The sublimation kinetics of GeSe single crystals

The sublimation kinetics of (001) oriented GeSe single crystal platelets was studied by high-temperature mass spectroscopy, quantitative vacuum microbalance techniques, and hot stage optical microscopy. For a mean experimental temperature of 563 K, the activation enthalpy and entropy are found to equal 32.3 kcal/mole and 19.1 eu, respectively. The vaporization coefficient is less than unity for the range of test temperatures, and decreases with increasing temperature. The combined experimental data are correlated by means of a multistep surface adsorption mechanism.

Vapor growth of GeTe single crystals in micro-gravity

The positive effects of micro-gravity on crystal growth and fundamental properties of the vapor transport reaction were established by analyzing the results of GeSe and GeTe vapor transport experiments performed on board Skylab. The analysis was based on a direct comparison of GeSe and GeTe crystals and of mass transport rate data obtained on earth and in space. For this purpose, a total of six transport experiments employing different concentrations of transport agent (GeI4) and two temperature gradients were performed during the Skylab 3 and 4 missions. Extensive ground-based studies demonstrated that the crystal morphology and the mass transport rates of the above systems are affected by the transport conditions, in particular by gravity-driven convection. The results demonstrate unambiguously a considerable improvement of the space crystals in terms of surface perfection, crystalline homogeneity and defect density. The observation of greater mass transport rates than expected in micro-gravity environment is of basic scientific and technological significance. This indicates that conventional transport models are incomplete and demonstrates that crystals of improved quality can be grown at reasonable rates by this technique in space. Results are of practical importance for the modification of crystal growth techniques on earth.

Knudsen measurements of the sublimation and the heat of formation of GeSe

Knudsen effusion studies of the sublimation of polycrystalline GeSe have been performed employing mass spectrometry. The results demonstrate that GeSe vaporizes congruently under present experimental conditions according to the reaction: GeSe(s) yields GeSe(g). The mean values for the third-law heat and second-law entropy of reaction based on direct mass-loss data are 42.0 + or - 1.5 kcal/mole and 42.3 + or - 1.6 eu respectively. From these data the standard heat of formation was calculated to be -10.1 + or - 2.0 kcal/mole, and the standard absolute entropy was determined to be 16.9 + or - 2.0 eu.

Solid-gas phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of cadmium selenide.

Accurate vapor pressures are determined through direct weight loss measurements using the Knudsen effusion technique. The experimental data are evaluated by establishing the mode of vaporization and determining the heat capacity of cadmium selenide at elevated temperatures. Additional information is obtained through a second- and third-law evaluation of data, namely, the heat of formation and the absolute entropy of cadmium selenide. A preferential loss of selenium during the initial heating of CdSe is observed, which leads to a deviation in stoichiometry.
