Excellent performance of 650 MHz single-cell niobium cavity after electropolishing

Electropolishing process and cathodes have undergone modification and optimization for both low- and high-beta 650 MHz five-cell niobium cavities for PIP-II. Cavities treated with these modified electropolishing conditions exhibited smooth surfaces and good performance in baseline tests. Nonetheless, due to administrative constraints on project cavities, maximum gradient performance testing was not conducted. This paper presents a study conducted on a single-cell 650 MHz cavity utilizing the optimized electropolishing conditions, highlighting the maximum performance attained for this specific cavity. The cavity tested at 2 K in a vertical cryostat reached a superior accelerating field gradient of 53.3 MV/m at Q0 of 1.6x1010, which is the highest gradient attained for this type of large-sized cavities.

Study of Mechanical Grinding Effects on Niobium Surface

Mechanical grinding is commonly employed to eliminate surface defects such as scratches and pits from niobium cavity surfaces or sheets before cavity fabrication. Subsequently, chemically buffered polishing or electropolishing is often utilized to completely remove residues of the polishing media and any defects induced by mechanical grinding, ensuring a pristine surface. In this study, we conducted a systematic investigation to assess the influence of mechanical grinding using silicon carbide (SiC) and aluminium oxide (Al2O3) polishing media on niobium surfaces. Additionally, the study examines the effects of post-mechanical grinding chemical treatments on surface quality.

Successful Cleanroom Installation of PIP-II SSR2 Coupler Using Robotic Arm

The Fermilab Side-Coupled Linac accelerates H- beam from 116 MeV to 400 MeV through seven 805 MHz modules. Twelve wire scanners are present in the Side Coupled Linac and four are present in the transfer line between the Linac and the Booster synchrotron ring. These wire scanners act as important diagnostic instruments to directly collect information on the beam s transverse distribution. The manipulation of the conditions of wire scanner data collection enables further characterization of the beamline, such as calculating emittance and the Twiss parameters of the beam at select regions. Here we present the results of these studies and characterization of the non-Gaussian transverse beam distribution observed.

Transfer of EP and Doping Technology for PIP-II HB650 Cavities from Fermilab to Industry

Fermilab has optimized the surface processing conditions for PIP-II high beta 650 MHz cavities. This encompasses conditions for bulk electropolishing, heat treatment, nitrogen doping, post-doping final electropolishing, and post-processing surface rinsing. The technology has been effectively transitioned to industry. This paper highlights the efforts made to fine-tune the process and to smoothly share them with the partner labs and an associated vendor.

Impact of Solenoid Induced Residual Magnetic Fields on The Prototype SSR1 CM Performance

A prototype cryomodule containing eight Single Spoke Resonators type-1 (SSR1) operating at 325 MHz and four superconducting focusing lenses was successfully assembled, cold tested, and accelerated beam in the framework of the PIP-II project at Fermilab. The impact of induced residual magnetic fields from the solenoids on performance of cavities is presented in this contribution. In addition, design optimizations for the production cryomodules as a result of this impact are highlighted.

Low Particulates Nitrogen Purge and Backfill During pHB650 Cryomodule String Assembly

A low particulate vacuum and purging system was developed to support PIP-II cryomodule string assembly. The overpressure can be controlled at a precision of 1 mbar above the atmospheric pressure regardless of the cavity or string assembly air volume. The system minimized the risk of uncontrolled nitrogen flow during the string assembly. Design features are presented.

The Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of LB650 cavities

The PIP-II project’s LB650 cavities could potentially be vulnerable to mechanical deformation because of the geometric shape of the cavity due to reduced beta. The mechanical property of the niobium half-cell was measured following various heat treatments. The 5-cell cavities were tested in a controlled drop test fashion and the real-world road test. The result showed that the 900 C heat treatment was compatible with cavity handling and transportation during production. The test provides the bases of the transportation specification and shipping container design guidelines.

Fundamental R&D for high-Q0 650 MHz SRF cavities for hadron linacs

Upcoming projects requiring high-Q0 ~650 MHz elliptical cavities, such as MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams’ energy upgrade and Fermilab’s PIP-II, drive a need to better understand RF losses due to magnetic flux. With sample sets from two different Niobium vendors, we explore the efficacy of the fast-cooldown method, and high- temperature annealing in promoting flux expulsion. Additionally, we report the results of vertical tests comparing the effect of electropolishing and furnace baking treatments on the cavity flux sensitivity. We also directly measure the flux pinning force in niobium samples, and correlate it with different heat treatments, and flux expulsion performance.

Visual, Optical and Replica Inspections: Surface Preparation of 650 MHz NB Cavity for PIP-II Linac

Surface preparation of niobium superconducting RF cavities is a critical step for achieving good RF performance under the superconducting state. Surface defect, roughness, and contamination affect the accelerating gradient and quality factor of the cavities. We report surface inspection methods used to control the surface processing of 650 MHz cavities designated for the pre-production and prototype cryomodules for PIP-II linac. The cavity surface was routinely inspected visually, with an optical camera, and by microscopic scanning of surface replicas. This article covers details on the surface inspection methods and surface polishing process used to repair the surface.

Electropolishing Study on Nitrogen-doped Niobium Surface

The nitrogen doping (N-doping) process is applied to niobium (Nb) superconducting cavities to enhance their quality factors. The N-doping is followed by an electropolishing process that provides the final surface of the cavities. A controlled EP process is necessary to get the benefit of N-doping and achieve a high accelerating gradient. We have performed electropolishing of N-doped Nb surface under various conditions to understand their impact on the surface. A modified EP process was developed to obtain a smooth pit-free surface.
