Correlated Displacement of Dynamic Elastic Dipoles Produces Nonclassical Electrostriction in Zr-Doped Ceria

By combining experimental data with density functional theory-based ab initio molecular dynamics modeling, this work provides evidence that nonclassical electrostriction in isovalent Zr-doped ceria is due to the correlated anharmonic motion of dynamic elastic dipoles associated with multiple [ZrO 8 ]-local bonding units with a high Zr concentration (Zr 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2 ). Introduction of 0.5 mol % trivalent or divalent codopants (Sc, Yb, La, or Ca) reduces the longitudinal electrostriction strain coefficient by more than a factor of 10, produces a 3-fold decrease in the relative dielectric permittivity, and increases the elastic modulus. Since these changes depend neither on the radius nor on the valency of the codopant, we conclude that the responsible species are charge-compensating oxygen vacancies (VO). For trivalent dopants (Do 0.005 Zr 0.1 Ce 0.895 O 1.9975 ), oxygen vacancies are present at a concentration ratio 1:40 with respect to Zr, giving, for random distribution, a characteristic interaction distance of ≤2.3 unit cells (1.2 nm). Oxygen vacancies participate in [ZrO 7 -V O ] local bonding units, disrupting the correlated dynamic displacements of the connected [ZrO 8 ]-local bonding units. Finally, such correlated motion of dynamic elastic dipoles may also explain the exponential increase in the longitudinal electrostriction strain coefficient with an increase in Zr concentration to <0.2 mole fraction and must be taken into account for further development of nonclassical electrostrictors based on Zr-doped ceria.

Lead-free Zr-doped ceria ceramics with low permittivity displaying giant electrostriction

Electrostrictors, materials developing mechanical strain proportional to the square of the applied electric field, present many advantages for mechanical actuation as they convert electrical energy into mechanical, but not vice versa. Both high relative permittivity and reliance on Pb as the key component in commercial electrostrictors pose serious practical and health problems. Here we describe a low relative permittivity (<250) ceramic, Zr x Ce 1-x O 2 (x < 0.2), that displays electromechanical properties rivaling those of the best performing electrostrictors: longitudinal electrostriction strain coefficient ~10 -16 m 2 /V 2 ; relaxation frequency ≈ a few kHz; and strain ≥0.02%. Combining X-ray absorption spectroscopy, atomic-level modeling and electromechanical measurements, here we show that electrostriction in Zr x Ce 1-x O 2 is enabled by elastic dipoles produced by anharmonic motion of the smaller isovalent dopant (Zr). Unlike the elastic dipoles in aliovalent doped ceria, which are present even in the absence of an applied elastic or electric field, the elastic dipoles in Zr x Ce 1-x O 2 are formed only under applied anisotropic field. The local descriptors of electrostrictive strain, namely, the cation size mismatch and dynamic anharmonicity, are sufficiently versatile to guide future searches in other polycrystalline solids.

New High-Entropy Perovskite Oxides with Increased Reducibility and Stability for Thermochemical Hydrogen Generation

This project aims to design, synthesize, and test a transformative class of High-Entropy Perovskite Oxides (HEPOs) as redox oxides to enable thermochemical hydrogen generation with improved stability, kinetics, and efficiency. These developed HEPOs are expected to demonstrate improved kinetics with oxygen surface exchange coefficient ( k > 7.5×10 -4 cm/s) in Budget Period (BP) 1, retain its structural stability in a broad range of oxygen non-stoichiometry (Δδ > 0.15) at a low operating reduction temperature of T red < 1400°C in BP 2, and deliver a H 2 yield of over 400 µmol per gram of oxide and high stability with less than 20% degradation after at least 50 cycles in BP 3. This project is feasible due to the unique thermodynamic properties (simultaneously increased reducibility and phase stability) and kinetic characters (stability against particle coarsening and potentially enhanced oxygen transport and surface reaction kinetics) of such HEPOs, and it is enabled by a unique active learning computational design approach. Computational studies have been conducted to investigate the oxygen vacancy formation in complex perovskite systems. * Accurate prediction of V O .. concentration with disordered A-site cations in Fe-based high-entropy perovskite oxides * Combined MC/DFT computation elucidates the mechanism of Co preference on the redox due to the strain introduced by local distortion. In this project, we explored a large number (~150) of perovskite compositions, which are listed in Tables 2 – 4). * All perovskite specimens have been synthesized through a high-throughput high-energy ball milling process, followed by the conventional sintering process. * XRD, SEM/EDS and TGA were performed to confirm the crystal structure, phase homogeneity and oxygen non-stoichiometry for compositionally complex perovskite oxides (CCPOs). * 110 compositions show single-phase from XRD * Unusual aliovalent doping effects in medium-entropy perovskite compositions. * V-shape relation between Δδ vs. x (La 1-x Sr x )(Mn 1/3 Fe 1/3 Ti 1/3 )O 3 * The highest reported hydrogen production for the CCPOs made in this project ( T re = 1350 ºC 30 min, T Ox = 1100 ºC 30 min) * B-site mixing (La 0.8 Sr 0.2 )(Mn 0.2 Fe 0.2 Co 0.4 Al 0.2 )O 3 : 89.97 ± 2.73 mmol H2 /mol oxide (395 ± 10 μmol/g oxide ) (i) No phase transformation during reactions when Co molar ratio is less than 61% (ii) Balance between intrinsic kinetics (oxygen surface exchange) and thermodynamics (oxygen non-stoichiometry) (iii) Preference of Co identified by in-situ XPS * A-site mixing (La 1/6 Pr 1/6 Nd 1/6 Gd 1/6 Ba 1/6 Sr1/6)MnO 3 : 98.48 mmol H2 /mol oxid e (~415 μmol/g oxide )

Unusual aliovalent doping effects on oxygen non-stoichiometry in medium-entropy compositionally complex perovskite oxides

Aliovalent doping of perovskite oxides can tune the oxygen vacancy formation energy. This work discovers normal vs. abnormal aliovalent doping effects on redox behaviors in medium-entropy compositionally complex perovskite oxides (CCPOs) (La 1–x Sr x )(Mn 1/3 Fe 1/3 Ti 1/3 )O 3–δ (LS_MFT) vs. (La 1–x Sr x )(Mn 1/3 Fe 1/3 Cr 1/3 )O 3–δ (LS_MFC). In the LS_MFC series, the oxygen non-stoichiometry range Δδ (= δ red – δ ox ) linearly depends on the Sr molar ratio x, while the LS_MFT series shows a V-shape dependence of Δδ on x. This unusual observation is investigated and explained based on the analysis of the energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) in STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In LS_MFC, Cr–L 2,3 , Mn–L 2,3 and Fe–L 2,3 peaks have a similar linear shift to higher energy with increasing x, which indicates higher oxidation states of Cr, Mn, and Fe with lower oxygen vacancy formation energies. In LS_MFT, the V-shape of the Δδ vs. x curve is caused by the stable Ti 4+ state and a V-shape Mn/Fe valency dependence on x. Furthermore, this study suggests the possible existence of different (including unexpected) coupled aliovalent doping effects in CCPOs with multiple B-site redox active elements.
