Cu-Doped Iron Oxide for the Efficient Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction Reaction

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) is a promising alternative synthetic route for sustainable ammonia (NH 3 ) production, because it not only eliminates nitrate (NO 3 – ) from water but also produces NH 3 under mild operating conditions. However, owing to the complicated eight-electron reaction and the competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction, developing catalysts with high activities and Faradaic efficiencies (FEs) is highly imperative to improve the reaction performance. In this study, Cu-doped Fe 3 O 4 flakes are fabricated and demonstrated to be excellent catalysts for electrochemical conversion of NO 3 – to NH 3 , with a maximum FE of ~100% and an NH 3 yield of 179.55 ± 16.37 mg h –1 mg cat –1 at –0.6 V vs RHE. Here, theoretical calculations reveal that doping the catalyst surface with Cu results in a more thermodynamically facile reaction. These results highlight the feasibility of promoting the NO 3 RR activity using heteroatom doping strategies.

Atomically dispersed Pt and Fe sites and Pt–Fe nanoparticles for durable proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity without emissions. The high cost and low durability of Pt-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction hinder their wide application, and the development of non-precious metal electrocatalysts is limited by their low performance. Here we design a hybrid electrocatalyst that consists of atomically dispersed Pt and Fe single atoms and Pt–Fe alloy nanoparticles. Its Pt mass activity is 3.7 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C in a fuel cell. More importantly, the fuel cell with a low Pt loading in the cathode (0.015 mg Pt cm –2 ) shows an excellent durability, with a 97% activity retention after 100,000 cycles and no noticeable current drop at 0.6 V for over 200 hours. These results highlight the importance of the synergistic effects among active sites in hybrid electrocatalysts and provide an alternative way to design more active and durable low-Pt electrocatalysts for electrochemical devices.

A general strategy for preparing pyrrolic-N 4 type single-atom catalysts via pre-located isolated atoms

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been applied in many fields due to their superior catalytic performance. Because of the unique properties of the single-atom-site, using the single atoms as catalysts to synthesize SACs is promising. In this work, we have successfully achieved Co 1 SAC using Pt 1 atoms as catalysts. More importantly, this synthesis strategy can be extended to achieve Fe and Ni SACs as well. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) results demonstrate that the achieved Fe, Co, and Ni SACs are in a M1-pyrrolic N 4 (M= Fe, Co, and Ni) structure. Density functional theory (DFT) studies show that the Co(Cp) 2 dissociation is enhanced by Pt 1 atoms, thus leading to the formation of Co 1 atoms instead of nanoparticles. These SACs are also evaluated under hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and the nature of active sites under HER are unveiled by the operando XAS studies. These new findings extend the application fields of SACs to catalytic fabrication methodology, which is promising for the rational design of advanced SACs.

Doping-modulated strain control of bifunctional electrocatalysis for rechargeable zinc–air batteries

Changes in the local atomic arrangement in a crystal caused by lattice-mismatch-induced strain can efficiently regulate the performance of electrocatalysts for zinc–air batteries (ZABs) in many manners, mainly due to modulated electronic structure configurations that affect the adsorption energies for oxygen-intermediates formed during oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER). However, the application of strain engineering in electrocatalysis has been limited by the strain relaxation caused by structural instability such as dissolution and destruction, leading to insufficient durability towards the ORR/OER. In this work, we propose a doping strategy to modulate the phase transition and formation of self-supported cobalt fluoride–sulfide (CoFS) nanoporous films using a low amount of copper (Cu) as a dopant. This well-defined Cu–CoFS heterostructure overcomes the obstacle of structural instability. Our study of the proposed Cu–CoFS also helps establish the structure–property relationship of strained electrocatalysts by unraveling the role of local strain in regulating the electronic structure of the catalyst. As a proof-of-concept, the Cu–CoFS electrocatalyst with doping-modulated strain exhibited superior onset potentials of 0.91 V and 1.49 V for the ORR and OER, respectively, surpassing commercial Pt/C@RuO 2 and benchmarking non-platinum group metal (non-PGM) catalysts. ZABs with the Cu–CoFS catalyst delivered excellent charge/discharge cycling performance with an extremely low voltage gap of 0.5 V at a current density of 10 mA cm –2 and successively 0.93 V at a high current density of 100 mA cm –2 and afforded an outstanding peak power density of 255 mW cm –2 .

Ultrahigh Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity Achieved Using Ir Single Atoms on Amorphous CoO x Nanosheets

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important for renewable energy storage. Here, we design high-density Ir single-atom catalysts supported by CoO x amorphous nanosheets (ANSs) for the OER. Experimental results show that Ir single atoms are anchored by abundant surface-absorbed O in CoO x ANSs. Ir single-atom catalysts possess ultrahigh mass activity that is 160-fold of commercial IrO 2 . The OER of IrCoO x ANSs reached a record low onset overpotential of less than 30 mV. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that Ir-O-Co pairs directly boosted the OER efficiency and enhanced the Ir stability.
