Structural and spectral studies of sunspots

Observations of umbral cores, both by multicolor photometry and by narrow band photometry in the vicinity of the sodium D lines, are described, and evidence is given which supports the validity of many umbral models, each of which describes different aspects of the observed umbral cores. Theoretical studies carried on at the observatory include the following: (1) Zeeman profiles of the sodium D sub 2 line and other lines; (2) turbulent heat conduction, sound waves, and the missing flux in sunspots; (3) chromospheric heating above spots by Alfven waves; (4) magnetic convection in the sun and solar neutrinos; (5) models of starspots on flare stars; (5) starspots on the primaries of contact binary systems; and (6) implications of starspots on red dwarfs.

Structural and spectral studies of sunspots

The work is reported in the multicolor photometry of umbral cores, and the residual intensity midway between the Na D1 and D2 lines. The photelectric magnetometer observations, the generation of umbral flashes and penumbral running waves, and the work on sunspot interior modes with Alfen wave emission are discussed.

URSIES - An ultravariable resolution single interferometer echelle scanner.

Use of a Fabry-Perot interferometer in a Ramsay mount in tandem with an echelle Hilger monochromator with pinholes instead of slits. The instrument, URSIES, is enclosed within a pressure chamber filled with Freon. Photoelectric pulse counting techniques and pressure scanning are used to record the spectrum. This design has four basic advantages: (1) the resolution of the scanner is variable from 5.0 to 0.005 A, and the effective wavelength range is quite broad, from 3500 to 13,000 A; (2) a light gain of ten over conventional grating scanners at resolutions of 0.1 A or better is achieved; (3) very low levels of light from outside the wavelength passband reach the detector; for a resolution of 0.03 A at 6000 A this level is 5%; and (4) there are very low levels of scattered light from the pinholes when extended sources are observed. The scattered light from the instrument at the edge of the solar disk is found to be less than 1% from 4000 to 11,000 A. Measurements demonstrating these advantages are discussed.

Photoelectric line profiles in umbral spectra.

Umbral line profiles of H-alpha, NaD2 and HeI 10830 have been observed photoelectrically with a pressure scanning spectrometer. The H-alpha line profile shows, in a medium-sized spot, a pronounced weakening in the wings but a persistence of the line core in agreement with the results of Fricke and Elsaesser (1965). The profile of the HeI 10830 line shows an unexpected strengthening over the umbra of the two spots which have been observed. The NaD2 line profile together with continuum observations at 4260, 5890, and 6530 A have been accounted for with an empirical (T, tau) relation by one of us (Yun, 1971). The wavelength dependence and the absolute values from 4000 to 14,000 A of the intensity curve generated by this relation shows very good agreement with the intensities observed by Woehl et al. (1970) in a spot of similar diameter.

A pressure scanning Fabry-Perot magnetometer.

Description of an oscillating magnetic analyzer (KDP crystal plus Glan-Thompson prism) coupled to an echelle-interferometer spectrograph, and of single-slit magnetometer which by pressure variations can be made to scan the entire profiles of the circularly and linearly polarized Zeeman components. Freon gas is used as the scanner gas with wavelength displacements of 0.02 A per 0.1 in. Hg pressure change at the NaD lines. The available scan range is 15 A in the visual spectral region.
