Hydrometeorological sensitivities of net ecosystem carbon dioxide and methane exchange of an Amazonian palm swamp peatland

Here, we report ecosystem-scale CO 2 and CH 4 flux observations for an Amazonian palm swamp peatland over a two-year period in relation to hydrometeorological forcings. Seasonal and short-term variations in hydrometeorological forcing had a strong effect on carbon dioxide and methane fluxes. High air temperature and vapor pressure deficit exerted an important limitation on photosynthesis during the dry season, while latent heat flux appeared to be insensitive to these climate drivers. Evidence from light-response analyses and flux partitioning support that photosynthetic activity was downregulated during dry conditions, while ecosystem respiration was either inhibited or enhanced depending on water table position. The cumulative net ecosystem carbon dioxide exchange indicated that the peatland was a significant carbon dioxide sink ranging from –465 (–279 to –651) g C m -2 y -1 in 2018 to –462 (–277 to –647) g C m -2 y -1 in 2019. The forest was a methane source of 22 (20 to 24) g C m -2 y -1 , similar in magnitude to other tropical peatlands and larger than boreal and arctic peatlands. Furthermore, the annual carbon budget of this Amazonian palm swamp peatland appears to be a major carbon sink under current hydrometeorological conditions, but evidence indicates that the sink strength is vulnerable to future climate change.

Acoustic emission from a solidifying aluminum-lithium alloy

Physical phenomena associated with the solidification of an AA2090 Al-Li alloy have been characterized by AE methods. Repeatable patterns of AE activity as a function of solidification time are recorded and explained for ultrahigh-purity (UHP) aluminum and an Al-4.7 wt pct Cu binary alloy, in addition to the AA2090 Al-Li alloy, by the complementary utilization of thermal, AE, and metallographic methods. One result shows that the solidification of UHP aluminum produces one discrete period of high AE activity as the last 10 percent of solid forms.

Deformations and strains in a thick adherend lap joint

Displacement fields in a thick adherend lap joint were measured by high-sensitivity moire interferometry. Contour maps of in-plane U and V displacements were obtained across adhesive and adherend surfaces. Loads ranged from a modest load to a near-failure load. Quantitative results are given for displacements and strains in the adhesive and along the adhesive/adherend boundary lines. The results show nearly constant shear strain in the adhesive, nonlinear strains as a function of load or average shear stress, and viscoelastic or time-dependent response. Longitudinal normal strains in the adhesive are nearly two orders of magnitude less than the shear strains. With its subwavelength displacement resolution and high spatial resolution, moire interferometry is especially well suited for deformation studies of adhesive joints.

Shear strain anomalies in composite beam specimens by moire interferometry

Experimental analyses were performed for determination of in-plane deformations and shear strains in unidirectional and quasi-isotropic graphite-epoxy beams. Forty-eight-ply beams were subjected to five-point and three-point flexure. Whole-field measurements were recorded at load levels from about 20 percent to more than 90 percent of failure loads. Contour maps of U and W displacement fields were obtained by moire interferometry, using reference gratings of 2400 lines/mm. Clearly defined fringes with fringe orders exceeding 1000 were obtained. Whole-field contour maps of shear strains were obtained. Various anomalous effects were detected in the displacement fields. Their analysis indicated excess shear strains in resin-rich zones in regions of shear tractions; free-edge shear strains in quasi-isotropic specimens in regions of normal stresses, and shear stresses associated with cyclic shear compliances of quasi-isotropic laminates in regions of shear tractions. Their contributions could occur independently or in superposition. Qualitative analyses addressed questions of the effect of specimen overhang, nonlinearity, and characteristics of five-point and three-point flexure tests.
