Highly efficient separation membrane based on cellulose acetate/chitosan fibrous composite substrate with activated carbon functional adsorption layer

Abstract BACKGROUND For improving the permeability and selectivity of adsorption separation membranes, membrane materials, structural morphology and separation technology must continue to be investigated. Development of a membrane that is environmentally friendly, cost‐effective and with high filter precision is an important direction in current research. RESULTS The air pressure spraying method was used to prepare an activated carbon (AC)–cellulose acetate/chitosan (CA/CS) composite membrane. The CA/CS fiber composite membrane was prepared as substrate layer, and AC was loaded on the surface of the CA/CS composite membrane as a functional adsorption layer. When the spraying pressure was 0.01 MPa and the mass ratio of AC/CS was 2:1, a composite membrane with even and compact morphology could be obtained. Both the compact AC functional layer and complete CA/CS substrate layer endowed the AC–CA/CS composite membrane with an excellent water filtration property. At low feeding pressure, the permeate flux and rejection rate of bisphenol A (BPA) could reach 9.27 × 10 3 L m −2 h −1 and 98.31%, respectively. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacities of the membrane were investigated. It tended to equilibrate quickly in 2 min for dyes and BPA. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of the membrane for acid blue, acid yellow and BPA were 175.80, 164.0815 and 79.58 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process conformed to pseudo‐second‐order kinetics and the Langmuir monolayer adsorption model. CONCLUSIONS This work could provide a practical and effective feasibility for membrane separation technology. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI)

Synthesis of Synergistic Nitrogen-Doped NiMoO 4 /Ni 3 N Heterostructure for Implementation of an Efficient Alkaline Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Electrochemical water splitting is considered as an effective and promising method to produce the ideal hydrogen energy to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution problems. In this paper, we successfully synthesized the N-doped NiMoO 4 /Ni 3 N heterostructure, which exhibited an efficient HER performance with a lower overpotential of 51 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and a lower Tafel slope value of 45.47 mV dec -1 compared with those of NiMoO 4 , N-doped NiMoO 4 , or Ni 3 N owing to the synergistic effect of N doping and construction of the superior heterostructure. When the N-doped NiMoO 4 /Ni 3 N heterostructure is used as a cathode and the well-recognized excellent OER material (NiFe-LDH) is used as an anode to construct the two-electrode electrolyzer, the system requires only 1.506 and 1.559 V to achieve the current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm -2 , respectively, which are lower than those of the commercial Pt/C//RuO 2 system (1.573 and 1.634 V, respectively) or many other reported systems. At the same time, this two-electrode system demonstrates excellent durability in electrocatalytic water splitting. This design method paved the way for the development of another electrocatalytic system.

Observations of Intermediate-Scale Diurnal Waves in the Equatorial Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere

The purpose of this study is to seek observational evidence for diurnal, vertically propagating inertia-gravity waves (IGWs) in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). Numerical modeling studies indicate that vertically propagating IGWs excited by tropical heating provide a significant source of momentum for the semiannual oscillation (SAO) in the equatorial zonal mean winds. The power spectrum of these waves has a strong diurnal component. We analyze global patterns of ascending and descending node differences in MLT satellite temperatures, which are assumed in this study to be proxies for waves of diurnal period. Juxtaposed upon the planetary-scale features are localized variations with longitudinal wavelengths ranging from 25 deg to 50 deg, and with vertical wavelengths between 13 and 25 km. These intermediate-scale variations are spatially coherent, and persist for several weeks. Their amplitudes generally increase with altitude, while their phase structures suggest both eastward and westward propagation. The variance of wave numbers 9-17 in the MLT is examined in relation to the underlying stratospheric zonal mean zonal gradient winds. Stronger variances generally coincide with periods where the underlying zonal mean winds are relatively light, or unidirectional. The weak inverse association between variance strength and zonal wind magnitude is suggestive of a wave filtering mechanism.
