Regioisomeric Spirobifluorene CANAL Ladder Polymers and Their Gas Separation Performance

For this work, we synthesized and characterized two isomeric microporous hydrocarbon ladder polymers from catalytic arene norbornene annulation (CANAL) of regioisomeric bis-norbornene fused spirobifluorenes, where the ladder chains are connected either through the same fluorene unit or across two different fluorene units in spirobifluorene. This pair of isomeric polymers was used to investigate the effect of ladder macromolecular structures on the microporosity and transport properties. Both polymers form mechanically intact films with thermal stability up to 480 °C and relatively high BET surface areas. The polymer formed from 2,7-dibromospirobifluorene showed higher BET surface area and higher gas permeability than the polymer from 2,2'-dibromospirobifluorene despite similar intersegmental spacing as indicated by X-ray scattering. The aging behavior for both polymers followed the same trend as the previously reported CANAL-fluorene polymers, with dramatically increased permselectivities over time, resulting in gas separation performance above the 2008 upper bounds for H 2 /CH 4 and O 2 /N 2 .

Clinical effects of 3D printing-assisted posterolateral incision in the treatment of ankle fractures involving the posterior malleolus

Objective To explore the clinical outcomes of a 3D printing-assisted posterolateral approach for the treatment of ankle fractures involving the posterior malleolus. Methods A total of 51 patients with ankle fractures involving the posterior malleolus admitted to our hospital from January 2018 to December 2019 were selected. The patients were divided into 3D printing group (28 cases) and control group (23 cases). 3D printing was performed for ankle fractures, followed by printing of a solid model and simulation of the operation on the 3D model. The operation was then performed according to the preoperative plan, including open reduction and internal fixation via the posterolateral approach with the patient in the prone position. Routine x-ray and CT examinations of the ankle joint were performed, and ankle function was evaluated using the American Foot and Ankle Surgery Association (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score. Results All patients underwent x-ray and CT examinations. All fractures healed clinically, without loss of reduction or failure of internal fixation. Good clinical effects were achieved in both groups of patients. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss and intraoperative fluoroscopy frequency in the 3D printing group were significantly less than those in the control group ( p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in the anatomical reduction rate of fractures or the incidence of surgical complications ( p > 0.05). Conclusion The 3D printing-assisted posterolateral approach is effective in the treatment of ankle fractures involving the posterior malleolus. The approach can be well planned before the operation, is simple to perform, yields good fracture reduction and fixation, and has good prospects for clinical application.

Frontal Polymerization of Dihydrofuran Comonomer Facilitates Thermoset Deconstruction

Frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) is a rapid, low-energy manufacturing reaction that is useful for curing thermosetting materials. FROMP of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) results in poly(dicyclopentadiene) (p(DCPD)), a tough thermoset with excellent mechanical performance and chemical stability. Like most thermosets, p(DCPD) cannot be reprocessed and is therefore difficult to recycle. Previous work demonstrated that the incorporation of a small quantity of cleavable units in the strand segments of p(DCPD) networks enables their deconstruction. Here, we report that a commercially available multifunctional comonomer, 2,3-dihydrofuran (DHF), both acts as a potent Grubbs catalyst inhibitor during FROMP and introduces acid cleavable units. The resulting materials retain high performance characteristics, including glass-transition temperatures ranging from 115 to 165 °C and ultimate strength ranging from 35 to 40 MPa. The addition of DHF above critical loading levels enables deconstructable thermosets. Here, we further demonstrate freeform three-dimensional (3D) printing of deconstructable thermosets via frontal polymerization.

Hydrocarbon ladder polymers with ultrahigh permselectivity for membrane gas separations

Membranes have the potential to substantially reduce energy consumption of industrial chemical separations, but their implementation has been limited owing to a performance upper bound—the trade-off between permeability and selectivity. Although recent developments of highly permeable polymer membranes have advanced the upper bounds for various gas pairs, these polymers typically exhibit limited selectivity. We report a class of hydrocarbon ladder polymers that can achieve both high selectivity and high permeability in membrane separations for many industrially relevant gas mixtures. Additionally, their corresponding films exhibit desirable mechanical and thermal properties. Tuning of the ladder polymer backbone configuration was found to have a profound effect on separation performance and aging behavior.

Double-layer graphene optical modulators and methods of fabrication thereof

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus related to optical modulators. In one aspect, a device includes a substrate, a first electrically insulating material disposed over the substrate, a first graphene layer and a second graphene layer disposed in the first electrically insulating material and being separated by the first electrically insulating material, and a waveguide disposed on the first electrically insulating material. At least a portion of the second graphene layer overlays at least a portion of the first graphene layer. The waveguide overlays both the first graphene layer and the second graphene layer.

Phase transition enhanced superior elasticity in freestanding single-crystalline multiferroic BiFeO 3 membranes

The integration of ferroic oxide thin films into advanced flexible electronics will bring multifunctionality beyond organic and metallic materials. However, it is challenging to achieve high flexibility in single-crystalline ferroic oxides that is considerable to organic or metallic materials. Here, we demonstrate the superior flexibility of freestanding single-crystalline BiFeO 3 membranes, which are typical multiferroic materials with multifunctionality. They can endure cyclic 180° folding and have good recoverability, with the maximum bending strain up to 5.42% during in situ bending under scanning electron microscopy, far beyond their bulk counterparts. Such superior elasticity mainly originates from reversible rhombohedral-tetragonal phase transition, as revealed by phase-field simulations. This study suggests a general fundamental mechanism for a variety of ferroic oxides to achieve high flexibility and to work as smart materials in flexible electronics.
