State selectivity in core ionization of methane

A clear experimental signature of the population of the lowest triplet state T 1 3 of the methane dication is identified in a photoionization experiment. This state is populated only in valence ionization and is absent when the dication is formed by core ionization followed by Auger-Meitner decay. For valence ionization, the total internal energy of the CH 3 + fragment, formed during the deprotonation of CH 4 2 + , is evaluated. Notably, the distribution of this internal energy peaks at the same value regardless of the initially populated electronic state of CH 4 2 + . We find that excited electronic states of CH 3 + are predominantly populated with significant rovibrational excitation. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Theoretical and experimental studies of error in square-law detector circuits

Square law detector circuits to determine errors from the ideal input/output characteristic function were investigated. The nonlinear circuit response is analyzed by a power series expansion containing terms through the fourth degree, from which the significant deviation from square law can be predicted. Both fixed bias current and flexible bias current configurations are considered. The latter case corresponds with the situation where the mean current can change with the application of a signal. Experimental investigations of the circuit arrangements are described. Agreement between the analytical models and the experimental results are established. Factors which contribute to differences under certain conditions are outlined.

An investigation of the existence of a surface water layer on aircraft radomes during simulated flight in heavy precipitation

An experiment to investigate the electromagnetic attenuation effects of an impacting water spray on an aircraft weather radome was conducted in Langley's 4 X 7 m. wind tunnel equipped with a water spray system. Results indicate no significant liquid water film formed at the stagnation point of the radome under the test conditions. However, a water sheath was observed standing away from the radome surface, which could possibly have significant attenuation properties of its own. Due to the lack of fidelity in modeling both the natural environment with the tunnel apparatus and the water sheath, it is recommended that further studies be undertaken to better define the water distribution in the vicinity of the radome and measure its effect on weather radar performance.

Microprogramed Sequencer for Tunable RF Oscillator

Standard IC chips and digitally tuned oscillator combined. Circuit consists of PROM-based microprogramed control sequencer, which drives group of diode switches to select one of eight tuning capacitors in L-C oscillator. Circuit originally designed to "dither" transmitter frequency of K-band radar at high rates finds application in other areas, as automated test equipment or computer-controlled receiver tuning.

Temperature controller for hyperthermia devices

Temperature controller monitors and controls temperature in local region of tumor. Medical grade thermocouples are inserted in or near tumor, controller pulse modulates radio frequency diathermy power source to maintain temperature within 0.2 C. System may be extended to control diathermy of more than one tumor or patient.

Bisphenol A polycarbonate as a reference material

Test methods require reference materials to standardize and maintain quality control. Various materials have been evaluated as possible reference materials, including a sample of bisphenol A polycarbonate without additives. Screening tests for relative toxicity under various experimental conditions were performed using male mice exposed to pyrolysis effluents over a 200-800 C temperature range. It was found that the bisphenol A polycarbonate served as a suitable reference material as it is available in large quantities, and does not significantly change with time.
