Atomically Dispersed Single Ni Site Catalysts for Nitrogen Reduction toward Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis Using N 2 and H 2 O

Ammonia (NH 3 ) electrosynthesis gains significant attention as NH 3 is essentially important for fertilizer production and fuel utilization. However, electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) remains a great challenge because of low activity and poor selectivity. Herein, a new class of atomically dispersed Ni site electrocatalyst is reported, which exhibits the optimal NH 3 yield of 115 µg cm -2 h -1 at –0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under neutral conditions. High faradic efficiency of 21 ± 1.9% is achieved at -0.2 V versus RHE under alkaline conditions, although the ammonia yield is lower. The Ni sites are stabilized with nitrogen, which is verified by advanced X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Density functional theory calculations provide insightful understanding on the possible structure of active sites, relevant reaction pathways, and confirm that the Ni-N 3 sites are responsible for the experimentally observed activity and selectivity. Extensive controls strongly suggest that the atomically dispersed NiN 3 site-rich catalyst provides more intrinsically active sites than those in N-doped carbon, instead of possible environmental contamination. Overall, this work further indicates that single-metal site catalysts with optimal nitrogen coordination is very promising for NRR and indeed improves the scaling relationship of transition metals.

Boosting CO 2 reduction on Fe-N-C with sulfur incorporation: Synergistic electronic and structural engineering

Developing earth-abundant efficient catalysts for CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is of paramount importance for electrochemical conversion of CO 2 into value-added products. Despite numerous studies on iron and nitrogen codoped carbon (Fe-N-C) catalysts, grand challenges exist due to limited performance and understanding of catalytic mechanisms. This study reports a general strategy to boost electrocatalytic CO 2 RR activity of Fe-N-C with the incorporation of S atoms to engineer carbon support structure and electronic properties of active Fe-N sites simultaneously via a copolymer-assisted synthetic approach. The employment of N,S comonomers significantly increases the numbers of micropores and surface area, enabling dense atomic Fe-N and enhanced utilization efficiency. We report the first-principles calculations reveal that S modulation upraises the Fermi energy of Fe 3d and increases charge density on Fe atoms of Fe-N 4 , thereby enhancing intrinsic catalytic reactivity and selectivity for CO 2 reduction by strengthening the binding interaction between the Fe site and key COOH* intermediate. These integrated structural and electronic merits endow Fe-NS-C with outstanding activity (e.g., CO Faradaic efficiency of 98% at an overpotential of 490 mV) and stability (without deactivation in 30 h), ranking it one of the most active Fe-N-C reported to date. The finding offers an innovative design strategy to enable the design of advanced catalysts for CO 2 conversion.

An intracloud lightning parameterization scheme for a storm electrification model

The parameterization of an intracloud lightning discharge has been implemented in the present storm electrification model. The initiation, propagation direction, and termination of the discharge are computed using the magnitude and direction of the electric field vector as the determining criteria. The charge redistribution due to the lightning is approximated assuming the channel to be an isolated conductor with zero net charge over its entire length. Various simulations involving differing amounts of charge transferred and distribution of charges have been done. Values of charge transfer, dipole moment change, and electrical energy dissipation computed in the model are consistent with observations. The effects of the lightning-produced ions on the hydrometeor charges and electric field components depend strongly on the amount of charge transferred. A comparison between the measured electric field change of an actual intracloud flash and the field change due to the simulated discharge shows favorable agreement. Limitations of the parameterization scheme are discussed.
