated cross sections, including for mirror reactions, are presented. The analysis of the partial cross sections leading to the ground states shows a similar behavior to the one observed from analyses of inclusive cross sections using shell model nuclear structure input: the theoretical description of the removal process is in better agreement with the data when removing weakly bound nucleons, than when removing well-bound ones. The two mirror reaction pairs presented here show consistent results between the respective members of the pairs. The results obtained for the population of the excited states, however, show a systematically different trend that appears connected to the structure part of the calculation. Additional cases are needed to better understand the respective roles of structure and dynamical effects in the deviations.

Signature splitting of the g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in Ba 131 and Ce 133

Excited states in Ba 131 and Ce 133 were studied using in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy through the Sn 122 ( C 13 , 4 n ) Ba 131 and Te 125 ( C 12 , 4 n ) Ce 133 reactions, respectively. A strongly coupled band, associated with the ν g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + configuration, was identified in Ba 131 and Ce 133 . It is the first time to observe the ν g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the N = 75 isotones. The signature partners exhibit considerable energy splitting in comparison with those in the π g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the odd- A Ta and Re isotopes. Here, extensive cranked shell model and quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations reveal the origin of the signature splitting, which depends not only on the triaxiality, but also on the configuration mixing with nearby low- j orbitals.

Absence of Low-Energy Shape Coexistence in 80 Ge: The Nonobservation of a Proposed Excited 0 2 + Level at 639 keV

The 80 Ge structure was investigated in a high-statistics β-decay experiment of 80 Ga using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC through γ, β-e, e-γ and γ-γ spectroscopy. No evidence was found for the recently reported 0 2 + 639-keV level suggested as evidence for low-energy shape coexistence in 80Ge. Large-scale shell model calculations performed in 78,80,82 Ge place the 0 2 + level in 80 Ge at 2 MeV. The new experimental evidence combined with shell model predictions indicate that low-energy shape coexistence is not present in 80 Ge.
