Programmable intrusion detection for distributed energy resources in cyber–physical networked microgrids

We present a programmable intrusion detection method is presented to identify the malicious attacks to distributed energy resources (DERs) in the cyber-physical networked microgrids. The proposed method injects small programmable signals into the system and uses the response to identify abnormal conditions. Because of the low or even zero inertia induced by integrations of DER power-electronic-interfaces, microgrids have very limited resilience capability; and thus, being sensitive to attacks. One microgrid's malfunction caused by attacks can easily propagate to its neighboring systems when several microgrids are connected, leading to catastrophic electricity supply failures. Through the presented method, malicious intrusions can be effectively detected, located, and defended for securing microgrids. Theoretical derivations are provided to define the programmable detection rules. The detection rule is easy and flexible to update, making it difficult for attack actors to gain the knowledge of the detection rules, in order to avoid being detected. Numerical results on a cyber-physical networked microgrids system show that the proposed method is effective and efficient in precisely locating intrusion attacks to the microgrids system.

On-Device Lead Detention for Perovskite Solar Cells

As the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have reached above 25.5%, the commercialization of PSCs appears to be imminent due to its lower fabrication cost, simpler manufacturing processes, and larger processing area over Si-based solar cells that dominate the current photovoltaic (PV) market. While many efforts have focused on tackling the stability and scalability issues with promising advances, the potential lead (Pb) toxicity issue has remained a concern of PSCs. Unlike the metallic Pb, the Pb 2+ in perovskite generally exhibit high solubility in water. However, Pb 2+ has so far appeared to be a necessary component in all high-efficiency PSCs. Handful methods have been explored to mitigate the potential Pb2+ leaking issue, which can be generally categorized as physical encapsulation and our pioneering chemical absorption method, which was extended by others later. Since device damage is inevitable in outdoor conditions, physical encapsulation alone is not sufficient to mitigate the long-term risk of leakage of soluble Pb 2+ to the environment under severe weather conditions. As a result, the chemical absorption approach has recently attracted significant attention as a more effective solution to confine the potential lead leakage. Hence, it is of great value to develop durable and highly efficient Pb-absorbing components that can be conveniently mounted onto the standard PSC stack as an add-on accessory in line with the encapsulation of PSCs instead of modifying the standard device fabrication and/or device configuration.

Highly Active and Stable Palladium Catalysts on Novel Ceria–Alumina Supports for Efficient Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbons

Precious metal catalysts with superior low-temperature activity and excellent thermal stability are highly needed in environmental catalysis field. In this study, a novel two-step incipient wetness impregnation (T-IWI) method was developed for the fabrication of a unique and highly stable CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 support (CA-T). Pd anchored on CA-T exhibited a much higher low-temperature catalytic activity and superior thermal stability in carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) oxidations, compared to Pd anchored on conventional CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 (CA), which was prepared by a one-step IWI method. After aging treatment at 800 °C, the CO oxidation rate on Pd/CA-T (1.69 mmol/(g Pd s)) at 120 °C was 4.1 and 84.5 times of those on Pd/CA (0.41 mmol/(g Pd s)) and Pd/Al 2 O 3 (0.02 mmol/(g Pd s)), respectively. It was revealed that the CA-T support with well-controlled small CeO 2 particles (ca. 12 nm) possessed abundant defects for Pd anchoring, which created rich Pd-CeO 2 interfaces with strengthened interaction between Pd and CeO 2 where oxygen could be efficiently activated. This resulted in the significantly improved oxidation activity and thermal stability of Pd/CA-T catalysts. The T-IWI method developed herein can be applied as a universal approach to prepare highly stable metal oxide-alumina-based supports, which have broad application in environmental catalyst design, especially for automobile exhaust aftertreatment.

Conserved role of ATP synthase in mammalian cilia

Highlights: • ATP synthase localizes to cilia in mammalian cells. • ATP synthase is involved in ciliogenesis. • ATP synthase probably participates in polycystin signalling pathway. We previously found that ATP synthases localize to male-specific sensory cilia and control the ciliary response by regulating polycystin signalling in Caenorhabditis elegans. Herein, we discovered that the ciliary localization of ATP synthase is evolutionarily conserved in mammals. We showed that the ATP synthase subunit F1β is colocalized with the cilia marker acetylated α-tubulin in both mammalian renal epithelial cells (MDCK) and normal mouse cholangiocytes (NMCs). Treatment with ATP synthase inhibitor oligomycin impaired ciliogenesis in MDCK cells, and F1β was co-immunoprecipitated with PKD2 in mammalian cells. Our study provides evidence for the evolutionarily conserved localization of ATP synthase in cilia from worm to mammals. Defects in ATP synthase can lead to ciliary dysfunction, which may be a potential mechanism of polycystic kidney disease.

Thermodynamic modeling of the Ti-Nb-Sn system and its preliminary applications in aging precipitation and solidification simulations

Abstract Gasping the thermodynamic and phase diagram of the materials being studied is essential for further guiding the development process, like composition design, heat treatment optimization and so on. Nb and Sn are common alloying elements in Ti-based biomedical alloys. In this work, the Ti-Nb-Sn system has been thermodynamically assessed based on experimental phase equilibria. A self-consistent thermodynamic description for the Ti-Nb-Sn system including two ternary compounds Ti 3 Nb 3 Sn 2 and Ti 3 NbSn has been obtained. Based on the comparison between the calculated and experimental phase equilibria, the reliability of the presently obtained thermodynamic description has been verified. The influence of Nb and Sn contents on the precipitation temperature and amount of hcp α -Ti phase in bcc β -(Ti, Nb) has been investigated based on thermodynamic calculations. Results show that the increase of Nb or Sn content in Ti-based alloys would significantly reduce the precipitation amount and transformation temperature of hcp α -Ti phase in bcc β -(Ti, Nb) and the influence of Nb content is more effective than that of Sn. The solidified phases in several as-cast alloys have been thermodynamically predicted based on Scheil solidification simulations. The presently developed thermodynamic description of the Ti-Nb-Sn system can serve as a sub-ternary one in the thermodynamic database for multicomponent Ti-based biomedical alloys.

Simultaneous Electrospinning and Electrospraying for the Preparation of a Precursor Membrane Containing Hydrothermally Generated Biochar Particles to Produce the Value-Added Product of Carbon Nanofibrous Felt

Biochar is a byproduct generated from the hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass, such as corn stover, in an anaerobic environment. This work aims to convert biochar into a value-added product of carbon nanofibrous felt. First, the biochar-containing precursor membrane was prepared from simultaneous electrospinning and electrospraying. After thermal stabilization in air and carbonization in argon, the obtained precursor membrane was converted into a mechanically flexible and robust carbon nanofibrous felt. Electrochemical results revealed that the biochar-derived carbon nanofibrous felt might be a good candidate as a supercapacitor electrode with a good rate capability and high kinetic performance.

On-device lead absorbing tapes for sustainable perovskite solar cells

Perovskite solar cells are a promising technology that could facilitate and accelerate the energy transition to a sustainable future. However, the toxicity of Pb remains one of the obstacles impeding their commercialization. Here we apply on-device tapes to absorb leaked lead from damaged devices. Furthermore, our chemical approach can capture over 99.9% of leakage without compromising the performance and operation.

Dopants, Isotope, Pressure and Lead Sequestration for Hybrid Perovskite Materials

Dopants, Isotope, Pressure and Lead Sequestration for Hybrid Perovskite Materials The soaring power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solution process-based organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites solar cells (PSCs) assures their membership in the competitive photovoltaic technologies. However, stability, toxicity and scalability are the three grand challenges that still impedes the market adoption of PSCs. Careful fundamental studies on how their fascinating optoelectronic properties is related to their structures may provide leads to these challenges and also spin off new applications. In this talk, I will present our recent study on the dopants, isotope and pressure effects on hybrid perovskite materials (HPMs). We discovered an interesting bipolar electron injection in LiCl-doped MAPbI 3 -based UV detectors that respond to the energy of UV photons in distinguished photocurrents polarity. We also investigated how the underline interaction between the mass of the cationic rotors and the inorganic lattice in HPMs by isotope effect. In-situ synchrotron X-ray and time-resolved photoluminescence revealed abnormal optoelectronic properties of HPMs by modulating their bond angles and bond lengths using high pressure techniques. Moreover, I will also discuss our new technology to sequestrate lead leakage on perovskite solar cells that can absorb >99% leaked Pb ions under severe device damge while without sacrificing the PCE under normal operational conditions.

On-device lead sequestration for perovskite solar cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) face obstacles on their way towards commercialization. Potential issues with lead toxicity and leaching from devices remain relatively unexplored. It is desirable to develop strategies that avoid potential Pb leakage to the environment, although enhanced physical encapsulation can lessen Pb leakage from devices when subjected to mild environmental damage. We present a new chemical approach for on-device sequestration (>96%) of lead leakage caused by severe device damage without sacrificing the efficiency and stability of PSCs under normal operation.

Highly selective electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction to ethanol by metallic clusters dynamically formed from atomically dispersed copper

Direct electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to ethanol offers a promising strategy of lowering CO 2 emission while storing energy from renewable electricity. However, current electrocatalysts offer only limited selectivity toward ethanol. Here we report a copper catalyst synthesized by a unique Cu-Li amalgm method over a commercial carbon support that achieved Faradaic efficiency (FE) higher than 91% at -0.7 V (RHE) and the active potential as low as -0.4 V (RHE) during direct electrocatalytic CO 2 -to-ethanol conversion. The catalyst also demonstrated stability over an extended period of operation. A strong correlation between the catalytic selectivity and the initial Cu atoms dispersion was found and Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy identified a dynamic and reversible transformation from atomically dispersed copper atoms to Cu n (n = 3 and 4) under the electrochemical reaction. Frist-principles calculations further elucidate the possible catalytic mechanism of CO 2 reduction over Cu n .

Direct Observation of Bandgap Oscillations Induced by Optical Phonons in Hybrid Lead Iodi.de Perovskites

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites such as methylammonium lead iodide have emerged as promising semiconductors for energy-relevant applications. The interactions between charge carriers and lattice vibrations, giving rise to polarons, have been invoked to explain some of their extraordinary optoelectronic properties. Here, time-resolved optical spectroscopy is performed, with off-resonant pumping and electronic probing, to examine several representative lead iodide perovskites. The temporal oscillations of electronic bandgaps induced by coherent lattice vibrations are reported, which is attributed to antiphase octahedral rotations that dominate in the examined 3D and 2D hybrid perovskites. The off-resonant pumping scheme permits a simplified observation of changes in the bandgap owing to the A(g) vibrational mode, which is qualitatively different from vibrational modes of other symmetries and without increased complexity of photogenerated electronic charges. The work demonstrates a strong correlation between the lead-iodide octahedral framework and electronic transitions, and provides further insights into the manipulation of coherent optical phonons and related properties in hybrid perovskites on ultrafast timescales.

On-device lead sequestration for perovskite solar cells

Perovskite solar cells, as an emerging high-efficiency and low-cost photovoltaic technology face challenges on their way towards commercialization. Substantial improvements have been made to device stability but potential issues with lead toxicity and leaching from devices remain relatively unexplored. The potential for lead leakage could be perceived as an environmental and public health risk when using perovskite solar cells in building-integrated photovoltaics. Here we present a chemical approach for on-device sequestration of more than 96 per cent of lead leakage caused by severe device damage. A coating of lead-absorbing material is applied to the front and back sides of the device stack. On the glass side of the front transparent conducting electrode, we use a transparent lead-absorbing molecular film containing phosphonic acid groups that bind strongly to lead. On the back (metal) electrode side, we place a polymer film blended with lead-chelating agents between the metal electrode and a standard photovoltaic packing film. The lead-absorbing films on both sides swell to absorb the lead, rather than dissolve, when subjected to water soaking, thus retaining structural integrity for easy collection of lead after damage.
