Dual‐Gradient Construction on Li‐Rich Cathodes for High Stability Lithium Battery

Abstract The practical applications of high‐energy Li‐rich layered oxides (LLOs) have been hindered by the severe performance degradation including voltage decay and capacity fading. The gradient construction toward high‐activity interior and high‐stability exterior, typically realized by gradually changed transition metal (TM) gradient in LLOs, can alleviate the performance degradation to certain degrees. In this study, a gradient design of Al/Mg dopants is demonstrated for the TM‐gradient LLOs to further harmonize the high‐activity interior and high‐stability exterior, thereby forming the dual (TM and doping) gradient. As a result, superior capacity retention of 86% and a minor voltage decay of 0.54 mV cycle −1 are achieved at 1 C after 300 cycles. The improved electrochemical stability of the dual‐gradient LLO is attributed to the enhanced surface stability and suppressed bulk structure degeneration of LLOs upon electrochemical cycling. The dual‐gradient design serves as an important approach to fabricate high‐performance bulk LLOs toward applications.

Quantitative Identification of Dopant Occupation in Li‐Rich Cathodes

Elemental doping is widely used to improve the performance of cathode materials in lithium‐ion batteries. However, macroscopic/statistical investigation on how doping sites are distributed in the material lattice, despite being a key prerequisite for understanding and manipulating the doping effect, has not been effectively established. Herein, to solve this predicament, a universal strategy is proposed to quantitatively identify the locations of Al and Mg dopants in lithium‐rich layered oxides (LLOs). Solid evidence confirms that Al prefers to occupy the transition metal (TM) layer, while Mg evenly occupies both TM and Li layers. As a result, Mg significantly reduces the thickness of LiO 2 slabs at room temperature, which will increase the energy barrier of oxygen activation and enhance the structure stability of LLOs. The suppressed oxygen activity in Mg‐doped LLO can be kinetically unlocked at 55 °C. The different characteristics of Al and Mg enlighten an Al/Mg co‐doping strategy to optimize LLOs, which significantly improves the cycle performance while lifting the capacity. In conclusion, these insights from the quantitative identification of doping sites shed light on the manipulation of doping effects toward better cathodes.

A Low-Voltage Layered Na 2 TiGeO 5 Anode for Lithium-Ion Battery

Titanium-based anode materials have achieved much progress with the wide studies in lithium-ion batteries. However, these known materials usually possess high discharge voltage platforms and limited energy densities. In this work, a titanium-based oxide of Na 2 TiGeO 5 with layered structure, two-dimensional lamellar frame and exposed highly active (001) facet, exhibiting good electrochemical performance in terms of high capacity (410 mAh g –1 with a current density of 50 mA g –1 ), excellent rate capability and cycling stability with no obvious capacity attenuation after 4000 cycles, is reported. The appropriate discharge voltage plateau at around 0.2 V endows the Na 2 TiGeO 5 anode material high security compared with graphite and high energy density compared with spinel Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 . Combining the electrochemical tests and the density functional theory calculations, the Li + storage mechanism of Na 2 TiGeO 5 is elucidated and the conversion reaction process is revealed. More importantly, this study provides a way to develop low-voltage and high-capacity titanium-based anode materials for efficient energy storage.

Full Concentration Gradient-Tailored Li-Rich Layered Oxides for High-Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-rich layered oxides (LLOs) are prospective cathode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but severe voltage decay and energy attenuation with cycling still hinder their practical applications. In this study, a series of full concentration gradient-tailored agglomerated-sphere LLOs are designed with linearly decreasing Mn and linearly increasing Ni and Co from the particle center to the surface. The gradient-tailored LLOs exhibit noticeably reduced voltage decay, enhanced rate performance, improved cycle stability, and thermal stability. Without any material modifications or electrolyte optimizations, the gradient-tailored LLO with medium-slope shows the best electrochemical performance, with a very low average voltage decay of 0.8 mV per cycle as well as a capacity retention of 88.4% within 200 cycles at 200 mA g –1 . These excellent findings are due to spinel structure suppression, electrochemical stress optimization, and Jahn-Teller effect inhibition. Further investigation shows that the gradient-tailored LLO reduces the thermal release percentage by as much as about 41% when the battery is charged to 4.4 V. This study provides an effective method to suppress the voltage decay of LLOs for further practical utilization in LIBs and also puts forward a bulk-structure design strategy to prepare better electrode materials for different rechargeable batteries.

TiO2 Nanocrystal-Framed Li 2 TiSiO 5 Platelets for Low-Voltage Lithium Battery Anode

Titanium-based anode materials are attracting considerable attention for use in high-performance lithium-ion batteries, but the compromised energy density caused by high voltage plateaus and unsatisfactory capacities severely retards their practical applications. Herein, a molten-salt synthesis of Li 2 TiSiO 5 crystalline platelets and a subsequent selective facet modification by in situ growth of TiO 2 nanocrystal frames are facilely achieved. The discharge voltage plateau at around 0.5 V renders the Li 2 TiSiO 5 anode safe compared with graphite and confers a high energy density compared with zero-strain Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anode. With the optimized size, structure, and content of modified TiO2 nanocrystals associated with the exposed (001) plane of Li 2 TiSiO 5 , the Li 2 TiSiO 5 -based anodes can deliver a capacity of above 300 mAh g -1 , enhanced rate performance, and a capacity retention of 66% after 10 000 cycles. In situ X-ray diffraction and ex situ transmission electron microscopy have demonstrated the structural stability of the anodes upon charge/discharge. Further theoretical calculation reveals 3D migration paths of Li + ions in Li 2 TiSiO 5 . The selective modification of in situ grown TiO2 nanocrystals on certain facets of crystallites opens a new door for the development of electrode materials possessing superior electrochemical properties.
