Tomographic Imaging Of Low-Density Inclusions

Computed neutron tomography reveals structure of volume containing material of lesser density surrounded by material of greater density. Technique used, for example, to examine and measure flaws or other inclusions containing equally dense or less-dense material hidden in complicated structure made of denser material.

Enhanced Eddy-Current Detection Of Weld Flaws

Mixing of impedances measured at different frequencies reduces noise and helps reveal flaws. In new method, one excites eddy-current probe simultaneously at two different frequencies; usually, one of which integral multiple of other. Resistive and reactive components of impedance of eddy-current probe measured at two frequencies, mixed in computer, and displayed in real time on video terminal of computer. Mixing of measurements obtained at two different frequencies often "cleans up" displayed signal in situations in which band-pass filtering alone cannot: mixing removes most noise, and displayed signal resolves flaws well.

Artificial Intelligence Assists Ultrasonic Inspection

Subtle indications of flaws extracted from ultrasonic waveforms. Ultrasonic-inspection system uses artificial intelligence to help in identification of hidden flaws in electron-beam-welded castings. System involves application of flaw-classification logic to analysis of ultrasonic waveforms.

Tomographic Measurement Of Laser-Bored Holes

Nondestructive technique detects internal variations in arrays of small holes. Inspection method checks laser-bored holes for accuracy. Combines computed tomography and digital laminography. Both types of views made at many parallel planes within plate. System prints out tables of measured and standard deviation of diameter at all planes for each hole.
