Enhancing water and oxygen transport through electrode engineering for AEM water electrolyzers

Anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) can accelerate the deployment of more efficient and affordable hydrogen production solutions. Here, electrode structure is shown to affect water back-diffusion and oxygen transport, which, in return, governs overpotential behaviors in AEMWEs. Measurements indicate that electrode with copious catalytic sites produces water close to the AEM, creating a higher water gradient and driving water back-diffusion, which improves membrane hydration and mass transport. In situ measurement reveals a high pH gradient near the anode surface, which affects anode kinetics. Operando measurement shows reduced oxygen accumulation when decoupling oxygen production and transport on anode. Catalyst ink rheology and stability are tuned with additives to realize scalable fabrication of electrodes with enhanced transport features, allowing AEMWE to operate at 2 A cm−2 for over 1,000+ h at a 2.3 μV h−1 degradation rate. Analysis during and post-durability provides insights into degradation mechanisms. This work demonstrates an electrode design strategy for efficient and durable AEMWEs.

Solar-driven selective conversion of millimolar dissolved carbon to fuels with molecular flux generation

Abstract The direct utilization of dissolved inorganic carbon in seawater for CO 2 conversion promises chemical production on-demand and with zero carbon footprint. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) devices promise the sustainable conversion of dissolved carbon in seawater to carbon products using sunlight as the only energy input. However, the diffusion-dominant transport mechanism and the near-zero concentration of CO 2 (aq) (CO 2 dissolved in aqueous solution) in static seawater has made it extremely challenging to achieve high solar-to-fuel (STF) efficiency and high carbon-product selectivity. Here, where CO 2 (aq) as a reactant generated in situ by acidification of HCO 3 - flows continuously from BiVO 4 photoanodes to Si photocathodes, enabling a single-step conversion of dissolved carbon into products. Our PEC device significantly increases the CO selectivity from 3% to 21%, which approaches the 30% theoretical limit according to multi-physics modeling. Meanwhile, the Si/BiVO 4 PEC CO 2 R device achieved a STF efficiency of 0.71%. Such flow engineering achieves flow-dependent selectivity, rate, and stability in simulated seawater, thus promising practical solar fuel production at scale.

Probing rutile solid-phase crystallization of atomically mixed Mn-alloyed TiO 2 coatings through XANES analysis

Phase transformation via dopant introduction is an emerging strategy for tuning the electronic and catalytic properties of oxides. However, developing a general theory of ternary alloys and their microstructure evolution remains challenging due to the knowledge gaps in how point defects such as dopants lead to the formation of complex or metastable phases. We investigate the influence of Mn concentration and annealing temperature on the microstructure evolution of amorphous Mn-alloyed TiO 2 synthesized via Atomic Layer Deposition. In conclusion, our findings reveal a new crystallization pathway resulting in a direct amorphous TiO 2 to rutile transformation without an intermediate anatase phase and our multi-parameter thermal processing conditions show potential for AI-assisted data acquisition and analysis for studying complex oxide coatings.
