Mechanism of Chalcophanite Nucleation in Zinc Hydroxide Sulfate Cathodes in Aqueous Zinc Batteries

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries with MnO 2 -based cathodes have seen significant attention owing to their high theoretical capacities, safety, and low cost; however, much debate remains regarding the reaction mechanism that dominates energy storage. In this work, we report our electron microscopy study of cathodes containing zinc hydroxide sulfate (Zn 4 SO 4 (OH) 6 ·xH 2 O, ZHS) together with carbon nanotubes cycled in electrolytes containing ZnSO 4 with varied amounts of MnSO 4 incorporated. The primary Mn-containing phase is formed in situ in the cathode during cycling, where a dissolution-deposition reaction is identified between ZHS and chalcophanite (ZnMn 3 O 7 ·3H 2 O). Mechanistic details of this reaction, in which the chalcophanite nucleates then separates from the ZHS flakes as the ZHS dissolves while acting as the primary Zn source for the reaction, are revealed using surface sensitive methods. Importantly, these findings indicate the reaction is local to the ZHS flakes, providing new insight toward the importance of ZHS and the cathode microstructure.

Potassium-Containing α-MnO 2 Nanotubes: The Impact of Hollow Regions on Electrochemistry

α-MnO 2 type materials have been studied as electrode materials in rechargeable batteries and electrocatalysts due to their 2 × 2 tunneled crystal structures capable of accommodating cations and their tunable physiochemical properties. In this study, we deliberately synthesized K + containing α-MnO 2 (K 0.9 Mn 8 O 16 ) hollow nanotubes varying the dimensions of the hollow regions and level of surface defects. The K 0.9 Mn 8 O 16 nanotube material samples have similar crystallinity, thermal stability, and average Mn oxidation state. Oxygen surface defects in the hollow regions were revealed through detailed studies using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The impact of the hollow regions and associated surface defects on the electrochemistry of K x Mn 8 O 16 were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, and galvanostatic cycling. The K 0.9 Mn 8 O 16 nanotubes with a large hollow region (~30 nm) and higher level of surface defects show higher apparent lithium ion diffusion coefficients and lower polarization compared to the nanotubes with a small hollow region (~10 nm). In-situ lithiation demonstrated that the dimensions of the nanotube walls expanded, but the hollow region did not change in size as result of lithiation. Furthermore, this research demonstrates that tuning particle architecture and surface defects can positively impact functional behavior of electrochemical storage materials.

Toward the Understanding of the Reaction Mechanism of Zn/MnO2 Batteries Using Non-alkaline Aqueous Electrolytes

Zn/MnO 2 systems using non-alkaline aqueous electrolytes have attracted tremendous interest as rechargeable aqueous Zn ion batteries due to their safety and high specific capacities. Despite their promising electrochemical performance, however, their reaction mechanism has remained elusive. Here in this paper, we examined the structural evolution of cryptomelane α-MnO 2 cathode by ex situ transmission electron microscopy after electrochemical testing using two different non-alkaline aqueous Zn electrolytes with acetate and triflate salts of different pH values. We have discovered that the systems tested in both electrolytes exhibit a dissolution–deposition reaction mechanism through dissolution–deposition of Mn 2+ ions from/on the cathodes with a display of similar discharge/charge product formation. We have also found that the cell tested using the acetate electrolyte shows evidence of structural irreversibility that might contribute to its rapid capacity degradation. This finding offers an important insight into optimizing the cathode design for enhanced electrochemical function of aqueous Zn/MnO 2 batteries.
