Critical Role of the Interfacial Layer in Associating Polymers with Microphase Separation

Polymers with dynamic (transient) bonds, often called associating polymers, have been attracting significant attention in recent years due to their unique viscoelastic properties, self-healing ability, and recyclability. Nevertheless, understanding the mechanisms and the factors controlling their macroscopic properties remains limited due to the higher complexity introduced by the dynamic bonds. Here in this study, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), and rheology were applied to unravel the structure and dynamics of telechelic associating polymers with different molecular weights. SAXS measurements revealed phase separation of the functional end groups with an average cluster size of ~2–3 nm and the distance between clusters controlled by the chain length. Borrowing the interfacial layer model analysis of BDS data from the polymer nanocomposite field, we demonstrated the presence of an interfacial polymer layer with a thickness of ~0.7–0.9 nm surrounding these clusters. Rheological measurements showed quantitatively that the presence of the interfacial layer significantly alters the viscoelastic behavior of these materials, indicating the crucial role of the interfacial layer in defining the macroscopic mechanical properties of the studied telechelic materials. The presented results emphasize that phase separation of the functional groups in associating polymers leads to very significant changes of the viscoelastic properties, opening a promising avenue in the design of novel functional materials.

Turning Rubber into a Glass: Mechanical Reinforcement by Microphase Separation

Supramolecular associations provide a promising route to functional materials with properties such as self-healing, easy recyclability or extraordinary mechanical strength and toughness. The latter benefit especially from the transient character of the formed network, which enables dissipation of energy as well as regeneration of the internal structures. However, recent investigations revealed intrinsic limitations in the achievable mechanical enhancement. Here we present studies of a set of telechelic polymers with hydrogen-bonding chain ends exhibiting an extraordinarily high, almost glass-like, rubbery plateau. This is ascribed to the segregation of the associative ends into clusters and formation of an interfacial layer surrounding these clusters. An approach adopted from the field of polymer nanocomposites provides a quantitative description of the data and reveals the strongly altered mechanical properties of the polymer in the interfacial layer. These results demonstrate how employing phase separating dynamic bonds can lead to the creation of high-performance materials.

Rational Polymer Design of Stretchable Poly(ionic liquid) Membranes for Dual Applications

Many functional polymeric materials are inherently fragile at ambient conditions. Consequently, making them elastic and flexible is a challenging task, and such achievement is especially meaningful in a wide range of applications including separation membranes and stretchable devices. Poly(ionic liquids) (PILs), such as vinyl-imidazolium-based polymers, are known to be “brittle” functional polymers due to their “glassy” nature at ambient temperature. We herein developed a viable approach to enable glassy PILs with high flexibility and good elasticity via a rational molecular design of chemical composition and polymer architectures. The reversible addition/fragmentation chain transfer agents (RAFT-CTAs) were attached to the flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) backbones. The polymerization of functional ionic liquid monomers from RAFT-CTAs provided grafted copolymers with the functional side chains, which were further cross-linked by di-functional PDMS. Poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate is copolymerized with ionic liquid monomers to reduce the glass transition temperature (Tg), providing higher chain mobility and elasticity at ambient temperature. The synthesized elastic PIL-based membranes (E-PILs) have dramatically improved stretchability, reaching 122–422%. In addition to significantly improved extensibility, the synthesized E-PILs also exhibit higher ionic conductivity, critical for potential applications in solid-state batteries. Moreover, in comparison to glassy solid PIL membranes, the E-PILs also exhibited enhanced flexibility and excellent gas-separation performance.

Elastic Single-Ion Conducting Polymer Electrolytes: Toward a Versatile Approach for Intrinsically Stretchable Functional Polymers

Fabrication of stretchable functional polymeric materials usually relies on the physical adhesion between functional components and elastic polymers, while the interfacial resistance is a potential problem. Herein, a versatile approach on the molecular-level intrinsically stretchable polymer materials with defined functionality is reported. The single-ion conducting polymer electrolytes (SICPEs) were employed to demonstrate the proposed concept along with its potential application in stretchable batteries/electronics with improved energy efficiency and prolonged cell lifetime. The obtained membranes exhibit 88–252% elongation before breaking, and the mechanical properties are well adjustable. The galvanostatic test of the assembled cells using the obtained SICPE membrane exhibited a good cycling performance with a capacity retention of 81.5% after 100 cycles. The applicability of a proposed molecular-level design for intrinsically stretchable polymer materials is further demonstrated in other types of stretchable functional materials, including poly(vinylcarbazole)-based semiconducting polymers and poly(ethylene glycol)-based gas separation membranes.
