Precisely modulate interfacial Bi-O bridge bond in Co-TCPP/Bi 3 O 4 Br to trigger long-lasting charge separation for boosting CO 2 photoreduction

Insufficient charge separation and feeble CO 2 activation limit the CO 2 photoreduction efficiency. It is highly desirable to consciously construct organic–inorganic hybrid composites to simultaneously accelerate charge separation and provide favorable active sites. Herein, a defect-induced interfacial Bi-O bridge bond is constructed by grafting terminal O of cobalt porphyrin (Co-TCPP) with Bi 3 O4Br. Systematic investigations reveal that the Bi-O bridge bond as the charge migration bridge accelerates the extraction and transfer of electron from the external [Bi 3 O 4 ] layers to Co-TCPP, and the millisecond separation lifetime of electrons on Co-TCPP can be achieved. Co atoms as the active sites optimized the CO 2 adsorption and activation, thus promoting the formation of COOH*. As a result, the CO 2 photoreduction rate of 0.5% Co-TCPP/Bi 3 O4Br reaches 71.3 μmol g -1 h -1 in pure water, 2.53-fold of that on the pristine Bi 3 O4Br. This work provides atomistic insights and strategies for the construction of new organic–inorganic hybrid materials for artificial photosynthesis and CO 2 photoreduction.

Boosting electrosynthesis of ammonia on surface-engineered MXene Ti 3 C 2

Seeking a breakthrough in the development of efficient nitrogen fixation catalysts has become the frontier of energy and chemical conversion schemes. In this work, we report that the MXene Ti 3 C 2 can serve as a promising catalyst for the electrochemical N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions. The electrocatalytic performance of Ti 3 C 2 can be further optimized through surface engineering. Specifically, Ti 3 C 2 with the increased surface hydroxyl moieties demonstrates enhanced production of NH 3 with a yield rate of 1.71 μg h -1 cm -2 , a Faradaic efficiency of 7.01% at -0.2 V vs. RHE at 20 °C and an even higher yield rate of 12.46 μg h -1 cm -2 together with a Faradaic efficiency of 9.03% at -0.2 V vs. RHE at 60 °C. The detailed electrochemical analysis suggests that the surface hydroxyl modification can effectively facilitate the electron transfer, surface adsorption and activation of dinitrogen. Our work sheds light on the development of efficient NRR catalysts based on earth-abundant elements.

Isolated single atom cobalt in Bi 3 O 4 Br atomic layers to trigger efficient CO 2 photoreduction

The design of efficient and stable photocatalysts for robust CO 2 reduction without sacrifice reagent or extra photosensitizer is still challenging. Herein, a single-atom catalyst of isolated single atom cobalt incorporated into Bi 3 O 4 Br atomic layers is successfully prepared. The cobalt single atoms in the Bi 3 O 4 Br favors the charge transition, carrier separation, CO 2 adsorption and activation. It can lower the CO 2 activation energy barrier through stabilizing the COOH* intermediates and tune the rate-limiting step from the formation of adsorbed intermediate COOH* to be CO* desorption. Taking advantage of cobalt single atoms and two-dimensional ultrathin Bi 3 O 4 Br atomic layers, the optimized catalyst can perform light-driven CO 2 reduction with a selective CO formation rate of 107.1 µmol g –1 h –1 , roughly 4 and 32 times higher than that of atomic layer Bi 3 O 4 Br and bulk Bi 3 O 4 Br, respectively.

Defect‐Tailoring Mediated Electron–Hole Separation in Single‐Unit‐Cell Bi 3 O 4 Br Nanosheets for Boosting Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Nitrogen Fixation

Abstract Solar photocatalysis is a potential solution to satisfying energy demand and its resulting environmental impact. However, the low electron–hole separation efficiency in semiconductors has slowed the development of this technology. The effect of defects on electron–hole separation is not always clear. A model atomically thin structure of single‐unit‐cell Bi 3 O 4 Br nanosheets with surface defects is proposed to boost photocatalytic efficiency by simultaneously promoting bulk‐ and surface‐charge separation. Defect‐rich single‐unit‐cell Bi 3 O 4 Br displays 4.9 and 30.9 times enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and nitrogen fixation activity, respectively, than bulk Bi 3 O 4 Br. After the preparation of single‐unit‐cell structure, the bismuth defects are controlled to tune the oxygen defects. Benefiting from the unique single‐unit‐cell architecture and defects, the local atomic arrangement and electronic structure are tuned so as to greatly increase the charge separation efficiency and subsequently boost photocatalytic activity. This strategy provides an accessible pathway for next‐generation photocatalysts.
