Giant Topological Hall Effect in van der Waals Heterostructures of CrTe 2 /Bi 2 Te 3

Discoveries of the interfacial topological Hall effect (THE) provide an ideal platform for exploring the physics arising from the interplay between topology and magnetism. The interfacial topological Hall effect is closely related to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at an interface and topological spin textures. However, it is difficult to achieve a sizable THE in heterostructures due to the stringent constraints on the constituents of THE heterostructures, such as strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we report the observation of a giant THE signal of 1.39 mu Omega.cm in the van der Waals heterostructures of CrTe 2 /Bi 2 Te 3 fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy, a prototype of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet (FM)/topological insulator (TI). This large magnitude of THE is attributed to an optimized combination of 2D ferromagnetism in CrTe 2 , strong SOC in Bi 2 Te 3 , and an atomically sharp interface. Furthermore, our work reveals CrTe 2 /Bi 2 Te 3 as a convenient platform for achieving large interfacial THE in hybrid systems, which could be utilized to develop quantum science and high-density information storage devices.

Tuning 2D magnetism in Fe 3+X GeTe 2 films by element doping

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials have been discovered with tunable magnetism and orbital-driven nodal-line features. Controlling the 2D magnetism in exfoliated nanoflakes via electric/magnetic fields enables a boosted Curie temperature (T C ) or phase transitions. One of the challenges, however, is the realization of high T C 2D magnets that are tunable, robust and suitable for large scale fabrication. Here, we report molecular-beam epitaxy growth of wafer-scale Fe 3+X GeTe 2 films with T C above room temperature. By controlling the Fe composition in Fe 3+X GeTe 2 , a continuously modulated T C in a broad range of 185–320 K has been achieved. This widely tunable T C is attributed to the doped interlayer Fe that provides a 40% enhancement around the optimal composition X = 2. We further fabricated magnetic tunneling junction device arrays that exhibit clear tunneling signals. Our results show an effective and reliable approach, i.e. element doping, to producing robust and tunable ferromagnetism beyond room temperature in a large-scale 2D Fe 3+X GeTe 2 fashion.

Room-temperature intrinsic ferromagnetism in epitaxial CrTe 2 ultrathin films

While the discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnets opens the door for fundamental physics and next-generation spintronics, it is technically challenging to achieve the room-temperature ferromagnetic (FM) order in a way compatible with potential device applications. Here in this paper, we report the growth and properties of single- and few-layer CrTe 2 , a van der Waals (vdW) material, on bilayer graphene by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Intrinsic ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature (TC) up to 300 K, an atomic magnetic moment of ~0.21 μ B /Cr and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) constant (K u ) of 4.89 × 10 5 erg/cm 3 at room temperature in these few-monolayer films have been unambiguously evidenced by superconducting quantum interference device and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. This intrinsic ferromagnetism has also been identified by the splitting of majority and minority band dispersions with ~0.2 eV at Г point using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The FM order is preserved with the film thickness down to a monolayer (T C ~ 200 K), benefiting from the strong PMA and weak interlayer coupling. The successful MBE growth of 2D FM CrTe 2 films with room-temperature ferromagnetism opens a new avenue for developing large-scale 2D magnet-based spintronics devices.

Enhancement of the spin–orbit torque efficiency in W/Cu/CoFeB heterostructures via interface engineering

Here, the spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance signal and the spin Hall magnetoresistance induced by the spin Hall effect of W/Cu/CoFeB heterostructures with different Cu layer thicknesses (t Cu ) have been systemically studied. The effective spin mixing conductance $g^{↑↓}_{eff}$, the interfacial spin transparency T, and the real spin–orbit torque efficiency ( J s J c ) real show a significant increase compared to the W/CoFeB heterostructure. ( J s J c ) real reaches its maximum of ~0.54, increased up to ~50% at the optimized tCu ~ 0.52 nm according to our theoretical prediction. More importantly, the intrinsic spin Hall angle of W, $θ^{int}_{SH}$ ~ 0.79 ± 0.20, has also been obtained after the correction of the inverse spin Hall effect and T. This suggests that the Cu insertion improves the interface quality and, therefore, assists the spin transport in the heterostructures, which potentially improves the performance of next-generation spintronic devices.
