NASA ATD-2 Trajectory Option Set Prototype Capability for Rerouting Departures in Metroplex Airspace

This video recorded presentation is about the NASA’s Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) Phase 3 prototype capability that is being tested in the North Texas region through summer 2021. For the first time, a shared Decision Support Tool (DST) provides opportunities for participating Flight Operators (FOs) and Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) to coordinate using a Trajectory Option Set (TOS). When the metroplex airspace is impacted by demand/capacity imbalances, TOS enables departure flights to be rerouted to alternative departure routes with less surface delay.

NASA ATD2/DIP SWIFT Update

This briefing includes real-time machine learning based services powered by SWIM and discussion of the opportunity to engage in NASA’s Digital Information Platform effort.

ATD-2 Digital Services / DIP

The path to NAS-wide implementation for ATD-2 multi-airport IADS is as a digital service for flight operators that builds on and supplements FAA TBO investments. This session will focus on a suite of Machine Learning (ML) services the ATD-2 team developed to model airport surface operations. The approach used to leverage SWIM data sets will be described and a preliminary analysis of ML model accuracy will be presented. NASA’s plans to build on this work under the ATM-X Digital Information Platform (DIP) sub-project will be discussed.

DIP Architecture and Data Integration Services

This workshop will cover DIP architecture and data integration services. Participants will get a look at how the DIP architecture is set-up as well as how data integration services are planned to be hosted on the platform. The DIP architecture review is intended to cover how DIP was envisioned and how DIP is being developed to address data needs across the industry. Participants will have a chance to provide feedback on the DIP architecture and gain insight into how one might interface with the DIP to send or receive data. The data integration services portion is intended to cover DIP’s technical approach to data integration. As an example implementation, there will be a first look at possible data fusion on the platform, including utilizing NASA’s Fuser, and tailoring for industry data consumers. Descriptions, at a high-level, of input to and output of the Fuser will also be discussed.

DIP - Digital Information Platform

Brief updates of Digital Information Platform (DIP) plans for platform-enabled sustainable aviation services. DIP will provide the capability to integrate key flight information from multiple sources and make it easier to access data critical to developing services using advanced techniques such as machine learning. NASA will share ML-based microservices on the platform for industry to use as reference implementations. The platform will support an ecosystem to share reusable services and promote innovation for digital information.

ATD-2 Field Evaluation of Pre-Departure Trajectory Option Set Reroutes in North Texas Metroplex

The NASA Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 Phase 3 capabilities extend Integrated Arrival, Departure and Surface scheduling to a Metroplex environment where multiple airports are interacting and sharing resources along the terminal boundary. The Phase 3 coordinated scheduling provides pre-departure reroute recommendations to flight operators which reduce delay caused by terminal restrictions. This paper reports results of the Phase 3 Stormy 2021 Field Evaluation conducted between November 2020 and September 2021 in the North Texas Metroplex. During the field evaluation NASA partnered with the FAA, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Envoy Airlines to evaluate Phase 3 capabilities in an operational environment. The benefits results are provided as delay savings metrics measured in time and converted to fuel and emissions savings using detailed fuel flow models provided by flight operators.
