Design Status of the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider is gearing up for "Critical Decision 2", theproject baseline with defined scope, cost and schedule.Lattice designs are beingfinalized, and preliminary component design is being carried out. Beam dynamicsstudies such as dynamic aperture optimization, instability and polarizationstudies, and beam-beam simulations are continuing in parallel. We report onthe latest developments and the overall status of the project, and presentthe plans for future activities.

High-Field Design Concept for Second Interaction Region of the Electron-Ion Collider

Efficient realization of the scientific potential of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) calls for addition of a future second Interaction Region (2nd IR) and a detector in the RHIC IR8 region after the EIC project completion. The second IR and detector are needed to independently cross-check the results of the first detector, and to provide measurements with complementary acceptance. The available space in the existing RHIC IR8 and maximum fields achievable with NbTi superconducting magnet technology impose constraints on the 2nd IR performance. Since commissioning of the 2nd IR is envisioned in a few years after the first IR, such a long time frame allows for more R&D on the Nb₃Sn magnet technology. Thus, it could provide a potential alternative technology choice for the 2nd IR magnets. Presently, we are exploring its potential benefits for the 2nd IR performance, such as improvement of the luminosity and acceptance, and are also assessing the technical risks associated with use of Nb₃Sn magnets. In this paper, we present the current progress of this work.

Detector Solenoid Compensation for the Electron-Ion Collider

The central detector in the present EIC design includes a 4 m long solenoid with an integrated strength of up to 12 Tm. The electron beam passes on-axis through the solenoid, but the hadron beam has an angle of 25 mrad. Thus the solenoid couples horizontal and vertical betatron motion in both electron and hadron storage rings, and causes a vertical closed orbit excursion in the hadron ring. The solenoid also couples the transverse and longitudinal motions of both beams, when crab cavities are also considered. In this paper, we present schemes for closed orbit correction and coupling compensation at the IP, including crabbing.
