Observation of nonlinear planar Hall effect in magnetic-insulator–topological-insulator heterostructures

Interfacing topological insulators (TIs) with magnetic insulators (MIs) have been widely used to study the interaction between topological surface states and magnetism. Previous transport studies typically interpret the suppression of weak antilocalization or appearance of the anomalous Hall effect as signatures of the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) imposed to TIs. Here, in this work, we report the observation of the nonlinear planar Hall effect (NPHE) in Bi 2 ⁢Se 3 films grown on MI thulium and yttrium-iron-garnet (TmIG and YIG) substrates, which is an order of magnitude larger than that in Bi 2 ⁢Se 3 grown on nonmagnetic gadolinium-gallium-garnet (GGG) substrate. The nonlinear Hall resistance in TmIG/Bi 2 ⁢Se 3 depends linearly on the external magnetic field, while that in YIG/Bi 2 ⁢Se 3 exhibits an extra hysteresis loop around zero field. The magnitude of the NPHE is found to scale inversely with carrier density. We speculate that the observed NPHE is related to the MPE-induced exchange gap opening and out-of-plane spin textures in the TI surface states, which may be used as an alternative transport signature of the MPE in MI/TI heterostructures.

Phonon Magnetic Moment from Electronic Topological Magnetization

The traditional theory of magnetic moments for chiral phonons is based on the picture of the circular motion of the Born effective charge, typically yielding a small fractional value of the nuclear magneton. Here we investigate the adiabatic evolution of electronic states induced by the lattice vibration of a chiral phonon and obtain an electronic orbital magnetization in the form of a topological second Chern form. We find that the traditional theory needs to be refined by introducing a k resolved Born effective charge, and identify another contribution from the phonon-modified electronic energy together with the momentum-space Berry curvature. The second Chern form can diverge when there is a Yang’s monopole near the parameter space of interest as illustrated by considering a phonon at the Brillouin zone corner in a gapped graphene model. We also find large magnetic moments for the optical phonon in bulk topological materials where nontopological contribution is also important. Our results agree with recent observations in experiments.

Unified bulk semiclassical theory for intrinsic thermal transport and magnetization currents

In this work, we reveal the unexpected role of the material inhomogeneity in unifying the formulation of intrinsic thermal and thermoelectric transport as well as magnetization currents. The smooth inhomogeneity leads to the position dependent local band dispersion and phase-space Berry curvature, enabling a general and rapid access to transport and magnetization currents displaying the momentum-space Berry curvature physics. Our theory does not invoke the boundary current, the thermodynamic approach to magnetization or any mechanical counterpart of statistical forces. By introducing a fictitious inhomogeneity, it applies to homogeneous samples as well, promoting the inhomogeneity to be a basic trick in semiclassical transport theories. Such a trick works regardless of the driving force of transport, e.g., temperature gradient, in contrast to the trick of fictitious gravitational field in quantum transport theories. We thus include more general mechanical driving forces and establish the Mott relation between the resulting transport thermal and electric currents, whereas this relation for these two currents was previously only known when an electric field is the driving force.

Linear magnetoresistance induced by intra-scattering semiclassics of Bloch electrons

Weak-field magnetoresistance has seen a revived interest due to the distinct role played by the momentum-space Berry curvature of Bloch electrons. While most previous studies in this regard focus on the inter-scattering motion of semiclassical Bloch electrons in electromagnetic fields, the intra-scattering effects of the semiclassical dynamics augmented by the Berry curvature, magnetic moment, and shift vector on the magnetoresistance have been largely overlooked. Here, we uncover that these intra-scattering effects, which are neglected in the field-independent relaxation time approximation to the Boltzmann collision integral, can be as important as the inter-scattering ones. In this work, concrete calculations on the two-dimensional gapped Dirac model show that the sign of the negative linear magnetoresistance given by the Berry curvature alone is reversed when one considers the magnetic moment and shift vector.

Berry Phase Effects in Dipole Density and the Mott Relation

Here, we provide a unified semiclassical theory for thermoelectric responses of any observable represented by an operator $\hat{θ}$ that is well defined in periodic crystals. The Einstein and Mott relations are established generally in the presence of Berry phase effects for various physical realizations of $\hat{θ}$ in electronic systems, including the familiar case of the electric current as well as the currently controversial cases of the spin polarization and spin current. The magnetization current, which has been proven indispensable in the thermoelectric response of electric current, is generalized to the cases of various $\hat{θ}$. In our theory the dipole density of a physical quantity emerges and plays a vital role, which contains not only the statistical sum of the dipole moment of $\hat{θ}$ but also a Berry phase correction.
