Pre-exercise hypervolemia and cycle ergometer endurance in men

Time to exhaustion at 87-91% of peak VO2 was measured in 5 untrained men (age: 31 +/- 8 years, body mass: 74.20 +/- 16.50 kg, body surface area: 1.90 +/- 0.24 m2, peak VO2: 2.87 +/- 0.40 l min-1, plasma volume: 3.21 +/- 0.88 l; means +/-SD) after consuming nothing (N) or two fluid formulations (10 ml kg-1, 743 +/- 161 ml): Performance 1 (P1), a multi-ionic carbohydrate drink, containing 55 mEq l-1 Na+, 4.16 g l-1 citrate, 20.49 g l-1 glucose, and 365 mOsm kg-1 H2O, and AstroAde (AA), a sodium chloride-sodium citrate hyperhydration drink, containing 164 mEq l-1 Na+, 8.54 g l-1 citrate, <5 mg l-1 glucose, and 253 mOsm kg-1 H2O. Mean (+/-SE) endurance for N, P1 and AA was 24.68 +/- 1.50, 24.55 +/- 1.09, and 30.50 +/- 3.44 min respectively. Percent changes in plasma volume (PV) from -105 min of rest to zero min before exercise were -1.5 +/- 3.2% (N), 0.2 +/- 2.2% (P1), and 4.8 +/- 3.0% (AA; P < 0.05). The attenuated endurance for N and P1 could not be attributed to differences in exercise metabolism (VE, RE, VO2) from the carbohydrate or citrate, terminal heart rate, levels of perceived exertion, forehead or thigh skin blood flow velocity, changes or absolute termination levels of rectal temperature. Thus, the higher level of resting PV for AA just before exercise, as well as greater acid buffering and possible increased energy substrate from citrate, may have contributed to the greater endurance.

Drink composition and cycle-ergometer endurance in men: Carbohydrate, Na(+), osmolality

Cycle-ergometer endurance performance was determined in 5 untrained men (22-39 yr, 62.4-100.5 kg, 29-55 mL x min(exp -1) x kg(exp -1) peak oxygen uptake) after consuming Nothing (N) or two fluid formulations (10 mL x kg(exp -1), 555-998 mL). Performance 1 (P1), a multi-ionic-glucose rehydration drink, contains 55 mEq/L Na(exp +), 416 mg/dL citrate, 2,049 mg/dL glucose, and 365 mOsm/kgH2O. HyperAde (HA), a sodium chloride-citrate hyperhydration drink, contains 164 mEq/L Na(exp +), 854 mg/dL citrate, less than 0.5 mg/dL glucose, and 253 mOsm/kgH2O. Endurance at a load of 87-91 percent of peak VO2 was 30.50 +/- SE 3.44 min with HA; 24.55 +/- 1.09 min with P1 (p greater than 0.10 from HA); and 24.68 +/- 1.50 min with N (p less than 0.05 from HA). The attenuated endurance performance with P1 and N could not be attributed to differences in exercise metabolism, change or absolute level of rectal and mean skin temperature, or change in perceived exertion. The greater increase in resting plasma volume with HA, compared with P1 or N, probably contributed to the greater endurance with HA.

Hypervolemia During Drinking of ISO and Hypertonic Fluids by Men at Rest and Exercise

To test the hypothesis that drink composition is more important than osmolality (osm) for maintaining and increasing plasma vol. (PV, hypervolemia) at rest and exercise (21.8C Tdb, 50% rh), 6 men (22-39 vr) underwent six treatments while sitting for 90 min (0.39 l/min) followed by 70 min of sitting ergometer exercise (2.08 l/min, 70%vO2 peak). Resting, intermittent drinking (10 ml/kg, 768 ml) beverages were: P1 (20 mEq Na+, 365 mosmol/kg), P2 (40 mEq Na+. 791 mosm), P2G (40 mEq Na+, 80 ml glycerol, 1.392 mosm). AA (157 mEq Na+, 253 mosm), and 01 and 02 (nothing). The exercise drink (10 ml/kg, 768 ml) was P1 for all experiments, except 02 (nothing). Resting % delta PV (Hb-Hct) increased (P<0.05) by 3-6% only with P2 and AA, respectively, Exercise % delta PV was + 1 to + 3% (NS) with AA, -6% to 0% (KS) with P1, P2. P2G, and 01,and 8% to -5% (P<0.05) with 02- Thus, AA with 157 mEq Na+ and the lowest osmolality maintained PV at rest and exercise, while the other beverages with low Na+ and higher osmolality (365 to 1.382 mosm) did not.
