Lattice realizations of topological defects in the critical (1+1)-d three-state Potts model

Topological/perfectly-transmissive defects play a fundamental role in the analysis of the symmetries of two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs). In the present work, spin chain regularizations for these defects are proposed and analyzed in the case of the three-state Potts CFT. In particular, lattice versions for all the primitive defects are presented, with the remaining defects obtained from the fusion of the primitive ones. The defects are obtained by introducing modified interactions around two given sites of an otherwise homogeneous spin chain with periodic boundary condition. The various primitive defects are topological on the lattice except for one, which is topological only in the scaling limit. The lattice models are analyzed using a combination of exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group techniques. Low-lying energy spectra for different defect Hamiltonians as well as entanglement entropy of blocks located symmetrically around the defects are computed. The latter provides a convenient way to compute the g-function which characterizes various defects. Finally, the eigenvalues of the line operators in the “crossed channel” and fusion of different defect lines are also analyzed. The results are all in agreement with expectations from conformal field theory.

Social support and cognitive function in Chinese older adults who experienced depressive symptoms: is there an age difference?

Objective This study examined the moderating effect of overall social support and the different types of social support on cognitive functioning in depressed older adults. We also investigated whether the moderating effect varied according to age. Methods A total of 2,500 older adults (≥60 years old) from Shanghai, China were enrolled using a multistage cluster sampling method. Weighted linear regression and multiple linear regression was utilized to analyze the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive function and to explore its differences in those aged 60–69, 70–79, and 80 years and above. Results After adjusting for covariates, the results indicated that overall social support (β = 0.091, p = 0.043) and support utilization (β = 0.213, p < 0.001) moderated the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive function. Support utilization reduced the possibility of the cognitive decline in depressed older adults aged 60–69 years (β = 0.310, p < 0.001) and 80 years and above (β = 0.199, p < 0.001), while objective support increased the possibility of cognitive decline in depressed older people aged 70–79 years (β = −0.189, p < 0.001). Conclusion Our findings highlight the buffering effects of support utilization on cognitive decline in depressed older adults. We suggest that age-specific measures should be taken when providing social support to depressed older adults in order to reduce the deterioration of cognitive function.

Low-loss interconnects for modular superconducting quantum processors

Low-loss superconducting aluminium cables and on-chip impedance transformers can be used to link qubit modules and create superconducting quantum computing networks with high-fidelity intermodule state transfer. Scaling is now a key challenge in superconducting quantum computing. One solution is to build modular systems in which smaller-scale quantum modules are individually constructed and calibrated and then assembled into a larger architecture. This, however, requires the development of suitable interconnects. Here we report low-loss interconnects based on pure aluminium coaxial cables and on-chip impedance transformers featuring quality factors of up to 8.1 x 10 5 , which is comparable with the performance of our transmon qubits fabricated on a single-crystal sapphire substrate. We use these interconnects to link five quantum modules with intermodule quantum state transfer and Bell state fidelities of up to 99%. To benchmark the overall performance of the processor, we create maximally entangled, multiqubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. The generated intermodule four-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state exhibits 92.0% fidelity. We also entangle up to 12 qubits in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state with 55.8 ± 1.8% fidelity, which is above the genuine multipartite entanglement threshold of 1/2.
