Drag coefficients for astronomical observatory satellites

The first experimental European communications satellite Symphonie is a geostationary satellite. The satellite is designed and built in a joint project by French and German aerospace firms. A description is given of the basic technical concept of the satellite. The apogee motor is discussed along with the satellite stabilization system. The stabilization system provides a three-axis positional stabilization and an orbital stabilization. Attention is given to the spin stabilization phase, the sensors employed, the approache used for orbital correction maneuvers, and the conduction of simulation tests on the ground.

A new arc heater shroud test technique for thermo-structural testing of full-scale, nose-tip skirt materials

An arc heater shroud test technique was developed for thermostructural testing of full-scale, missile nose tip-skirt assemblies. Reentry trajectory simulation is provided by changing the arc heater operation in a prescribed manner through manual and automatic controls. Excellent test repeatability allows screening of materials by direct comparison of test results. Continuous recordings of model surface temperature, pressure, heat flux, and model internal temperatures are made at several locations during the test.

Testing superalloys at 2000 (1367) and 2200 F (1478 K) in a Mach 4.6 airstream

Seven superalloy models were tested in a plasma arc tunnel facility. The test models were 3 in. (7.62cm) square flat surfaces (nominally 0.01 to 0.02 in. (0.0254 to 0.0508 cm) thick) held in a water-cooled wedge holder at a 60 deg (1.05 rad) angle of attack. The models were cycled 25 times (two were cycled 50 times) for 10 min each cycle in a Mach 4.6 test stream with the model leading edge temperature maintained at 2200 F (1478 K) (one at 2000 F (1367 K)). Backface temperatures were measured with four platinum-platinum 10% rhodium thermocouples and the front surface temperatures with an optical pyrometer. Four different nickel base alloy materials and one cobalt material were evaluated.
