Suppressed electric quadrupole collectivity in 49 Ti

Single-step Coulomb excitation of 46,48,49,50 Ti is presented. A complete set of E2 matrix elements for the quintuplet of states in 49 Ti, centred on the core excitation, was measured for the first time. A total of nine E2 matrix elements are reported, four of which were previously unknown. $^{49}_{22}$Ti 27 shows a 20% quenching in electric quadrupole transition strength as compared to its semi-magic $^{50}_{22}$Ti 28 neighbour. This 20% quenching, while empirically unprecedented, can be explained with a remarkably simple two-state mixing model, which is also consistent with other ground-state properties such as the magnetic dipole moment and electric quadrupole moment. A connection to nucleon transfer data and the quenching of single-particle strength is also demonstrated. The simplicity of the 49 Ti- 50 Ti pair (i.e., approximate single-j 0 7/2 valence space and isolation of yrast states from non-yrast states) provides a unique opportunity to disentangle otherwise competing effects in the ground-state properties of atomic nuclei, the emergence of collectivity, and the role of proton-neutron interactions.

Microsecond Isomer at the N = 20 Island of Shape Inversion Observed at FRIB

Excited-state spectroscopy from the first experiment at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is reported. A 24(2)-μs isomer was observed with the FRIB Decay Station initiator (FDSi) through a cascade of 224- and 401-keV γ rays in coincidence with 32 Na nuclei. This is the only known microsecond isomer (1 μs ≤T 1/2 <1 ms) in the region. This nucleus is at the heart of the N=20 island of shape inversion and is at the crossroads of the spherical shell-model, deformed shell-model, and ab initio theories. It can be represented as the coupling of a proton hole and neutron particle to 32 Mg, 32 Mg+π -1 +ν +1 . This odd-odd coupling and isomer formation provides a sensitive measure of the underlying shape degrees of freedom of 32 Mg, where the onset of spherical-to-deformed shape inversion begins with a low-lying deformed 2 + state at 885 keV and a low-lying shape-coexisting 0$^+_2$ state at 1058 keV. Here, we suggest two possible explanations for the 625-keV isomer in 32 Na: a 6 - spherical shape isomer that decays by E2 or a 0 + deformed spin isomer that decays by M2. The present results and calculations are most consistent with the latter, indicating that the low-lying states are dominated by deformation.

New collective structures in Au 179 and their implications for the triaxial deformation of the Pt 178 core

The extremely neutron-deficient isotope 179 Au has been studied by a combination of in-beam γ-ray and isomeric-decay spectroscopy. For in-beam spectroscopy, the recoil-isomer tagging technique was employed, using the known 3/2 – , T 1/2 = 328 ns isomer. A new rotational band, associated with the unfavored signature band of the 1⁢ℎ 9/2 ⊕2f⁢ 7/2 proton-intruder configuration, was revealed. A previously unknown, high-spin isomeric state with an excitation energy of 1743(17) keV and T 1/2 = 2.16⁢(8) ⁢µs was discovered. Five decay paths were identified, some of them feeding previously unknown non-yrast excited states, associated with the 1⁢i 13/2 proton-intruder configuration. Calculations based on the particle-plus-triaxial-rotor model were performed to interpret the data. On the basis of these calculations, the new 1⁢ℎ 9/2 ⊕2f 7/2 rotational band is interpreted as due to triaxial deformation of the underlying configuration with β 2 ≈ 0.26 and γ ≈ 27°. In conclusion, observed non-yrast states of the positive-parity 1i 13/2 intruder configuration are interpreted as due to triaxial deformation with β 2 ≈ 0.26 and γ ≈ 20°.

E2 rotational invariants of 0$^{+}_{1}$ and 2$^{+}_{1}$ states for 106 Cd: The emergence of collective rotation

The collective structure of 106 Cd is elucidated by multi-step Coulomb excitation of a 3.849 MeV/A beam of 106 Cd on a 1.1 mg/cm 2 208 Pb target using GRETINA-CHICO2 at ATLAS. Fourteen E2 matrix elements were obtained. The nucleus 106 Cd is a prime example of emergent collectivity that possesses a simple structure: it is free of complexity caused by shape coexistence and has a small, but collectively active number of valence nucleons. This work follows in a long and currently active quest to answer the fundamental question of the origin of nuclear collectivity and deformation, notably in the cadmium isotopes. The results are discussed in terms of phenomenological models, the shell model, and Kumar-Cline sums of E2 matrix elements. The < 0$^{+}_{2}$ ||E2||2$^{+}_{1}$ > matrix element is determined for the first time, providing a total, converged measure of the electric quadrupole strength, < Q 2 >, of the first-excited 2$^{+}_{1}$ level relative to the 0$^{+}_{1}$ ground state, which does not show an increase as expected of harmonic and anharmonic vibrations. Strong evidence for triaxial shapes in weakly collective nuclei is indicated; collective vibrations are excluded. This is contrary to the only other cadmium result of this kind in 114 Cd by C. Fahlander et al., Nucl. Phys. A485, 327 (1988), which is complicated by low-lying shape coexistence near midshell.

First candidates for $γ$ vibrational bands built on the [ 505 ] 11 / 2 - neutron orbital in odd- A Dy isotopes

In this work, rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the Gd 155 ( α , 2 n ) Dy 157 and Nd 148 ( C 12 , 5 n ) Dy 155 reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high- K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a K π = 2 + γ vibrational band, built on the [ 505 ] 11 / 2 - neutron orbital, in both odd- A Dy 155 , 157 isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K = 0 + states or the so-called β vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in Dy 154 and Dy 156 to the [ 505 ] 11 / 2 - orbital, to produce a K π = 11 / 2 - band, was not observed in both Dy 155 and Dy 157 , respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0 + states in the core nuclei Dy 154 and Dy 156 are also discussed.

The OSIRIS-REx Spacecraft and the Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM)

The Origins, Spectral-Interpretation, Resource-Identification, Security and Regolith- Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft supports all aspects of the mission science objectives, from extensive remote sensing at the asteroid Bennu, to sample collection and return to Earth. In general, the success of planetary missions requires the collection, return, and analysis of data, which in turn depends on the successful operation of instruments and the host spacecraft. In the case of OSIRIS-REx, a sample-return mission, the spacecraft must also support the acquisition, safe stowage, and return of the sample. The target asteroid is Bennu, a B-class near-Earth asteroid roughly 500 m diameter. The Lockheed Martin-designed and developed OSIRIS-REx spacecraft draws significant heritage from previous missions and features the Touch-and-Go-Sample-Acquisition-Mechanism, or TAGSAM, to collect sample from the surface of Bennu. Lockheed Martin developed TAGSAM as a novel, simple way to collect samples on planetary bodies. During short contact with the asteroid surface, TAGSAM releases curation-grade nitrogen gas, mobilizing the surface regolith into a collection chamber. The contact surface of TAGSAM includes "contact pads", which are present to collect surface grains that have been subject to space weathering. Extensive 1-g laboratory testing, "reduced-gravity" testing (via parabolic flights on an airplane), and analysis demonstrate that TAGSAM will collect asteroid material in nominal conditions, and a variety of off-nominal conditions, such as the presence of large obstacles under the TAGSAM sampling head, or failure in the sampling gas firing. TAGSAM, and the spacecraft support of the instruments, are central to the success of the mission.
