Probing nuclear structure with mean transverse momentum in relativistic isobar collisions

Transverse momentum (p⊥) generation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is sensitive to the initial geometry and the final-state bulk evolution. We demonstrate with hydrodynamic calculations that the mean p⊥ ratio (R $\langle p⊥ \rangle$ ) between the highly similar isobar $^{96}_{44}$RU + $^{96}_{44}$RU and $^{96}_{44}$Zr + $^{96}_{44}$Zr collisions is insensitive to the bulk evolution and remains sensitive to the small difference in the initial nuclear structure (neutron skin and deformation) between the Ru and Zr nuclei. Here, we further find that nuclear deformation can produce an anticorrelation between R $\langle p⊥ \rangle$ and eccentricity (or elliptic flow) in central collisions. These findings suggest that the R $\langle p⊥ \rangle$ between the isobar systems can be used to measure the neutron skin thickness and deformation parameters, which can, in turn, constrain the nuclear symmetry energy slope parameter.

Two- and three-particle nonflow contributions to the chiral magnetic effect measurement by spectator and participant planes in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Correlation measurements with respect to the spectator and participant planes in relativistic heavy ion collisions were proposed to extract the chiral magnetic effect (CME) from background dominated azimuthal correlators. Here, this paper investigates the effects of two- and three-particle nonflow correlations on the extracted CME signal fraction, f CME . It is found, guided by a multiphase transport (ampt) model and the heavy ion jet interaction generator (hijing) together with experimental data, that the nonflow effects amount to approximately (4 ± 5)% and (–5 ± 3)% without and with pseudorapidity gaps, respectively, in 20–50% centrality Au + Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV.

Measuring neutron skin by grazing isobaric collisions

Neutron skin thickness (Δr np ) of nuclei and the inferred nuclear symmetry energy are of critical importance to nuclear physics and astrophysics. It is traditionally measured by nuclear processes with significant theoretical uncertainties. We recently proposed an indirect measurement of the Δr np by charged hadron multiplicities in central isobaric collisions at relativistic energies, which are sensitive to nuclear densities. In this Letter, we propose a direct measurement of the Δr np by using net-charge multiplicities in ultra-peripheral (grazing) collisions of those isobars, under the assumption that they are simple superimposition of nucleon-nucleon interactions. Here, we illustrate this novel approach by the TRENTO and URQMD models.

Deciphering the R Ψ m correlator in search for the chiral magnetic effect in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is extensively studied in heavy-ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). An azimuthal correlator called R Ψ m was proposed to measure the CME. By observing the same R Ψ 2 and R Ψ 3 (convex) distributions from A Multi-Phase Transport (ampt) model, by contrasting data and model as well as large and small systems and by event shape engineering (ESE), a recent preprint (arXiv:2006.04251v1) from STAR suggests that the R Ψ m observable is sensitive to the CME signal and relatively insensitive to backgrounds, and their Au + Au data are inconsistent with known background contributions. Our ampt results contradict those from a recent preprint by STAR. Our toy model simulations demonstrate that R Ψ 2 is sensitive to both the CME signal and physics backgrounds. Toy model simulations of isobar collisions show similar centrality dependence and magnitudes for the relative R Ψ 2 strengths as well as the relative Δ γ strengths. We conclude that R Ψ 2 and the inclusive Δ γ are essentially the same.

Importance of non-flow background on the chiral magnetic wave search

We report an observable sensitive to the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) is the charge asymmetry dependence of the π - and π + anisotropic flow difference, Δv n (A ch ). We show that, due to non-flow correlations, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to Δv n (A ch ). The trivial slope contribution to the triangle flow difference Δv 3 (A ch ) can be negative if the non-flow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. This can explain the observed negative Δv 3 (A ch ) slope in the preliminary STAR data. We further find that the non-flow correlations give rise to additional backgrounds to the slope of Δv 2 (A ch ) from the competition among different pion sources and from the larger multiplicity dilution to π + (π - ) at positive (negative) A ch .

Probing the Neutron Skin with Ultrarelativistic Isobaric Collisions

Particle production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions depends on the details of the nucleon density distributions in the colliding nuclei. We demonstrate that the charged hadron multiplicity distributions in isobaric collisions at ultrarelativistic energies provide a novel approach to determine the poorly known neutron density distributions and thus the neutron skin thickness in finite nuclei, which can in turn put stringent constraints on the nuclear symmetry energy.

Complications in the interpretation of the charge-asymmetry-dependent π flow for the chiral magnetic wave

The charge asymmetry ($A_ch$) dependence of the $π^₋$ and $π^+$ elliptic flow difference, $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$, has been regarded as a sensitive observable for the possible chiral magnetic wave (CMW) in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this work, we first demonstrate that, due to nonflow backgrounds, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$. The trivial contribution to the slope of triangle flow difference $Δv_3( A_{\text{ch}})$ can be negative if the nonflow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. After eliminating the trivial term, we find that the nonflow between like-sign pairs gives rise to an additional positive slope to $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ because of the larger multiplicity dilution to $π^+$ ($π^₋$) at positive (negative) $A_{\text{ch}}$. We further find that the competition between different π sources can introduce another nontrivial linear-$A_{\text{ch}}$ term due to their different multiplicity fluctuations and anisotropic flows. We then study the effect of neutral cluster (resonance) decays as a mechanism for local charge conservation on the slope parameter of $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$. We find that the slope parameter is sensitive to the kinematics of those neutral clusters. Light resonances give positive slopes while heavy resonances give negative slopes. Local charge conservation from continuum cluster mass distribution can give a positive slope parameter comparable to experimental data. Our studies indicate that many non-CMW physics mechanisms can give rise to a $A_{\text{ch}}$-dependent $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ and the interpretation of $Δv_2(A_{\text{ch}})$ in terms of the CMW is delicate.
