Flat bands and nontrivial topological physics are two important topics of condensed matter physics. With a unique stacking configuration analogous to the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model, rhombohedral graphite (RG) is a potential candidate for realizing both flat bands and nontrivial topological physics. Here, in this study, we report experimental evidence of topological flat bands (TFBs) on the surface of bulk RG, which are topologically protected by bulk helical Dirac nodal lines via the bulk-boundary correspondence. Moreover, upon in situ electron doping, the surface TFBs show a splitting with exotic doping evolution, with an order-of-magnitude increase in the bandwidth of the lower split band, and pinning of the upper band near the Fermi level. These experimental observations together with Hartree–Fock calculations suggest that correlation effects are important in this system. Our results demonstrate RG as a platform for investigating the rich interplay between nontrivial band topology, correlation effects, and interaction-driven symmetry-broken states.
An additional insulating layer between the electrode and semiconductor is beneficial to reduce the interfacial coupling and build two-dimensional (2D) Schottky contacts. Here, an intralayer strategy was proposed by using metallic 2D Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (BSCCO) as contacts on 2D semiconductors. Inside a BSCCO monolayer, a conductive layer is sandwiched between insulating layers. Thus, the BSCCO contact has its own insulating layer, which is ultra-thin, single crystalline, and of high quality. This native layer could reduce the metal-induced gap state and thus weaken the interfacial Fermi level pinning effect. Such 2D Schottky diodes thus have barrier heights of 300 mV and a rectification ratio of 104. Furthermore, 2D metal-semiconductor field-effect transistors with BSCCO Schottky gate have a high on-off ratio, low leakage current, and low subthreshold swing value near the theoretical limit. The intralayer structure offers a new approach to improve the 2D Schottky junctions and has prospects in 2D electronics and optoelectronics.
Van der Waals superlattices are important for tailoring the electronic structures and properties of layered materials. Here we report the superconducting properties and electronic structure of a natural van der Waals superlattice (PbSe) 1.14 NbSe 2 . Anisotropic superconductivity with a transition temperature T c = 5.6 ± 0.1 K, which is higher than monolayer NbSe 2 , is revealed by transport measurements on high-quality samples. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements reveal the two-dimensional electronic structure and a charge transfer of 0.43 electrons per NbSe 2 unit cell from the blocking PbSe layer. In addition, polarization-dependent ARPES measurements reveal a significant circular dichroism with opposite contrast at K and K' valleys, suggesting a significant spin-orbital coupling and distinct orbital angular momentum. In conclusion, our work suggests natural van der Waals superlattice as an effective pathway for achieving intriguing properties distinct from both the bulk and monolayer samples.
Acetic acid (AC) hydrolysis has been reported to prepare xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from poplar. However, the influence of AC hydrolysis on the lignin structure changes is not clear, which is important for the following enzymatic hydrolysis of poplar. Herein, AC was used to produce XOS, and cellulase adsorption on cellulolytic enzyme lignin (CEL) from AC-hydrolyzed poplar and its inhibitory effect on two commercial cellulase preparations were investigated. AC hydrolysis gave a XOS yield of 39.8% from poplar. After AC hydrolysis at 170 °C, the hydrophobicity and ζ-potential of CEL decreased to 2.3 L/g and 14.8 mV, respectively. The adsorption strength of CTec2 on CEL samples did not increase by AC hydrolysis, and the inhibitory effect of CEL on Celluclast 1.5L and β-glucosidase was observed, but not on CTec2. CEL samples improved the lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) activity of the enzymatic hydrolysis by CTec2. After CEL samples were added in enzymatic hydrolysis, the free filter paper activity of Celluclast 1.5L and β-G retained in the enzymatic hydrolysate decreased from 60.5 to 29.3–42.9%. The addition of CEL samples in enzymatic hydrolysis could not decrease the free filter paper activity of CTec2 retained in the enzymatic hydrolysate. In the enzymatic hydrolysis with CEL samples, higher glucose yields were obtained by CTec2 than those by Celluclast 1.5L and β-glucosidase. This work will help to understand the structure and inhibitory effects of AC-CELs and guide the development of AC hydrolysis for the production of XOS and monosaccharides from poplar.
An integrated acetic acid based one-pot protic ionic liquid pretreatment and saccharification enables the near full conversion of poplar polysaccharides.

Abstract Objectives To investigate the neuroimaging characteristics of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) in patients with bipolar disorder (BP) experiencing depressive episodes with and without AVHs, and alterations in those characteristics after transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Methods For a baseline pilot study, we recruited 80 patients with BP and depressive status (40 with and 40 without AVHs), and 40 healthy controls (HCs). Their global functional connectivity density (gFCD) was screened by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Voxel‐wise one‐way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted to detect intergroup differences in gFCD. In a follow‐up study, the effects of 5 weeks of tDCS augmentation treatment on clinical symptoms and gFCD were assessed in the 40 BP patients with AVHs. Results Compared to HCs, BP patients with and without AVHs exhibited increased gFCD in the central parietal lobe, insular lobe, and middle cingulate cortex, with decreased gFCD in the posterior parietal cortex, lateral prefrontal cortex, and occipital lobe (all bilateral). Only patients with AVHs showed increased gFCD in the Broca and Wernicke regions, and decreased gFCD in the hippocampus (all bilateral). After 5 weeks of tDCS, AVHs were slightly alleviated and gFCD abnormalities in the hippocampus were mildly attenuated. Conclusions Patients with BP and AVHs showed disturbances in the brain's communication capacity mainly in the left frontoparietal network, control network, and memory circuitry. Five weeks of tDCS alleviated AVHs slightly, without improving depressive symptoms, and attenuated hippocampal gFCD alterations in these patients.
