The Infrared-Optical Telescope (IRT) of the Exist Observatory

The IRT is a 1.1m visible and infrared passively cooled telescope, which can locate, identify and obtain spectra of GRB afterglows at redshifts up to z 20. It will also acquire optical-IR, imaging and spectroscopy of AGN and transients discovered by the EXIST (The Energetic X-ray Imaging Survey Telescope). The IRT imaging and spectroscopic capabilities cover a broad spectral range from 0.32.2m in four bands. The identical fields of view in the four instrument bands are each split in three subfields: imaging, objective prism slitless for the field and objective prism single object slit low resolution spectroscopy, and high resolution long slit on single object. This allows the instrument, to do simultaneous broadband photometry or spectroscopy of the same object over the full spectral range, thus greatly improving the efficiency of the observatory and its detection limits. A prompt follow up (within three minutes) of the transient discovered by the EXIST makes IRT a unique tool for detection and study of these events, which is particularly valuable at wavelengths unavailable to the ground based observatories.

New Worlds Observer Telescope and Instrument Optical Design Concepts

Optical design concepts for the telescope and instrumentation for NASA s New Worlds Observer program are presented. A four-meter multiple channel telescope is discussed, as well as a suite of science instrument concepts. Wide field instrumentation (imager and spectrograph) would be accommodated by a three-mirror-anastigmat telescope design. Planet finding and characterization, and a UV instrument would use a separate channel that is picked off after the first two mirrors (primary and secondary). Guiding concepts are also discussed.

Technical Aspects of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph Repair (STIS-R)

In August 2004, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) ceased operation, due to a failure in the Side 2 Low Voltage Power Supply (LVPS2). The LVPS2 provided power to the entire instrument, including all detectors and mechanisms. The failure precluded movement of any STIS mechanism, leaving the instrument fully shuttered. The fault analysis team concluded that by replacing a board containing a new LVPS2 power supply, STIS could be brought back to full functionality. During Servicing Mission 4 (SM4), STIS-R will replace this board. STIS-R will restore full function of the instrument with one of the two redundant sides of the instrument.

The Asymmetric, Dual-Michelson Wavefront Corrector: High Precision Correction of Amplitude and Phase for Coronagraphy

To detect extra-solar planets by coronography will require unprecedented levels of wavefront correction of both phase and amplitude. To achieve this, we propose a dual Michelson interferometer arrangement, incorporating two deformable mirrors (DM) and a third, fixed mirror (all at pupils) and two beamsplitters: one with unequal (asymmetric) beam splitting and one with symmetric beamsplitting. This design allows high precision correction of phase and amplitude using DMs with relatively coarse steps and is relatively insensitive to small changes in the DMs. We are constructing such an apparatus incorporating two MEMS devices and will report on features of the design and performance.

High Precision Measurements of Mirror Coating Non-Uniformities and Implications for Coronagraphy

High contrast, coronagraphic imaging systems, such as proposed for the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) mission, require very high levels of wavefront phase and amplitude uniformity (of order 10(exp -4) in order to reveal faint terrestrial planets in orbit near their parent stars. Knowledge of amplitude non-uniformities with large optical systems to this level and essentially unknown. We have bui1t an instrument to provide such measurements on a few selected coatings using surrogate witness samples configured to approximate a large diameter mirror and provide some initial data at the precision required. Here we present the results of this work to date, and show the imp1ications for high contrast coronagraphy.

Results From Cs Activated GaN Photocathode Development for MCP Detector Systems at GSFC

We describe the development of high quantum efficiency W photocathodes for use in large area two dimensional microchannel plate based detector arrays to enable new W space astronomy missions. Future W missions will require improvements in detector sensitivity, which has the most leverage for cost-effective improvements in overall telescope/instrument sensitivity. We use new materials such as p-doped GaN, AIGaN, ZnMgO, Sic and diamond. We have currently obtained QE values > 40 % at 185 nm with Cesiated GaN, and hope to demonstrate higher values in the future. By using controlled internal fields and nano-structuring of the surfaces, we plan to provide field emission assistance for photoelectrons while maintaining their energy distinction from dark noise electrons. We will transfer these methods from GaN to ZnMgO, a new family of wide band-gap materials more compatible with microchannel plates. We also are exploring technical parameters such as doping profiles, internal and external field strengths, angle of incidence, field emission assistance, surface preparation, etc.

Circumstellar jets and disk of DL Tau and CW Tau observed with HST/STIS and the GSFC Fabry-Perot imager

The pre-main sequence T Tauri stars DL Tau and CW Tau were observed with Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) and the Goddard Fabry-Perot Imager at the Apache Point 3.5-m telescope in their coronagraphic modes. The STIS observation of DL Tau shows a circumstellar disk with a dark ring, and the jet with structure along the length, and a faint counter-jet. On CW Tau, STIS shows a jet with a bright blob about 4 arcsec away, and the Fabry-Perot shows the jet extended in both directions in [SII] to 60 and 90 arcsec from the star.

The Space Telescope imaging spectrograph 2048 CCD and its characteristics

Development of a 2048-squared CCD for a second-generation Space Telescope instrument has produced some very encouraging devices. The first experimental lot of 10 devices have very few defects, dark currents of less than 40 electrons/pixel/hour at -80 C, readout noise levels of less than 4 electrons rms and excellent charge transfer efficiency at signal levels of less than 10 electrons.

Energetic Phenomena on the Sun: The Solar Maximum Mission Flare Workshop. Proceedings

The general objectives of the conference were as follows: (1) Synthesize flare studies after three years of Solar Maximum Mission (SSM) data analysis. Encourage a broader participation in the SMM data analysis and combine this more fully with theory and other data sources-data obtained with other spacecraft such as the HINOTORI, p78-1, and ISEE-3 spacecrafts, and with the Very Large Array (VLA) and many other ground-based instruments. Many coordinated data sets, unprecedented in their breadth of coverage and multiplicity of sources, had been obtained within the structure of the Solar Maximum Year (SMY). (2) Stimulate joint studies, and publication in the general scientific literature. The intended primary benefit was for informal collaborations to be started or broadened at the Workshops with subsequent publications. (3) Provide a special publication resulting from the Workshop.
