Review of electrical and thermal properties of carbon and graphite

Some of the electrical and thermal properties of ordered and partially ordered carbons are reviewed. Earlier and current research areas are discussed relative to electrical properties of pyrolytic and polycrystalline graphite; thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties of graphitizable and glassy carbon with heat treatment temperatures in the range 600-2500 C; Josephson junction-like and switching behavior in carbon films; and some high-conductivity and superconducting compounds made from carbon. Due to the newness and complexity of many of the areas examined, the results are not always completely understood, nor have these areas been completely investigated experimentally. Suggestions for future research are made.

Hall effect magnetometer

A magnetometer which uses a single crystal of bismuth selenide is described. The rhombohedral crystal structure of the sensing element is analyzed. The method of construction of the magnetometer is discussed. It is stated that the sensing crystal has a positive or negative Hall coefficient and a carrier concentration of about 10 to the 18th power to 10 to the 20th power per cubic centimeter.

Quantum limit studies in single-crystal and pyrolytic graphite

The occupied regions of momentum space in graphite are confined to very elongated volumes near the hexagonal Brillouin zone edges. The elongation is along the hexagonal axis (c axis) so that cross-sectional areas perpendicular to that axis are very small. Hence, when magnetic fields are applied parallel to the c axis only the n = 0 Landau levels remain below the Fermi energy for fields above 7 T (Woollam, 1971). The energy bands in graphite can be described by a set of seven parameters (McClure, 1971) (including the Fermi energy as a parameter). In a quantizing magnetic field the Landau levels are described by a secular equation determined by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian (McClure, 1960). A major unusual feature for the levels along the Brillouin zone edge is that the n = 0 Landau level for electrons is independent of magnetic field, while that for holes is field dependent.

High field superconductivity in alkali metal intercalates of MoS2

In the search for better high temperature, high critical field superconductors, a class of materials was found which have layered structures and can be intercalated with various elements and compounds. Since a large number of compounds can be formed, intercalation provides a method of control of superconducting properties. They also provide the possible medium for excitonic superconductivity. Results of magnetic field studies are presented on alkali metal (Na, K, Rb, and Cs) intercalated MoS2 (2H polymorph).

Magnetic field effects on superconductivity in alkali metal intercalates of MoS2

The effects of a magnetic field on the superconducting transition in MoS2 intercalated with potassium and sodium were studied. It was found that the potassium intercalated MoS2 has better properties in a magnetic field. In zero magnetic field the transition to superconductivity begins near 6.4 K. Diagrams of the basic circuitry for superconducting transition studies, and charts showing critical magnetic field versus critical temperature for the intercalated MoS2 are included.

Magnetism, dimensional changes, and magnetic transitions in hydrated cesium manganese chloride

Dimensional changes (strain) along the three principal crystal axes of the antiferromagnet CsMnCl3-2H2O are studied as a function of magnetic field and temperature in the antiferromagnetic, spin flopped, and paramagnetic phases. Changes in dimensions through the phase transitions between the magnetic states are examined. By applying the molecular field model and utilizing all available information, magnetic properties of CsMnCl3-2H2O are determined. The possible usefulness of this material in a magnetic refrigeration cycle is evaluated.

Minority carriers in graphite.

Quantum oscillations as a function of magnetic field in the Hall effect and thermoelectric power are studied in two samples of pressure-annealed pyrolytic graphite. Only the oscillations originating from minority-Fermi-surface carriers are discussed. Frequencies of the de Haas-van Alphen type are measured over a wide range of angles between the magnetic field and the c axis of the Brillouin zone. Results are given graphically and analyzed.

Graphite minority carriers.

It is demonstrated that there are (at least) two sets of minority carriers in graphite, which are essentially the same for both natural single crystals and for pyrolytic samples. Both materials have similar minority carrier de Haas-van Alphen periods as a function of the angle between the C axis and the magnetic field.
