Vibrational study of CO, O 2 , and H 2 Adsorbed on the CoCrFeNi (110) High Entropy Alloy Surface

The vibrational properties of CO, O 2 , and H 2 molecularly or dissociatively adsorbed on a CoCrFeNi(110) surface have been probed using highresolution energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and modeled using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Large (~20 mm3) single-crystal, quaternary face-centered cubic CoCrFeNi was synthesized via a modified Czochralski technique. We show strong evidence that CO adsorbs primarily on bridge and on-top sites in compositionally varied local environments, which reflect the random, multielemental surface composition inherent in a high entropy alloy. A variation of adsorption sites is also found with oxygen, which exhibits two broad groups of modes. Comparison to previous photoemission and theoretical studies suggests that the higher energy modes consist primarily of local CrO x species, while the lower energy modes are due to oxygen atoms adsorbed on other metal sites. Unlike CO and O 2 , HREELS upon H 2 adsorption shows only two much narrower modes and is consistent with atomic adsorption on 3-fold hollow sites. The hypothesized adsorption sites for all three species are directly corroborated by our DFT calculations.

Tuning the Intermolecular Electrostatic Interaction toward High-Efficiency and Low-Cost Organic Solar Cells

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved much progress with rapidly increasing power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). It should be noted that the top-performance OSCs are generally consisted of active materials with complex chemical structures, resulting in high costs. Here, combining the material design and morphology control, high-efficiency OSCs are fabricated by a low-cost donor: acceptor blend. A completely non-fused electron acceptor named Tz is designed and synthesized via introducing thiazole units on both sides of a bithiophene core, which shows an outstanding PCE of 13.3% with a typical polythiophene donor. More importantly, optimization guidelines are presented to get excellent morphology for low-cost donor:acceptor systems. Three polythiophenes are selected, poly(3-hexylthiophene) and its two derivatives with electron-withdrawing substitutions (PDCBT and PDCBT-2F), as donors to fabricate the cell devices. The computational and experimental data reveal that decreasing the electrostatic interaction between polythiophene and Tz is the key to getting a suppressed miscibility and thus a high phase purity. Finally, this study provides insight into the molecular design and donor:acceptor matching requirements for high-efficiency and low-cost OSCs.

Acetate formation on metals via CH 4 carboxylation by CO 2 : A DFT study

Here, density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate CH 4 activation and coupling to CO 2 forming C 2 carboxylates such as acetate on the close-packed (111) or (0001) surfaces of ten mid-to-late transition and coinage metals (Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au). Consistent with the literature, the activation energy (E a ) for the initial C-H bond scission in CH 4 is mild, being ca. 1 eV or less on all but the coinage metals, of which Ag exhibits the highest E a at 2.13 eV, followed by Au and Cu. E a for the CH 3 -CO 2 coupling step is 0.8 ~ 1.1 eV on Co, Ru, Rh, and Ag, 1.2 ~ 1.5 eV on Ni, Cu, Pd, and Ir, and 1.8 ~ 2.1 eV on Pt and Au. While the two E a are comparable for several metals in terms of DFT total energies, free energy analysis indicates CH 3 -CO 2 coupling to be much more rate-limiting than CH 4 activation. Overcoming it would require over 800 K even on the most active of the metals considered, Ru, which makes the formation of acetate not feasible on the monometallic metal surfaces. Instead, we propose that single atom alloys based on early transition metals doped into a host metal such as Ni(111) could be viable catalysts. The dopant sites serve to stabilize the transition state of C-C coupling while Ni sites continue to activate CH 4 , thereby significantly lowering the required temperature for acetate formation.

Hydrolysis of Acetamide on Low-Index CeO 2 Surfaces: Ceria as a Deamidation and General De-esterification Catalyst

Using DFT calculations and acetamide as the main example, we show that ceria is a potential catalyst for the hydrolysis of amide and similar bonds. The overall reaction is endergonic in the gas phase, yielding acetic acid and ammonia, but is slightly exergonic in the aqueous phase, which facilitates ionization of the products (CH 3 COO – and NH 4 + ). Neighboring Ce and O sites on the CeO 2 (111), (110), and (100) facets are conducive to the formation of an activated metastable tetrahedral intermediate (TI) complex, followed by C–N bond scission. With van der Waals and solvation effects taken into account, the overall reaction energetics is found to be most favorable on the (111) facet as desorption of acetic acid is much more uphill energetically on (110) and (100). We further suggest that the Ce–O–Ce sites on ceria surfaces can activate X(=Y)–Z type bonds in amides, amidines, and carboxylate and phosphate esters, among many others that we term “generalized esters”. A Brønsted-Evans–Polanyi relationship is identified correlating the stability of the transition and final states of the X–Z generalized ester bond scission. A simple descriptor (ΣΔχ) based on the electronegativity of the atoms that constitute the bond (X, Y, Z) versus those of the catalytic site (O, Ce, Ce) captures the trend in the stability of the transition state of generalized ester bond scission and suggests a direction for modifying ceria for targeting specific organic substrates.

Thermal stability and protective properties of phenylphosphonic acid on Cu(111)

Phenylphosphonic acid (PPA) adsorbed on Cu(111) has been studied by synchrotron radiation-based techniques in combination with density functional theory calculations. Here, the dehydrogenated phenylphosphonic acid molecule (PP) strongly bound in a tridentate geometry through oxygen atoms to Cu(111) is shown to be the dominant surface species in the temperature range 150–300 °C. The stable PP adlayer substantially protects the Cu(111) surface from oxidation during exposure to ambient conditions. Thermal treatment of the PPA adlayer at 375 °C initiates molecular decomposition through several channels: P–O bond scission forming C 6 H 5 PO 2 ; C–P bond scission forming phenyl and PO 3 ; and C–H bond scission forming C 6 H 4 PO 3 . All three reaction steps have activation barriers of 1.7–1.8 eV. Small products such as O, H, and phenyl can immediately react further and desorb, while the remaining phosphonate species undergo condensation. After annealing at a higher temperature, the phosphonate group is further reduced from oxygen-rich to phosphorus-rich species, which form the majority of remaining adsorbates after 500 °C treatment.

Theoretical investigation of surface chemical reactivity of compositionally disordered multi-metallic alloys

Alloys are widely used in both academic and industrial research as heterogeneous catalysts for accelerating technologically important reactions ranging from hydrocarbon reforming, selective hydrogenation, to electrochemical reactions involving hydrogen and oxygen that are fundamental and indispensable to a sustainable future energy infrastructure. Most basic catalysis research has been limited to combinations of two elements that are usually ordered in some manner at the nanoscale because doing so allows observable results to be easily rationalized. It however leaves a huge material space consisting of multi metallic, compositionally disordered alloys unexplored. This research demonstrates a viable theoretical approach combining different types of first principles calculations (including Green’s function-based Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker coherent potential approximation (KKR–CPA) and planewave-based density functional theory) to enable the surface chemical reactivity of compositionally complex alloy surfaces to be investigated. We demonstrate the approach by investigating hydrogen adsorption and evolution on two types of compositionally disordered alloys: a quaternary CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy, and binary Pt-3d base metal alloys.

HIF1α promotes tumor chemoresistance via recruiting GDF15-producing TAMs in colorectal cancer

Chemoresistance is a tremendous challenge to efficacy of systemic chemotherapy which is the preferred treatment for the advanced CRC patients. More tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are recruited into the CRC tumor under chemotherapy, which are highly implicated in the chemoresistance development, but the underlying molecular mechanism is unclear. Here, we present that activated HIF1α signaling in CRC cells under chemotherapy drives the expression of HMGB1to promotes macrophage infiltration and in turn chemoresistance development. Chemotherapeutic treatment with 5-FU leads to increased recruitment of macrophages into tumors, which display tumor-protective alternative activation. Mechanistically, tumor HIF1α signaling activated by chemo-induced ROS drives the transcription of HMGB1 to promote more macrophage infiltration into CRC tumor. Furthermore, high levels of GDF15 produced by TAMs impair the chemosensitity of tumor cells via enhancing fatty acids β-oxidation. Together, our current study reveals a new insight into the cross-talking between tumor cells and immune cells, and provides novel drug targets for clinic treatments for CRC.

Low Temperature Aggregation Transitions in N3 and Y6 Acceptors Enable Double‐Annealing Method That Yields Hierarchical Morphology and Superior Efficiency in Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells

Abstract Thermal transition of organic solar cells (OSCs) constituent materials are often insufficiently researched, resulting in trial‐and‐error rather than rational approaches to annealing strategies to improve domain purity to enhance the power conversion efficiency. Despite the potential utility, little is known about the thermal transitions of the modern high‐performance acceptors Y6 and N3. Here, by using an optical method, it is discovered that the acceptor N3 has a clear solid‐state aggregation transition at 82 °C. This unusually low transition not only explains prior optimization protocols, but the transition informs and enables a double‐annealing method that can fine‐tune aggregation and the device morphology. Compared with 16.6% efficiency for PM6:N3:PC 71 BM control devices, higher efficiency of 17.6% is obtained through the improved protocol. Morphology characterization with x‐ray scattering methods reveals the formation of a multilength scale morphology. Moreover, the double‐annealing method is illustrated and easily transferred and validated with Y6‐based devices, using the transition of Y6 at 102 °C. As a result, the PCE improved from 16.0% to 16.8%. Design of high‐performance acceptors with yet lower aggregation transitions might be required for OSCs to successfully transition to low thermal budget industrial processing methods where annealing temperatures on plastic substrates have to be kept low.

Hydrogen Adsorption on Ordered and Disordered Pt-Ni Alloys

The bulk properties and chemical reactivity of disordered Pt-Ni alloys in the A1 ( fcc ) structure are investigated herein using different methods: Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA), Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker Coherent Potential Approximation (KKR-CPA), and large explicit supercells generated using Super-Cell Random Approximates (SCRAPs). While VCA predicts lattice constants that closely follow Vegard’s law, the large supercells and KKR-CPA predict lattice constants that are consistently larger than Vegard’s law. KKR-CPA results closely agree with those from the large supercells for the disordered alloys, producing similar projected density of states and magnetic moment across the composition range. For instance, while VCA predicts the disordered alloys to be non-magnetic at a Pt concentration ( x Pt ) ≥ 0.5, KKR-CPA and SCRAPs predict the disordered alloys to remain ferromagnetic to higher Pt concentrations. As x Pt decreases, the adsorption of H becomes more exothermic on bulk-terminated (111) surfaces but less exothermic on Pt monolayer-terminated (111) surfaces due largely to strain effects. (111) surfaces cut from the large supercells predict average H adsorption energies on the disordered alloys similar to those on the ordered phases of the same compositions, while VCA predicts H adsorption to be more exothermic.
