Hydroesterification of Polycyclooctene to Access Linear Ethylene Ethyl Acrylate Copolymers as a Step Toward Polyolefin Functionalization

To advance a strategy of polymer-to-polymer upcycling of waste polyolefin by dehydrogenation then functionalization, we report successful hydroesterification of polycyclooctene (PCOE), an analogue for partially unsaturated polyethylene. Here, we convert PCOE to a linear analog for poly(ethylene-co-ethyl acrylate) (EEA) across a range of ethyl acrylate incorporations (0 to 18 mol % of ethylene units). The ester incorporation was well controlled by reaction time, and the remaining C=C bonds were subsequently hydrogenated. Here, the bulky ethyl acrylate groups did not incorporate into orthorhombic PE crystals, decreasing the crystallinity, crystallite size, and melting temperature with increasing functionalization. Additionally, hydroesterification tuned the dynamic mechanical properties, decreasing both the glass transition temperature and the storage modulus in the rubbery regime with greater functionalization. The linear EEA analogs reported here achieve remarkable extensibility (strain > 4000%) and high toughness, comparable to commercial random and branched EEA. Ultimately, we demonstrate successful conversion of an analogue to dehydrogenated PE to a linear EEA with favorable mechanical properties.

Incorporation of Thioacetate Pendants on a Polyalkenamer Enables High Extensibility

This study focuses on functionalizing polycyclooctene (PCOE) with thioacetate groups using thiol–ene click chemistry. The ethylene thioacetate (EVSA) copolymers produced vary in thioacetate incorporation (4–25 mol %) via a controlled semibatch addition technique with AIBN dosing. Copolymers with 4–14 mol % thioacetate are semicrystalline, while those with 20–25 mol % are amorphous. Increased functionalization correlates with decreased crystallinity and increased stretchability, with the highest functionalization (25 mol %) showing a modulus of 0.045 MPa and 2000% elongation at break. Here, this behavior is due to the pseudoprecise functionalization of the thioacetate pendants and intrinsic cross-linking that occurs during melt processing. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) indicates a low activation energy barrier (16 kJ/mol for the β process), suggesting potential self-healing applications.

Partial Solvation of Lithium Ions Enhances Conductivity in a Nanophase-Separated Polymer Electrolyte

In this study, we demonstrate that a multiblock lithium-ion-conducting polymer can be swollen with ethylene carbonate solvent to increase the conductivity relative to the dry polymer material by nearly 4 orders of magnitude. This increase is due to the partial solvation of lithium ions by ethylene carbonate, which leads to Li + diffusion along the solvent–polymer interface. This differs from the vehicular transport mechanism for lithium ions in pure solvent. We use a combination of broadband dielectric spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, and all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to probe the effect of the solvent on the polymer morphology and to elucidate the mechanism of lithium ion transport.

Structural Effects on Solubility and Crystallinity in Polyamide Ionomers

Although polyamides have been an industrial staple for decades, their solubility and processability remain limited due to the strong hydrogen bonding between amide groups. Here, we report a family of polyamides in which aryl rings, alkyl spacers, sulfonate groups, and amide linkages are regularly spaced along the polymer backbone, allowing us to probe the structural elements that affect processability. We accessed these polymers through a synthetic route based on an expanded diamine monomer and characterized them through a range of physical and spectroscopic techniques. Our results show that the combination of sulfonate groups with increased amide content results in highly soluble polymers, which can dissolve in polar solvents such as water, methanol, and N,N-dimethylformamide. Infrared spectroscopy on the solid polymers shows that the aliphatic amides engage in hydrogen bonding with the sulfonate groups, thus inhibiting ion aggregation, crystallization, and microphase separation. These findings expand the avenue to sulfonate-containing polyamide chemistry and provide design rules for the synthesis of more processable ionic polyamides.

N 2 O deconstruction of polycyclooctene to generate carbonyl-functionalized macromonomers

Deconstruction of polyolefins into functionalized macromonomers presents a compelling strategy for polyolefin upcycling by creating macromonomers through dehydrogenation/depolymerization. We show that nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a greenhouse gas waste product from the production of nylon, mediates the deconstruction of polycyclooctene (PCOE) and generates carbonyl-functionalized macromonomers. Carbonyl incorporation and macromonomer molar mass were well controlled by reaction time, and subsequent hydrogenation readily removed residual carbon-carbon double bonds. Here, we also demonstrated that the reaction could progress efficiently with substrates of moderate levels of unsaturation, closely mimicking partially dehydrogenated polyethylene. Such carbonyl-functionalized macromonomers could serve as feedstock for preparing vitrimers and other functional polymers.

Coupling and Decoupling between Stickers and Backbones in Associating Polymers with Terminally Functionalized Side Chains

Associating polymers have recently attracted tremendous attention as self-healing polymers due to the dynamic reversibility of sticker association–dissociation processes. These sticker dynamics inevitably slow significantly as segmental dynamics decelerate below the glass transition temperature that limits the operational temperatures of associating polymers. Using broadband dielectric spectroscopy on a new set of associating polymers composed side chains of various lengths and terminal carboxylic-acid sticker functionality, we discovered an unexpected decoupling near the glass transition (T g ) between the slower backbone and fast sticker motions. These two motions have distinct activation energies for the motion of the sulfur linkage adjacent to the backbone (~22 to 26 kJ/mol) and the carboxylic acid groups (~5 to 8 kJ/mol). A second decoupling appears in the polymer with the longest side chain length at T g – 20 K, reflecting the dynamics of various carboxylic acid binding configurations. Furthermore, our findings open the door to design associating polymers with the capability of sticker association/dissociation at low temperatures.

Hydrocarboxylation of C=C Bonds in Polycyclooctene: Progress Toward Valorization of Waste Polyolefins

Upcycling of waste polyolefins into higher-value functional polymers through chemical functionalization is a promising strategy to recover value and minimize their environmental impact. We report the hydrocarboxylation of polycyclooctene as a model for accessing ethylene acrylic acid copolymers (EAA) from waste polyethylene. The effects of various process parameters on the hydrocarboxylation were investigated. The relationship between carboxylic acid concentration and material properties, including crystallinity, melting temperature, glass transition temperature, adhesive properties, and wettability, was studied in comparison to an unfunctionalized polyethylene. Among the catalysts evaluated, Co 2 (CO) 8 exhibited relatively slow kinetics toward the hydrocarboxylation and was not compatible with 2,6-di-tert-butyl hydroxytoluene, a common additive present in commercial polyolefins. PdCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 exhibited a higher reactivity toward the hydrocarboxylation, though polymer gelation was observed with extended reaction times or high catalyst loadings. Carboxylic acid incorporation into the polymer was readily controlled by varying the reaction time. Altogether, the resultant COOH-functionalized polyolefins possessed properties analogous to commercial EAA.
