Simultaneous removal of C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 6 for C 2 H 4 purification by robust MOFs featuring a high density of heteroatoms

Simultaneous removal of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 from C 2 H 4 streams is of great importance in the petrochemical industry but remains a challenging task. To address this challenge, we have selected three isoreticular MOFs with high stability, low cost, and desirable scale-up ability, namely, MOF-303, MIL-160, and CAU-23 and assessed their potential in simultaneous removal of acetylene and ethane for ethylene purification. Each MOF exhibits desirable C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 6 uptake capacity (>5.5 mmol g –1 and >4 mmol g –1 , respectively), as well as good C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (>2) and C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity (>1.5). Notably, MOF-303 takes up 4.96 mmol g –1 C 2 H 6 at 298 K and 1 bar, the highest value among the three MOFs, with C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity in the range of 1.55–2.47. MIL-160 possesses a very high C 2 H 2 uptake (9.1 mmol g –1 ) and C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 selectivity, 10.6 (1 : 1, v/v), at 298 K, much higher than those of all other MOFs tested to date for simultaneous removal of C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 2 from C 2 H 4 . The results from breakthrough experiments confirm that all three MOFs demonstrate excellent performance for C 2 H 4 purification in a ternary mixture of C 2 H 6 /C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 2 (1 : 1 : 1, v/v/v). Here, for MOF-303, MIL-160, and CAU-23, polymer-grade C 2 H 4 up to 0.164, 0.21, and 0.181 mmol g –1 can be obtained from the equimolar ternary mixture in a single separation step from the breakthrough experiment. Additionally, DFT calculations have been performed to further investigate the mechanism of adsorption/separation for C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 2 .

Discrimination of xylene isomers in a stacked coordination polymer

The separation and purification of xylene isomers is an industrially important but challenging process. Developing highly efficient adsorbents is crucial for the implementation of simulated moving bed technology for industrial separation of these isomers. Herein, we report a stacked one-dimensional coordination polymer {[Mn(dhbq)(H 2 O) 2 ], H 2 dhbq = 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone} that exhibits an ideal molecular recognition and sieving of xylene isomers. Its distinct temperature-adsorbate–dependent adsorption behavior enables full separation of p -, m -, and o -xylene isomers in both vapor and liquid phases. The delicate stimuli-responsive swelling of the structure imparts this porous material with exceptionally high flexibility and stability, well-balanced adsorption capacity, high selectivity, and fast kinetics at conditions mimicking industrial settings. This study may offer an alternative approach for energy-efficient and adsorption-based industrial xylene separation and purification processes.

Metal–Organic Framework Based Hydrogen-Bonding Nanotrap for Efficient Acetylene Storage and Separation

The removal of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) is a critical industrial process for manufacturing high purity C 2 H 2 . However, it remains challenging to address the trade-off between adsorption capacity and selectivity, on account of their similar physical properties and molecular sizes. To overcome this difficulty, here we report a novel strategy involving the regulation of hydrogen-bonding nanotrap on the pore surface to promote the separation of C 2 H 2 /CO 2 mixtures, in three isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, named as MIL-160, CAU-10H, and CAU-23, respectively). Among them, MIL-160, which has abundant hydrogen-bonding acceptors as nanotraps, can selectively capture acetylene molecules and demonstrates ultra-high C 2 H 2 storage capacity (191 cm 3 g –1 , or 213 cm 3 cm –3 ) but much less CO 2 uptake (90 cm 3 g –1 ) under ambient conditions. The C 2 H 2 adsorption amount of MIL-160 is remarkably higher than the other two isostructural MOFs (86 cm 3 g –1 and 119 cm 3 g –1 for CAU-10H and CAU-23 respectively) under the same conditions. More importantly, both simulation and experimental breakthrough results show that MIL-160 sets a new benchmark for equimolar C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation in terms of the separation potential (Δq break = 5.02 mol/kg) and C 2 H 2 productivity (6.8 mol/kg). In addition, in-situ FT-IR experiments combined with computational modeling further reveal that the unique host-guest multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions between the nanotrap and C 2 H 2 is the key factor for achieving extraordinary acetylene storage capacity and superior C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity. Furthermore, this work provides a novel and powerful approach to address the trade-off of this extremely challenging gas separation.

Flexible Zn-MOF with Rare Underlying scu Topology for Effective Separation of C6 Alkane Isomers

Adsorptive separation by porous solids provides an energy-efficient alternative for the purification of important chemical species compared to energy-intensive distillations. Particularly, the separation of linear hexane isomers from its branched counterparts is crucial to produce premium grade gasoline with high research octane number (RON). Herein, we report the synthesis of a new, flexible zinc-based metal-organic framework, [Zn 5 (μ 3 -OH) 2 (adtb) 2 (H 2 O) 5 ·5 DMA] (Zn-adtb), constructed from a butterfly shaped carboxylate linker with underlying (4,8)-connected scu topology capable of separating the C6 isomers nHEX, 3MP, and 23DMB. The sorbate-sorbent interactions and separation mechanisms were investigated and analyzed through in situ FTIR, solid state NMR measurements and computational modeling. Here these studies reveal that Zn-adtb discriminates the nHEX/3MP isomer pair through a kinetic separation mechanism and the nHEX/23DMB isomer pair through a molecular sieving mechanism. Column breakthrough measurements further demonstrate the efficient separation of linear nHEX from the mono- and dibranched isomers.

Ultrastable Zirconium-Based Cationic Metal–Organic Frameworks for Perrhenate Removal from Wastewater

The effective removal of radioactive 99 TcO 4 – anion from nuclear wastewater remains a very difficult unsolved problem. Functional adsorbent materials with high stability, anion-exchange capacity, excellent selectivity, and recyclability are much needed to solve this problem. In this work, we designed two stable cationic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)—Zr-tcbp-Me and Zr-tcpp-Me—for possible use as adsorbent materials to remove 99 TcO 4 – . Both compounds were synthesized by solvothermal reactions of the tetracarboxylate ligand with zirconium salt, followed by postsynthetic modification (N-methylation). Here, the crystallinity of both zirconium-based MOFs can be well retained under harsh conditions, and they exhibit high adsorption capacity and selectivity toward ReO 4 – anion, a nonradioactive analogue of 99 TcO 4 – . Zr-tcbp-Me and Zr-tcpp-Me demonstrate the highest framework stability toward acidity among all previously reported cationic MOFs that have been tested for perrhenate removal from wastewater.

Calcium–Based Metal–Organic Frameworks and Their Potential Applications

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) built on calcium metal (Ca-MOFs) represent a unique subclass of MOFs featuring high stability, low toxicity, and relatively low density. Ca-MOFs show considerable potential for molecular separations, electronic, magnetic, and biomedical applications, although they are not investigated as extensively as transition metal-based MOFs. Compared to MOFs made of other groups of metals, Ca-MOFs may be particularly advantageous for certain applications such as adsorption and storage of light molecules because of their gravimetric benefit, and drug delivery due to their high biocompatibility. This review intends to provide an overview on the recent development of Ca-MOFs, including their synthesis, crystal structures, important properties, and related applications. Here, various synthetic methods and techniques, types of building blocks, structure and porosity features, selected physical properties, and potential uses will be discussed and summarized. Representative examples will be illustrated for each type of important applications with a focus on their structure–property relations.
