Thermal stresses in bonded solar cells - The effect of the adhesive layer

A two-dimensional, rectangular model of a proposed solar cell structure is analyzed as two plate elements bonded with an elastic continuum. The governing equations are formulated using the principle of minimum potential energy, with displacement components that vary linearly through the thickness of the adhesive layer. An approximate solution is constructed for a particular class of material properties and is characterized by a boundary layer near the unloaded edge. Both interface stress components achieve their largest values at the edge, and the maximum shear stress is independent of the Young's Modulus of the substrate.

Automatic Calibration Systems

A continuous requirement exists for calibration and environmental testing of instruments in use at multitude of test facilities at Langley Research Center. Brief summarizes several automated systems available for calibration of research instruments to include: six-component balance, multimeter, amplifier, pyrometer, voltage-controlled oscillator, pressure transducer and accelerometer.

Analysis of a laterally loaded ring with a hinged cross section.

A ring assembly constructed by lacing together three elements into a basic channel cross section is analyzed. The ring is supported at three equidistant points and loaded by a uniform distribution of radial and transverse loads. Bulkheads may be introduced at discrete cross sections to prevent distortion. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the behavior of the deflection as the number and location of the bulkheads and the degree of rigidity of the supports are varied. The method of analysis is an application of the Principle of Virtual Work within the framework of small displacement theory. Numerical results are presented for the geometrical parameters of a model. An important result is the observation that bulkheads have virtually no effect on the deflections of the web.

Stability of structural rings under uniformly distributed radial loads

Energy method analysis establishes parameters governing stability of circular rings acted upon by constant, uniformly distributed loads. Energy method is used so that nonlinear behavior of structure before buckling can be accounted for. Method affords conceptually superior basis for analyzing the axisymmetric deviation mode.
