Fabrication techniques for polybenzimidazole composites

Performance of polybenzimidazole composites as ablation shields can be substantially improved by thermal crosslinking. Program was designed to develop new processing methods and techniques for fabrication of polybenzimidazole composites. Report, which describes fabrication in detail, also includes specification and manufacturing standards.

Methanator Fueled Engines for Pollution Control

A methanator fueled Otto-cycle engine is compared with other methods proposed to control pollution due to automobile exhaust emissions. The comparison is made with respect to state of development, emission factors, capital cost, operational and maintenance costs, performance, operational limitations, and impact on the automotive industries. The methanator fueled Otto-cycle engine is projected to meet 1975 emission standards and operate at a lower relative total cost compared to the catalytic muffler system and to have low impact. Additional study is required for system development.

Molecular configuration and pyrolysis reactions of phenolic-novolaks.

Description of a statistical method for characterizing the structure of an average phenolic-novolak prepolymer molecule in terms of the total number of phenolic nuclei that compose the molecule and the number of these nuclei that are pendent. It is only necessary to resort to experimental pyrolysis to evaluate the thermokinetic parameters for pyrolysis for the ablator. In addition, the fraction of phenolic involved in the major pyrolysis reactions can be estimated in terms of the parameters previously evaluated. It is shown that the overlapping reactions which occur during pyrolysis of a phenolic-novolak can be resolved by pyrolyzing samples with different extents of cure. It is then possible to determine the kinetic parameters for pyrolysis for the major reactions by well-known methods which often fail when reactions are not well resolved.
