Experimental and theoretical study of weakly coherent mode in I-mode edge plasmas in the EAST tokamak

The I-mode is a promising operation mode for fusion in the future, featuring high-temperature and low-density confinement, but the reason why the temperature and density are decoupled remains an important aspect to be explored. The experimental results from the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) showed that the weakly coherent mode (WCM) is directly related to sustaining the I-mode and that the peak amplitude of the WCM is proportional to the temperature in the pedestal. Here, simulating the experimental data from EAST with the six-field model of BOUT++, we find a density perturbation close to the frequency of the WCM observed in the experiment. By testing all the physical terms in this model, we find that the density perturbation and particle transport are directly related to the drift Alfvén wave (DAW) mode. Additionally we use the SymPIC program (Xiao et al Plasma Sci. Technol. 20 110501; Phys. Plasmas 22 112504; Plasma Sci. Technol. 23 055102) to simulate the same experimental data and find that the frequency range of the WCM is close to both experimental and BOUT++ results. Therefore, the WCM of the I-mode can be considered to be driven by the DAW, which helps improve the transport of the I-mode.

Physical mechanisms for the transition from type-III to large ELMs induced by impurity injection on EAST

Transition from type-III to large-amplitude ELMs induced by neon injection has been observed in the EAST tokamak at overlapping q 95 space between large and small ELMs. With neon injection, pedestal density gradient shows a remarkable increase accompanied by some decrease of pedestal electron temperature, and consequently the pressure gradient increases moderately and edge bootstrap current has minimal change. Further experiment demonstrates that the occurrence of large ELMs after neon injection is highly correlated with the change in edge density. Linear peeling-ballooning stability analysis indicates that the large ELM case is more unstable than the type-III ELM case during the ELM transition. A scan of pedestal density gradient in linear stability analysis shows that the direct destabilizing effect of steep pedestal density gradient on peeling-ballooning instabilities via two-fluid effects could also facilitate the transition to large ELMs. In conclusion, these results could provide more insight into the role of pedestal density gradient on pedestal stability and ELM behavior.

Why do planetary wave number one and the ozone transport vary annually in the Northern Hemisphere and semiannually in the Southern Hemisphere

Evidence is cited from these studies and those of others showing the different nature of the yearly variations of the middle atmospheres of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Northern Hemisphere middle atmosphere is shown to be characterized by annual variations in planetary wave number one amplitude and the accompanying ozone transports. The Southern Hemisphere middle atmosphere is shown to be characterized by semiannual variations in the amplitude of planetary wave number one and the accompanying ozone transports. The amplitude of wave number two in both hemispheres appears to vary annually. Examination is made of the nature of the planetary wave forcing in both hemispheres as well as the planetary wave propagation characteristics in both hemispheres in an attempt to better understand this.

Global atmospheric circulation statistics: Four year averages

Four year averages of the monthly mean global structure of the general circulation of the atmosphere are presented in the form of latitude-altitude, time-altitude, and time-latitude cross sections. The numerical values are given in tables. Basic parameters utilized include daily global maps of temperature and geopotential height for 18 pressure levels between 1000 and 0.4 mb for the period December 1, 1978 through November 30, 1982 supplied by NOAA/NMC. Geopotential heights and geostrophic winds are constructed using hydrostatic and geostrophic formulae. Meridional and vertical velocities are calculated using thermodynamic and continuity equations. Fields presented in this report are zonally averaged temperature, zonal, meridional, and vertical winds, and amplitude of the planetary waves in geopotential height with zonal wave numbers 1-3. The northward fluxes of sensible heat and eastward momentum by the standing and transient eddies along with their wavenumber decomposition and Eliassen-Palm flux propagation vectors and divergences by the standing and transient eddies along with their wavenumber decomposition are also given. Large interhemispheric differences and year-to-year variations are found to originate in the changes in the planetary wave activity.

Troposphere-stratosphere (surface-55 km) monthly general circulation statistics for the Northern Hemisphere-four year averages

This report presents four year averages of monthly mean Northern Hemisphere general circulation statistics for the period from 1 December 1978 through 30 November 1982. Computations start with daily maps of temperature for 18 pressure levels between 1000 and 0.4 mb that were supplied by NOAA/NMC. Geopotential height and geostrophic wind are constructed using the hydrostatic and geostrophic formulae. Fields presented in this report are zonally averaged temperature, mean zonal wind, and amplitude and phase of the planetary waves in geopotential height with zonal wavenumbers 1-3. The northward fluxes of heat and eastward momentum by the standing and transient eddies along with their wavenumber decomposition and Eliassen-Palm flux propagation vectors and divergences by the standing and transient eddies along with their wavenumber decomposition are also given. Large annual and interannual variations are found in each quantity especially in the stratosphere in accordance with the changes in the planetary wave activity. The results are shown both in graphic and tabular form.

Analysis of GASP carbon monoxide data

Atmospheric carbon monoxide in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere for the period March 1977 through October 1978 was analyzed. The CO data are summarized and the distribution and variations in space and time of this gas are presented. The data show that the CO mixing ratios are higher in the troposphere than those in the stratosphere. In the Northern Hemisphere the highest value of CO mixing ratio occurs in spring, although more data are needed to verify these findings. Correlation coefficients among CO, O3, air temperature (T) and winds were calculated for different regions under different seasons. It was found that the CO correlates negatively with O3 above 20 degrees latitude and positively below that latitude. Case studies using the data of CO, O3, and T measured simultaneously were performed. Discussions and suggestions are made. Ozone data on seasonal basis is also summarized.
