Update on CMH-17 Volume 5: Ceramic Matrix Composites

CMC components are projected to enter service in commercial aircraft in 2016. A wide range of issues must be addressed prior to certification of this hardware. The Composite Materials Handbook-17, Volume 5 on ceramic matrix composites is being revised to support FAA certification of CMCs for hot structure and other elevated temperature applications. The handbook supports the development and use of CMCs through publishing and maintaining proven, reliable engineering information and standards that have been thoroughly reviewed. Volume 5 will contain detailed sections describing CMC materials processing, design analysis guidelines, testing procedures, and data analysis and acceptance. A review of the status of and plans for two of these areas, which are being addressed by the M and P Working Group and the Testing Working Group, will be presented along with a timeline for the preparation of CMH-17, Volume 5.

Mission to Planet Earth

Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE) is NASA's concept for an international science program to produce the understanding needed to predict changes in the earth's environment. NASA and its interagency and international partners will place satellites carrying advanced sensors in strategic earth orbits to gather multidisciplinary data. A sophisticated data system will process and archive an unprecedented amount of information about the earth and how it works as a system. Increased understanding of the earth system is a basic human responsibility, a prerequisite to informed management of the planet's resources and to the preservation of the global environment.

Mission to Planet Earth

The NASA program described is an international study to predict changes in the earth's environment by means of multidisciplinary remote sensing from satellites. An international consortium dedicates satellites with advanced sensors to data collection, and a data processing system is described to collect and analyze a large amount of terrestrial data. The program requires international multidisciplinary involvement to collect and interpret the data and thereby manage and preserve the global environment.

Mission to Planet Earth

The rationale behind Mission to Planet Earth is presented, and the program plan is described in detail. NASA and its interagency and international partners will place satellites carrying advanced sensors in strategic earth orbits to collect muultidisciplinary data. A sophisticated data system will process and archive an unprecedented large amount of information about the earth and how it functions as a system. Attention is given to the space observatories, the data and information systems, and the interdisciplinary research.

NASA's Earth Science Geostationary Platform

This paper describes the features of the NASA Earth Science Geostationary Platform (ESGP) scheduled for launch in 1998, discusses the objectives of the ESGP's steering committee, and presents a summary status report on the committee's activity. Special attention is given to the elements of the ESGP concept and requirements and to the ESGP program schedule options. A diagram of the ESGP concept is included.

Use of MCIDAS as an earth science information systems tool

The application of the man computer interactive data access system (MCIDAS) to information processing is examined. The computer systems that interface with the MCIDAS are discussed. Consideration is given to the computer networking of MCIDAS, data base archival, and the collection and distribution of real-time special sensor microwave/imager data.

Detection of mountain-induced mesoscale wave structures with high resolution moisture imagery

During a multispectral atmospheric mapping sensor flight onboard a NASA U2 high altitude aircraft in 1985, wave features were found in water vapor channel imagery in the vicinity of the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. The paper presents evidence for the existence of lee waves in the absence of clouds. An evaluation of wind profiles and stability in the surrounding region supports the existence of these waves.
