LLNL-LDRD-Final report

The main focus of this study is the X-ray spectroscopy and complementary modeling characterization of the range of perovskite materials. Specific areas covered in this study include: • Quantitative characterization of individual (both CB and VB) band edge movement as a function of Sn concentration; • The effects of creating an interface with the charge transport layer and back contact on both the interfacial bonding and unoccupied band structure – i.e., how does the interfacial eDOS evolve when the interface is assembled; • How does this interface change (local bonding, CB edge) evolve with degradation – this includes depth profiling; • Additional insights from the spectroscopy – e.g., the pathway of degradation (Sn(II) oxide formation to a significant depth before Sn(IV) oxide formation, etc.), do different charge transport layers have distinct properties in slowing degradation, etc.

Developing an Interactive OpenMP Book with Large Language Models

Abstract. This paper presents an approach to authoring a textbook titled Interactive OpenMP Programming with the assistance of Large Language Models (LLMs). The writing process utilized state-of-the-art LLMs, including Gemini Pro 1.5, Claude 3, and ChatGPT-4, to generate the initial structure and outline of the book, as well as the initial content for specific chapters. This content included detailed descriptions of individual OpenMP constructs and practical programming examples. The outline and content have then undergone extensive manual revisions to meet our book goals. In this paper, we report our findings about the capabilities and limitations of these LLMs. We address critical questions concerning the necessity of textbook resources and the effectiveness of LLMs in creating fundamental and practical programming content. Our findings suggest that while LLMs offer significant advantages in generating textbook content, they require careful integration with traditional educational methodologies to ensure depth, accuracy, and pedagogical effectiveness. The Interactive OpenMP Programming book is developed with the framework of Jupyter Book, enabling the execution of code within the book from the web browser, providing instant feedback and a dynamic learning experience that stands in contrast to traditional educational resources. The book represents a significant step towards modernizing programming education, offering insights into practical strategies for generating the textbook through advanced AI tools.

Coherent Transfer of Lattice Entropy via Extreme Nonlinear Phononics in Metal Halide Perovskites

Entropy transfer in metal halide perovskites, characterized by significant lattice anharmonicity and low stiffness, underlies the remarkable properties observed in their optoelectronic applications, ranging from solar cells to lasers. The conventional view of this transfer involves stochastic processes occurring within a thermal bath of phonons, where the lattice arrangement and energy flow from higher- to lower-frequency modes. Here, we unveil a comprehensive chronological sequence detailing a conceptually distinct coherent transfer of entropy in a prototypical perovskite CH 3 NH 3 Pbl 3 . The terahertz periodic modulation imposes vibrational coherence into electronic states, leading to the emergence of mixed (vibronic) quantum beat between approximately 3 and 0.3 THz. We highlight a well-structured bidirectional time-frequency transfer of these diverse phonon modes, each developing at different times and transitioning from high to low frequencies from 3 to 0.3 THz, before reversing direction and ascending to around 0.8 THz. First-principles molecular dynamics simulations disentangle a complex web of coherent-phononic coupling pathways and identify the salient roles of the initial modes in shaping entropy evolution at later stages. Capitalizing on coherent entropy transfer and dynamic anharmonicity presents a compelling opportunity to exceed the fundamental thermodynamic (Shockley-Queisser) limit of photoconversion efficiency and to pioneer novel optoelectronic functionalities. A third order Runge-Kutta algorithm on a manifold

A third order Runge-Kutta type algorithm is described with the property that it preserves certain geometric structures. In particular, if the algorithm is initialized on a Lie group, then the resulting iterates remain on the Lie group.

On the numeric integration of dynamic attitude equations

We describe new types of numerical integration algorithms developed by the authors. The main aim of the algorithms is to numerically integrate differential equations which evolve on geometric objects, such as the rotation group. The algorithms provide iterates which lie on the prescribed geometric object, either exactly, or to some prescribed accuracy, independent of the order of the algorithm. This paper describes applications of these algorithms to the evolution of the attitude of a rigid body.
