A remote sensing algorithm for vertically resolved cloud condensation nuclei number concentrations from airborne and spaceborne lidar observations

Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) are mediators of aerosol–cloud interactions (ACIs), contributing to the largest uncertainties in the understandings of global climate change. We present a novel remote-sensing-based algorithm that quantifies the vertically resolved CCN number concentrations (N CCN ) using aerosol optical properties measured by a multiwavelength lidar. The algorithm considers five distinct aerosol subtypes with bimodal size distributions. The inversion used the lookup tables developed in this study, based on the observations from the Aerosol Robotic Network, to efficiently retrieve optimal particle size distributions from lidar measurements. The method derives dry aerosol optical properties by implementing hygroscopic enhancement factors in lidar measurements. The retrieved optically equivalent particle size distributions and aerosol-type-dependent particle composition are utilized to calculate critical diameters using κ-Köhler theory and N CCN at six supersaturations ranging from 0.07 % to 1.0 %. Sensitivity analyses indicate that uncertainties in extinction coefficients and relative humidity greatly influence the retrieval error in N CCN . The potential of this algorithm is further evaluated by retrieving N CCN using airborne lidar from the NASA ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS (ORACLES) campaign and is validated against simultaneous measurements from the CCN counter. The independent validation with robust correlation demonstrates promising results. Furthermore, the N CCN has been retrieved for the first time using a proposed algorithm from spaceborne lidar – Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) – measurements. The application of this new capability demonstrates the potential for constructing a 3D CCN climatology at a global scale, which helps to better quantify ACI effects and thus reduce the uncertainty in aerosol climate forcing.

High-Entropy and Superstructure-Stabilized Layered Oxide Cathodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Layered transition metal oxides are appealing cathodes for sodium-ion batteries due to their overall advantages in energy density and cost. But their stabilities are usually compromised by the complicated phase transition and the oxygen redox, particularly when operating at high voltages, leading to poor structural stability and substantial capacity loss. Here, in this study, an integrated strategy combing the high-entropy design with the superlattice-stabilization to extend the cycle life and enhance the rate capability of layered cathodes is reported. It is shown that the as-prepared high-entropy Na 2/3 Li 1/6 Fe 1/6 Co 1/6 Ni 1/6 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode enables a superlattice structure with Li/transition metal ordering and delivers excellent electrochemical performance that is not affected by the presence of phase transition and oxygen redox. It achieves a high reversible capacity (171.2 mAh g –1 at 0.1 C), a high energy density (531 Wh kg –1 ), extended cycling stability (89.3% capacity retention at 1 C for 90 cycles and 63.7% capacity retention at 5 C after 300 cycles), and excellent fast-charging capability (78 mAh g –1 at 10 C). This strategy would inspire more rational designs that can be leveraged to improve the reliability of layered cathodes for secondary-ion batteries.

Tree-inspired lignin microrods-based composite heterogeneous nanochannels for ion transport and osmotic energy harvesting

One of the key processes of tree lignification is that lignin penetrates into the cell wall and fills in the cell wall framework, thereby increasing the hardness and hydrophobic of the tree channels, which is beneficial to consolidate and support the tree cell wall and water transport. Inspired by this natural process, we demonstrated a lignin-based nanofluidic heterogeneous membrane that closely mimics the channels in tree, which can realize ion transport function and effectively capture reverse electrodialysis. The membrane was synthesized by heating dealkaline lignin and PVA at 200 °C and this formed fusiform microrods and a closed-packed membrane. Simultaneously, this membrane composited with anodized aluminum (AAO) channels membrane at 200 °C to form asymmetric heterogeneous nanochannels membrane, which can transport counter-ions and harvest osmotic energy. This membrane implements ion current rectification in 0.1 M KCl electrolyte solution at pH 3 due to the confinement of pores and opposite surface charges in lignin-based heterogeneous nanochannel. An output power density of 0.97 W m- 2 is obtained under a 50-fold salinity gradient, which can be further improved to 1.19 W m -2 by increasing the salinity gradient from 50-fold to 500-fold. Accordingly, this nanofluidic membranes were prepared by using lignin, the key component in tree, which not only mimicked a crucial process of the water and ionic transport process of channels in tree, but also had the prospect in the field of osmotic energy harvesting.

Improved multiline HVDC circuit breakers with asymmetric conducting branches

Here, this paper proposes two improved multiline HVDC circuit breakers (DCBs) for HVDC grid applications, including type-1 improved multiline DCB and type-2 improved multiline DCB. The two improved DCBs draw on the core idea of extended H-bridge. m adjacent DC transmission lines share a single main breaker (MB) and surge arrester. Due to the extended H-bridge design, bidirectional current flow can be achieved by a unidirectional MB. An upper conducting branch and a lower conducting branch are connected to a DC line. The upper and lower conducting branches in the two improved multiline DCBs are asymmetric. The upper conducting branch of both two improved DCBs is formed by a load commutation switch (LCS) and an ultra-fast disconnector (UFD). The lower conducting branch of the type-1 improved scheme is composed of a diode and a UFD; and of the type-2 improved scheme is made up of diode stack. Compared with other DCBs, the proposed type-1 DCB and type-2 DCB are more cost effective. Among the five DCBs, the type-2 improved scheme requires the least number of individual switching actions. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed schemes are verified through simulation of a bipolar three-terminal HVDC grid in PSCAD/EMTDC.

High gravity, fed-batch ionic liquid based process for deconstructing biomass

In one aspect, the present invention provides methods for preparing a fermentation product. The methods include pre-treating a mixture of biomass and ionic liquid, wherein the ionic liquid comprises a choline cation and the biomass comprises polysaccharide and lignin. The methods further include forming hydrolysates from the introduction of glycoside hydrolase to the pre-treated mixture at conditions sufficient to produce a sugar composition mixture for fermentation steps. The present invention provides methods for loading biomass mixtures in a batch-fed process, wherein the biomass slurries can be loaded into water or a concentrated sugar composition for hydrolysate production. The methods can be performed in a one-pot process, wherein the ionic liquids are present in the mixtures throughout each step. Aspects of the invention provide compositions of sugar composition mixtures and fermentation product mixtures.

Aerosol Retrievals from Different Polarimeters During the ACEPOL Campaign Using a Common Retrieval Algorithm

In this paper, we present aerosol retrieval results from the ACEPOL (Aerosol Characterization from Polarimeter and Lidar) campaign, which was a joint initiative between NASA and SRON – the Netherlands Institute for Space Research. The campaign took place in October–November 2017 over the western part of the United States. During ACEPOL six different instruments were deployed on the NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft, including four multi-angle polarimeters (MAPs): SPEX airborne, the Airborne Hyper Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (AirHARP), the Airborne Multi-angle SpectroPolarimetric Imager (AirMSPI), and the Research Scanning Polarimeter (RSP). Also, two lidars participated: the High Spectral Resolution Lidar-2 (HSRL-2) and the Cloud Physics Lidar (CPL). Flights were conducted mainly for scenes with low aerosol load over land, but some cases with higher AOD were also observed. We perform aerosol retrievals from SPEX airborne, RSP (410–865 nm range only), and AirMSPI using the SRON aerosol retrieval algorithm and compare the results against AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) and HSRL-2 measurements (for SPEX airborne and RSP). All three MAPs compare well against AERONET for the aerosol optical depth (AOD), with a mean absolute error (MAE) between 0.014 and 0.024 at 440 nm. For the fine-mode effective radius the MAE ranges between 0.021 and 0.028 µm. For the comparison with HSRL-2 we focus on a day with low AOD (0.02–0.14 at 532 nm) over the California Central Valley, Arizona, and Nevada (26 October) as well as a flight with high AOD (including measurements with AOD>1.0 at 532 nm) over a prescribed forest fire in Arizona (9 November). For the day with low AOD the MAEs in AOD (at 532 nm) with HSRL-2 are 0.014 and 0.022 for SPEX and RSP, respectively, showing the capability of MAPs to provide accurate AOD retrievals for the challenging case of low AOD over land. For the retrievals over the smoke plume a reasonable agreement in AOD between the MAPs and HSRL-2 was also found (MAE 0.088 and 0.079 for SPEX and RSP, respectively), despite the fact that the comparison is hampered by large spatial variability in AOD throughout the smoke plume. A good comparison is also found between the MAPs and HSRL-2 for the aerosol depolarization ratio (a measure of particle sphericity), with an MAE of 0.023 and 0.016 for SPEX and RSP, respectively. Finally, SPEX and RSP agree very well for the retrieved microphysical and optical properties of the smoke plume.
