Extended chain crystals of linear high polymers.

Studies of extended chain crystals carried out over the last 10 years have been reviewed. Crystallization in an extended chain conformation is possible either by chain folding followed by extension in the solid state, or by crystallization during polymerization. The equilibrium isometric crystal habit is only rarely exhibited. Crystals which derive from folded chain macroconformation by subsequent chain extension have lamellar habit, crystals which crystallize during polymerization often show fibrillar habit because of nucleation limitation. The morphology of extended chain crystals is analogous to folded chain crystals. Their properties have been shown to be close to the extrapolated equilibrium properties.

Fast differential thermal analysis.

A study is conducted of the limits of time-dependent differential thermal analysis (DTA). Applications of DTA to the hysteresis phenomena of glasses are also reported. The computation of DTA sample temperatures is discussed, giving attention to feasible heating rates, transient effects to be measured, and the simulation of DTA responses to changes in thermal diffusivity similar to hysteresis phenomena in glasses. The reproducibility of temperature recording is checked with zone-refined organic chemicals.

Morphology of poly-p-xylylene crystallized during polymerization.

The morphology of as-polymerized poly-p-xylylene grown between -17 and 30 C is found to consist of lame llar alpha crystals oriented with the (010) plane parallel to the support surface. The crystallinity decreases with decreasing polymerization temperature. Spherulitic and nonspherulitic portions of the polymer film consist of folded chain lamellas with the chain axis parallel to the support surface. The results were obtained by small- and wide-angle X-ray measurements, electron and optical microscopy, and differential thermal analysis.

Kubo, S.

Crystal structure of alpha poly-p-xylylene.

A crystal structure of alpha poly-p-xylylene is proposed with the help of data of oriented crystals grown during polymerization. The unit cell is monoclinic with the parameters a = 8.57 A, b = 10.62 A, c = 6.54 A (chain axis), and beta = 101.3 deg. Four repeating units per cell lead to a calculated density of 1.185 g/cu cm and a packing density of 0.71. The probable space group is P2 sub 1/m.
