Regolith breccia consisting of H and LL chondrite mixture

Antarctic meteorite Yamato-8424 (Y-8424) is a regolith breccia that is homogenized mixture of H and LL chondrite components. The breccia consists mainly of a fine-grained material with mineral fragments of olivine, pyroxene, and Fe-Ni metal with traces of plagioclase.

Consortium reports on lunar meteorites Yamato 793169 and Asuka 881757, a new type of mare basalt

Consortium studies on lunar meteorites Yamato 793169 and Asuka 881757 (formerly Asuka-31) were performed to characterize these new samples from unknown locations in the lunar mare. Both meteorites are coarse-grained mare rocks having low Mg/Fe ratios (bulk mg'=30-35) and low TiO2 (1.5-2.5 percent in homogenized bulk samples). They are intermediate between VLT and low-Ti mare basalts. Although these meteorites are not identical to each other, their mineral and bulk compositions, isotopic systematics, and crystallization ages are remarkably similar and distinct from those of all other mare basalts. They appear to represent a new type of low-Ti mare basalt that crystallized at about 3.9Ga. These meteorites are inconsistent with the canonical correlation between the TiO2 contents and ages of mare basalts and suggest that our knowledge of lunar volcanism is far from complete.

The Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites - A new grouplet with high Delta(17)O and evidence for nebular oxidation

The petrogenesis of the Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites and their relationship to other chondrites are studied using new petrologic data, especially on mineralogical zoning patterns, and oxygen isotopic analyses of the whole chondrites and some of chondrules. Detailed zoning profiles of mafic silicates are measured in order to determine the environment(s) in which their oxidation states are established. It is concluded that the zoning did not form during crystallization from a melt droplet chondrule but post-dated chondrule formation. Parent-body thermal metamorphism and nebular gas-solid exchange reactions accompanied by condensation of new FeO-rich olivine, utilizing existing olivine surfaces as nucleation sites are considered as hypotheses explaining the zoning. The occurrence of zoned grains in a host that is mainly equilibrated suggests that the equilibration of the Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites occurred prior to final lithification.

Some unique meteorites found in Antarctica and their relation to asteroids

Two unique meteorites were identified by means of a mineralogical examination of the smaller-sized Yamato achondrites. Yamato-74130 is the most iron-rich ureilite with Na, Cr-rich augite instead of pigeonite. Yamato-74160 was extensively recrystallized, but the composition and proportion of olivine, orthopyroxene, augite, and plagioclase is consistent with LL7 chondrites. ALHA77005 is a unique achondrite with olivine, possibly three pyroxene assemblages, and maskelynite. These meteorites provide evidence that there may be other 'thermalized' asteroids than the howardite parent body. Detailed petrologic descriptions of the unique achondrites, recrystallized diogenite Yamato-74013, and the rapidly cooled eucrite Yamato-74450 with pyroxene phenocrysts are given. It is inferred from the bulk chemistry and the mineralogical reexamination of Yamato-75028 that it is composed of the H5-type clasts and chondrule-rich H(L)3-like matrix with the H5 fragments. A close relationship in the collisional evolution of some asteroids with these materials is inferred.
