Photoenhanced thermal oxidation of InP

The growth rate of laser-photoenhanced thermally grown native oxides of InP in a N2O ambient and its dependence on growth condition are presented. Increased laser power, substrate temperature, and N2O pressure are observed to increase the growth rate. The topography and the composition of these oxides have been studied using secondary electron microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, respectively. The oxide layers contain In2O3 and a phosphate, probably InPO4. The enhanced growth appears to be caused by both excited oxidizing species and a photon-enhanced surface reaction.

Josephson junction interference grating.

The maximum current through multiple Josephson structures as a function of applied magnetic field is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the Josephson penetration depth effects and geometrical considerations. The symmetrical and asymmetrical current feed two-, three-, four-, and five-junction gratings are analyzed and discussed. The Josephson penetration depth is shown to control the amplitude of the interference and diffraction patterns of the interference grating. In addition the interior-junction-length/interference-loop-area product is shown to control the operating mode of the interference grating. The dependence of the magnetic field sensitivity and interference pattern amplitude on the number of junctions is discussed.

Critical current periodicity of Josephson junction interferometers.

Numerical calculation of the critical current through a Josephson junction interferometer, taking into consideration the effect of applied and self-induced magnetic fields on the junctions and in the interference loop. The periodicity of the interference pattern is shown to be less than the flux quantum. Quantitative results are given which illustrate the degree of deviation in periodicity from the flux quantum.

Three-Josephson-junction interferometer.

An analysis shows that a three-Josephson-junction asymmetric-feed quantum interferometer has increased magnetic field sensitivity and amplitude deviation over those of a two-junction interferometer. The critical current at zero applied field is lower than the critical current at zero flux in the interference loop.

Preferential orientation of CO adsorption on Ni as determined by extended Hueckel calculations.

The adsorption of CO on the nickel surface has been calculated using a modified extended Hueckel technique for a number of different orientations of the CO with respect to the nickel surface. The calculations show that double site adsorption with the CO molecule normal to the surface and the carbon atom closest to the metal gives the most stable configuration (2.57 eV). The single site absorbs with an energy of 2.39 eV. However, other configurations also give fairly large bonding energies. The CO normal to the surface with oxygen closest to the metal gives a heat of adsorption of 0.37 eV. Two-center adsorption with the CO axis parallel to the surface and the molecule symmetrically placed between the nearest neighbors gives a chemisorption energy of 1.34 eV. These values compare with an experimental value of 1.98 eV.

A thin polymer insulator for Josephson tunneling applications

The progress made towards forming thin organic layers on superconductors and how these layers effect the transition temperature is discussed. The work was primarily directed towards 1) synthesis of the organics, 2) deposition of organics, and 3) setting up to make transition temperature measurements. The greatest effort was placed on synthesis, and most of the synthesis procedures are now perfected.
