Kinematic constraints on the production of magnetic monopoles

A strict lower limit is derived for the laboratory kinetic energy of a magnetic monopole produced from a target at rest. The production of a monopole-antimonopole pair via the collision of a projectile with a target at rest in the laboratory is analyzed in terms of the velocity of the zero-momentum frame, the velocity of the monopole in that frame, and the velocity of the monopole in the laboratory. The limit obtained is applied to the data of Price et al. (1975), and almost all means of producing the monopole in the atmosphere immediately above the balloon-borne detectors are ruled out. Some mechanisms for slowing a monopole following its production are briefly considered.

Analytic variational calculation of the ground-state binding energy of hydrogen in intermediate and intense magnetic fields

The present work investigates analytically the effect of an intermediate or intense magnetic field, such as probably exist in white dwarfs and near pulsars, on the binding energy of the hydrogen ground state. A wave-function 'prescription' is given for an analytic variational calculation of the binding energy. The calculation still gives a smooth transition between intermediate and intense fields. An explicit calculation of the ground-state binding energy as B goes to infinity is provided for the Yafet et al. (1956) trial function.

Advanced protective coating for superalloys

Superior oxidation protection for nickel-base alloys at temperatures up to 1367 K was obtained with cobalt-base alloy coating. Coating had 25 Cr, 14 Al, and 0.5 Y weight percent composition. Coating was applied by electron beam vapor deposition to thickness of 76 to 127 microns.
