UOTe: Kondo‐Interacting Topological Antiferromagnet in a Van der Waals Lattice

Since the initial discovery of 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials, significant effort has been made to incorporate the three properties of magnetism, band structure topology, and strong electron correlations—to leverage emergent quantum phenomena and expand their potential applications. However, the discovery of a single vdW material that intrinsically hosts all three ingredients has remained an outstanding challenge. Here, in this work, the discovery of a Kondo-interacting topological antiferromagnet is reported in the vdW 5f electron system UOTe. It has a high antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature of 150 K, with a unique AFM configuration that breaks the combined parity and time reversal (PT) symmetry in an even number of layers while maintaining zero net magnetic moment. This angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements reveal Dirac bands near the Fermi level, which combined with the theoretical calculations demonstrate UOTe as an AFM Dirac semimetal. Within the AFM order, the presence of the Kondo interaction is observed, as evidenced by the emergence of a 5ƒ flat band near the Fermi level below 100 K and hybridization between the Kondo band and the Dirac band. The density functional theory calculations in its bilayer form predict UOTe as a rare example of a fully-compensated AFM Chern insulator.

Polymorphism of Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH δ within the LK-99 mixture

During the synthetic exploration targeting the polycrystalline compound LK-99, an unexpected phase, Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH δ , was identified as a byproduct. We elucidated the composition of this compound through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Subsequent synthesis of the target compounds was achieved via high-temperature solid-state pellet reactions. The newly identified Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH δ has an orthorhombic crystal structure with space group Pnma , representing a unique structure differing from the hexagonal apatite phases of Pb 10 (PO 4 ) 6 O and Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH. Comprehensive temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent magnetization studies unveiled a temperature-independent magnetic characteristic of Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH δ . Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was employed to decipher the origins of the phase stability and confirm the presence of hydrogen atoms in Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH δ . These investigations revealed the presence of protonated oxygen sites, in addition to the interstitial water molecules within the structure, which may play critical roles in stabilizing the orthorhombic phase.

A pyroxene-based quantum magnet with multiple magnetization plateaus

Pyroxenes (AMX 2 O 6 ) consisting of infinite one-dimensional edge-sharing MO 6 chains and bridging XO 4 tetrahedra are fertile ground for finding quantum materials. Thus, here, we have studied calcium cobalt germanate (CaCoGe 2 O 6 ) and calcium cobalt silicate (CaCoSi 2 O 6 ) crystals in depth. Heat capacity data show that the spins in both compounds are dominantly Ising-like, even after being manipulated by high magnetic fields. On cooling below the Néel temperatures, a sharp field–induced transition in magnetization is observed for CaCoGe 2 O 6 , while multiple magnetization plateaus beneath the full saturation moment are spotted for CaCoSi 2 O 6 . Our analysis shows that these contrasting behaviors potentially arise from the different electron configurations of germanium and silicon, in which the 3d orbitals are filled in the former but empty in the latter, enabling electron hopping. Thus, silicate tetrahedra can aid the interchain superexchange pathway between cobalt(II) ion centers, while germanate ones tend to block it during magnetization.

Pressure-induced metallization and loss of surface magnetism in FeSi

Single-crystalline FeSi samples with a conducting surface state were studied under high pressure and magnetic field by means of electrical resistance measurements to explore how the bulk semiconducting state and the surface state are tuned by the application of pressure. Here, we found that the energy gap associated with the semiconducting bulk phase begins to close abruptly at a critical pressure of ~10 GPa and the bulk material becomes metallic with no obvious sign of any emergent phases or non-Fermi liquid behavior in temperature dependent electrical resistance in the neighborhood of the critical pressure above 3 K. Moreover, the metallic phase appears to remain at near-ambient pressure upon release of the pressure. Interestingly, the hysteresis in the electrical resistance vs magnetic field curve associated with the magnetically ordered conducting surface state decreases with pressure and vanishes at the critical pressure, while the slope of the electrical resistance vs magnetic field curve, which has a negative value for pressure below the critical pressure, decreases in magnitude with pressure and changes sign at the critical pressure. Thus the conducting surface state and the corresponding two-dimensional magnetic order collapse at the critical pressure where the energy gap of the bulk material starts to close abruptly, revealing the connection between the conducting surface state and the semiconducting bulk state in FeSi.

Continuous pressure-induced valence and magnetic transitions in EuMnSb 2

EuMnSb 2 is a unique and promising compound with complex magnetism (Eu and Mn sublattices) to realize magnetic control of topological quasiparticles. By applying pressure (P) to this system, we have observed a continuous pressure-induced valence change from Eu 2+ to Eu 3+ . Remarkably, despite the significant valence change in Eu ions, an extremely large increase in the magnetic ordering temperature (T N,Eu ) from 21 K at ambient pressure to 180 K at 28.4 GPa is detected. The substantial enhancement in T N,Eu is likely the consequence of the reduced distance between neighboring Eu ions and the enhanced indirect exchange interaction through increased 4f -5d mixing under pressure. Furthermore, T N,Eu (P) shows a discontinuous change above 8 GPa, although the orthorhombic crystal structure remains stable. Our experimental data indicate the record high value in the magnetic hyperfine field of 151 Eu, reaching 74.1 T at 28.4 GPa and 26 K. In conclusion, these unusual electronic and magnetic transitions revealed by pressure highlight that EuMnSb 2 is a rich magnetic topological semimetal candidate for investigating a multitude of strong correlations.

Uncovering the phonon spectra and lattice dynamics of plastically deformable InSe van der Waals crystals

Stacking two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials in a layered bulk structure provides an appealing platform for the emergence of exotic physical properties. As a vdW crystal with exceptional plasticity, InSe offers the opportunity to explore various effects arising from the coupling of its peculiar mechanical behaviors and other physical properties. Here, we employ neutron scattering techniques to investigate the correlations of plastic interlayer slip, lattice anharmonicity, and thermal transport in InSe crystals. Not only are the interlayer slip direction and magnitude well captured by shifts in the Bragg reflections, but we also observe a deviation from the expected Debye behaviour in the heat capacity and lattice thermal conductivity. Combining the experimental data with first-principles calculations, we tentatively attribute the observed evidence of strong phonon-phonon interactions to a combination of a large acoustic-optical frequency resonance and a nesting effect. These findings correlate the macroscopic plastic slip and the microscopic lattice dynamics, providing insights into the mechano-thermo coupling and modulation in 2D vdW materials.
