Application of boundary layer control to HSCT low speed configuration

The feasibility of using boundary layer control (BLC) on a high speed civil transport (HSCT) high lift configuration for low speed performance improvement is studied. The possibility of using a part of the suction system previously designed for cruise laminar flow control (LFC) for low speed BLC mode was explored. A suction scheme for BLC was devised for the HSCT high lift configuration. The extent of the suction regions and levels were determined via panel method based inviscid flow analysis coupled with three-dimensional boundary layer analyses. The compatibility of the BLC suction requirements was assessed, and the modifications necessary to operate the system in both modes of operation, were determined. An assessment of the potential aerodynamic performance improvement resulting from an implementation of the BLC concept compared to an optimized simple flap configuration without BLC was made by an Euler code analysis of the simple flap configuration.

Geodetic applications of laser ranging

The paper describes the use of dynamic methods of laser ranging of a low altitude satellite along with proposed experiments involving both dynamic and geodetic methods of laser ranging of the Lageos satellite. Particular attention is given to the testing of laser ranging techniques across the San Andreas Fault in California where it is hoped that plate motion will be observable after several years of measurements.

An algorithm for targeting finite burn maneuvers

An algorithm was developed to solve the following problem: given the characteristics of the engine to be used to make a finite burn maneuver and given the desired orbit, when must the engine be ignited and what must be the orientation of the thrust vector so as to obtain the desired orbit? The desired orbit is characterized by classical elements and functions of these elements whereas the control parameters are characterized by the time to initiate the maneuver and three direction cosines which locate the thrust vector. The algorithm was built with a Monte Carlo capability whereby samples are taken from the distribution of errors associated with the estimate of the state and from the distribution of errors associated with the engine to be used to make the maneuver.
