This dataset contains covariance libraries created for SCALE. These will be distributed by providing documentation and metadata in GitLab repos hosted by ORNL (code.ornl.gov/scale/data/cov-libs), and the main datasets are hosted in S3-based ORNL servers. The data are also contained in Constellation. More documentation can be found in PUB ID 263037.

Delayed neutron precursor (DNP) group data are important for modeling reactor dynamics. Although the data for individual DNPs have been developed over time, the DNP group data present in the Evaluated Nuclear Data Files (ENDF) have not been updated in the past 20 years. In this work, we use SCALE to recreate the Godiva experiment that was used to generate the original DNP group structure for fast fission of 235U. However, each DNP is modeled using up-to-date data, and the results are then converted into a newly updated group structure. This conversion uses an iterative linear least squares solver to minimize chi-squared. The approaches used in this work also enable energy spectrum generation and uncertainty tracking. The method used in this paper for fast 235U fission DNP group structure updating can be applied to different energies and fissile nuclides. Demonstration of the uncertainty tracking in reactor kinetics and dynamics simulations is shown using point reactor kinetics simulations. Results show that there are data discrepancies between the International Atomic Energy Agency database and data used in ORIGEN, which are currently being fixed. Results also show that the proposed method for group spectra generation performs well.

This work introduces recently implemented capabilities in the SCALE code system’s TRITON reactor physics sequence that improve molten salt reactor (MSR) modeling: (1) a volume balancing option, which automatically balances the volumes of the fed material with a corresponding material removal to maintain fixed mixture volumes in the neutron transport model and accurate densities, and (2) continuous feed from mixtures, which enables users to define material feed streams directly from salt mixture definitions rather than individual nuclides. The new capabilities were demonstrated via SCALE/TRITON simulations of two representative MSR concepts. Simulations of the 180 MWth molten chloride fast reactor—a system with a fixed fuel salt volume in the reactor core—applied continuous refueling with fresh fuel salt. The results confirm approximately constant reactivity when the new volume balancing capability is used. Additionally, excellent agreement with a manual feed-and-drain method for volume balancing further verified the new implementation. Simulations of the 400 MWth EIRENE reactor, an integral MSR in which the salt volume may grow over time within the reactor core, demonstrated the capability to represent growing salt volume within the TRITON depletion calculation. Compared with reference solutions, the results show consistent trends in reactivity and isotopic evolution, confirming that these new user-friendly capabilities provide accurate, physically consistent approaches for modeling MSRs in SCALE.
